Phone cameras killed Kodak and 145000 middle class jobs.

Amazon killed 1200 Borders stores.

Netflix destroyed Blockbuster killing 60000 jobs.

Good. This notion that everyone should have a full time job is dated, stupid and should be abandoned. We should be striving for a reality where you don't *need* to work just to get by. People could be doing useful shit for others instead of having to flip burgers just to afford rent and electricity.

Here's the thing:

How many jobs were created just for the new smart phone industry?

Way more than 145,000, dumbass. There's probably 145,000 retail employees peddling just smart phone accessories alone. Then there's the huge boom of mobile development that single-handedly revitalized the tech sector.

Likewise, do you know how many employees amazon has? Over 340,000. Unless Borders had over 280 employees per store, it was a huge net gain to the economy.

Likewise with netflix, the amount of jobs created just for infrastructure demands for the entire industry was/is astounding and completely eclipses Blockbuster at its height.
>>
>>59550762

Those jobs are going to immigrants because Americans aren't trained for the jobs. That's why American white men are killing themselves in record numbers.

You're supposed to adapt, anon. Kodak could have gone into digital imaging and continue making high-end cameras. Amazon is just too convenient, IIRC Sears could have been Amazon but they stuck to their guns and lost their dominance. Same with Blockbuster, they could have been Netflix but thought "who the fuck would want to watch movies on the interwebs".
So yeah, be smart, fucking diversify.

this. "muh jobs" is an idea imposed on you by a system that demands you be a cog for the benefit of the system and the wealthy. and even if you don't believe that, jobs will always decrease as technology advances, booming populations only increase the problem. so those jobs are never coming back, and the "service economy" meme isn't going to save you either. so you pretty much have to re-design society and the distribution of wealth to a post universal employment system where a job and becoming "wealthy" are very different and a choice, not a necessity for survival. this is not communism, which is a universal employment system that is just far to susceptible to human fallibility which is why it fails in most cases. it's more like futurist socialism.

Proof technology is cancer
>>
>>59552574
>he thinks absolute numbers don't matter
>he thinks per capita is a better metric
Lmao, no. If technology really is taking people's jobs, then one very efficient solution would be population control (one child policy, or something of that sort). This would reduce the supply of labor in tandem with the decreasing demand of labor due to technology.
Naturally, that isn't happening empirically though, and technology has a tendency to create too many jobs, the polar opposite of destroying them.

>>59552574
>doesn't differentiate between high paying jobs and low paying ones
This is especially ironic because if technology really is destroying jobs, it is most definitely destroying low skilled labor, not high skilled labor.
So really there is no need to differentiate between high paying and low paying, as if technology is really taking people's jobs, then the current jobs will pay more than jobs in the past.
>doesn't differentiate between full time and part time

You do know that population increases faster than that?

Shit will hit the fan when automation kills the most common job in the US: truck driving.
>>
>>59566975
>Have you met IBM Watson? They pretty much made him to replace doctors and discover interesting drug interactions.
Yes, it is possible that high skilled jobs may be automated at some point, but perhaps too optimistic. Naturally the lower skilled jobs are the first to go, which you even admit in your next statement regarding Truck drivers.
>You do know that population increases faster than that?
Birth rates have been declining, and in fact below replacement rate in countries like Japan.
In the US, the labor force has been growing faster than non-immigrant population. Naturally this is a consequence of immigration increasing the size of the labor force, but also women entering the workforce.
The point is, in any case. That you shouldn't look at per capita metrics. Why? Because the nominal value is precisely what the size of our economy can sustain, and is sustaining, regardless of what the population level is. Humans are like bacteria, and the size of our economy, population, labor force, etc are described by the nominal value.
Looking at per capita variables you will be swamped with social effects, that make automation completely irrelevant. For example if you look at the Labor Force Participation Rate (which is falling, but is at ~1970 levels), much of the rise in the modern era is a consequence of women entering the workforce. The decline today is due to Baby Boomers retiring.
Anyways, it's not correct that technology will "kill" jobs at all. But even so, it would suggest that population control is a viable option, or making women be housekeepers to reduce the labor force is a viable option.

I'm not defending Marx or advocating his theory, but in what way does his hipocrisy undermine his theory? At this point Marxism is a school of thought that's developed by many thinkers. But even if we talk about Marx only, why do you think a person who acts against his teachings must be wrong intellectualy? This doesn't make any sense.

You do know that there are alcoholics who admit that excessive drinking is horrible and yet they drink, right?
You do realize that there are alcoholics who say that being an alcoholic is horrible and yet are completely in denial about their own condition, right?

You attack Marx's personality as if that somehow underminds his writings. But it's not like you read Marx to learn facts, you read Marx to see a line of reasoning and evaluate it on your own: does it make sense, does it sound correct? It's just mind boggling that you think Marx's personality is in any way relevant so many years after his death.

