I wouldn't if any of the FSF-approved distros were even close to being usable on a day to day basis for anyone who doesn't have severe autism. I just use Debian, which is free software, but because it stores nonfree software on the same server this retarded toejam-eating freak declared a war against it.

>>59547202
Fuck off autismo. This is such a pathetic autistic argument I wish you could be sent to a labor camp for making it. Schools teach kids how to use Windows and nonfree software, is that like teaching them how to smoke crack? Futhermore if installing Skype on Debian was truly equivalent to smoking, no one would need a fucking page of instructions to do it, because it would be self-explanatory.
>>
Had problems with using Trisquel because my wifi needs a nonfree driver, so I'm using Debian. That said, I'd rather use a completly free distro, if free drivers would be available. I guess the problem is that too many people accept nonfree drivers, which again pushes producing nonfree drivers. It just needs more people who say "No" like in the 90s and the driver problem would be solved.
>>
>>59546760
>I wouldn't if any of the FSF-approved distros were even close to being usable on a day to day basis for anyone who doesn't have severe autism.
Uh, if you can use Debian, you can probably use Trisquel as well. Heck, I've had wi-fi cards that required a little setting up on Debian but none on Trisquel. gNewSense might work too, I haven't touched it in years.

>the FSF-approved distros
Their endorsement ust means that they can recommend these distros to anyone. No FSF person would tell you you're doing something wrong by using Debian, as long as you really don't touch the non-free parts.

You're all very retarded. Why is it so hsrd to understand that he is probably the only person living by all of the strict rules of FSF and that he invented the doctrine, believes in it 100%? He's there to educate you, and even he realizes that FOSS is sometimes not practical. You're doing less harm to yourself by using ubuntu over windows, then using debian over ubuntu, and lastly using gnewsense over debian. He does not fucking compromise on the website by saying that however, because it's activism. Hurr durr this is free software but use ubuntu because some of it is free, not these ones we endorse because they're examples of absolutely free software. You're all dumb.

I use Libre Office because I don't need the MS one, I use VLC over proprietery alternatives etc. But I am AWARE why FSF doesn't endorse "usable" software. They have a definition of "free" and they don't compromise it by endorsing non-free software on their website, why would they? If anything, it would be confusing and dumb.

Also, they fucking explain why they don't endorse all of the popular distros, obviously so you can decide for yourself, it's not like they don't mention Debian etc.

What we say is that you ought to give the system's principal developer a share of the credit. The principal developer is the GNU Project, and the system is basically GNU.

If you feel even more strongly about giving credit where it is due, you might feel that some secondary contributors also deserve credit in the system's name. If so, far be it from us to argue against it. If you feel that X11 deserves credit in the system's name, and you want to call the system GNU/X11/Linux, please do. If you feel that Perl simply cries out for mention, and you want to write GNU/Linux/Perl, go ahead.

Since a long name such as GNU/X11/Apache/Linux/TeX/Perl/Python/FreeCiv becomes absurd, at some point you will have to set a threshold and omit the names of the many other secondary contributions. There is no one obvious right place to set the threshold, so wherever you set it, we won't argue against it.

Different threshold levels would lead to different choices of name for the system. But one name that cannot result from concerns of fairness and giving credit, not for any possible threshold level, is “Linux”. It can't be fair to give all the credit to one secondary contribution (Linux) while omitting the principal contribution (GNU).

No one really cares about your "acknowledgement" unless you let it show.

Anyway, my input: I agree with the FSF stance of insisting on GNU/Linux, but I do recognize that it is such a clumsy name to use in a casual discussion. There should be 0 controversy if it was easy to say, but gahnoo slash linux really isn't - so the desire to just say Linux is understandable.

Most of the time I nonetheless call it GNU/Linux, esp since I use distros which call themselves GNU/Linux rather than "Linux".

Just consider: the GNU Project starts developing an operating system, and years later Linus Torvalds adds one important piece. The GNU Project says, “Please give our project equal mention,” but