UBI isn't communist. It's more efficient than other government programs which are not going to just disappear. It's super capitalist that people can chose when and where to spend their money, do it more efficiently than a bureaucrat could, shrink the bureaucratic costs of the programs to be spent on other things, businesses have more business.
There is no downside to UBI, arguing against it is stupid, even if you're rich because a rich person will get just as much money as a poor person, while also getting more business from poor people.

the main problem is that for many reasons, americans generally have been getting stupider each year for quite a while. and yet, they can vote in a system that goes out of it's way to over-emphasize the power of votes in places where this decline is the most severe. combine that with a culture that encourages or forgives the tactics of manipulation by the rich and powerful on both "sides", and you have a recipe for disaster.

>>
>>59575190
They invented it first and then sat on it because they didn't want to cannibalize their massive film business. Until the other camera makers got hold of it and cannibalized the film business for them. They started making shitty digital point-n-shoots, since Kodak cameras had always been simple consumer things. They were still a shadow of their former self because now they were one face in a crowded camera market that had only its brand name and history to trade on. Then smartphones came along and completely wiped out that market in a few years. The other camera makers all had higher end stuff to fall back on, or other electronic stuff. Kodak didn't, and down they went. Could have all been avoided if they'd been more willing to risk existing product lines.

Maybe for some people, but as a majority? I disagree.
I don't think you hear the phrase "just pull yourself up by your bootstraps!" very often in more socialized countries, such as in Scandinavia, Germany, Australia, etc. The word socialism still has a stigma here. We don't have a single payer healthcare system, tuition-free college, etc.

Dude you're looking at all the wrong statistics. For one you can't just meter the workforce, you have to examine the quality of the jobs. The production industry makes up about 12.7% of the workforce. 12.7% of the workforce actually makes physical products that are transferable to other countries which reads that we're slaves to the countries that actually manufacture our goods, and only major corporations own the means of production in the US anyways, and they've outsourced everything they can - for now. Projections for 2024 indicate that this will go down to 12% flat.

Which brings us to the second point, standard of living, cost of living, and actual revenue. CoL is relatively hard to actually calculate since there are so many variables between one individual and the next, for instance student debt or whether you owe on your car, or whether or not you have a lawn mower, and etc... But the summary data provided by the BLM creates a fairly stark picture: after taxes in the 25% bracket you end up with something around $56,483, whereas the average, necessary, expenditure sits at about 43,807 failing to account for a broken timing belt. But let's not pretend that we're robots, the average spending on entertainment according to the BLM is $2,842 bringing us into the range of $46,649. Now assuming you didn't accumulate any debt in college is a hard one to make, so we'll account for the fact that you're an aspiring young individual, $1,315 on average, and $47,946 respectively. You'll have a hard time holding your perfectly average job with no clothes, and you'll need them serviced (?) another $1,846 from your coffers, and $49,810 from your annual income. We'll forego the life insurance, nobody cares about you and you hate everyone at this point so we'll just pay into social security as is necessary: $6,016 and you're whole income is virtually blown $55,826 out of your $56,483. $657 remaining.
>>
>>59578157 - cont'd
The problem here is that we're under-producing and not generating currency but rather circulating it. Even in the instances where we are generating currency it's simply being circulated from one nation to another, the one exception being technology. When Intel engineers a new chip it's can be treated as a produced resource, when NVIDIA produces a new GPU the same rule is applied. When Google creates a new website again the rule is applied. But these are all virtual, not material and so they have only the value the consumer gives them, rather than the inherent value of the conductors and silicon inside them. The information and utilities industries are receding and as such they are hardly a viable option. Whereas shit jobs like retail and food are continuing to grow, as is tourism, none of which actually generate revenue, but rather circulate it. As such the market around these things will continue to stagnate and the people who are affected by it will continue to live paycheck to paycheck.

>>
>>59578328
And in the next 7 years the projections show a fairly significant decline in the growth of all sectors. To compound that issue because the means of production are almost exclusively owned by corporations the average individual will continue the downward spiral into the abyss of poverty as a product of the continued interest in cost-cutting for higher margins. Especially when considering the proliferation of automation. So while unemployment may or may not increase the wages will most assuredly not match the cost of living and you'll start to see slums and mancamps filled with people desperate to earn some actual income instead of subscribing to a life of what is essentially serfdom. Eventually this will fall into indentured servitude, debt will become necessary to survive and people will live a life indentured.

You don't really get what it is about.

This basic income thing is not really about RIGHT NOW but we speculate that it could be necessary in future. Blue collar jobs can be almost all replaced by robots in future. They will produce things. And actually supply won't be problem. The problem will be who will buy these things, if suddenly half of humanity doesn't have a job. So, introduce basic income and basically pay those people to consume.
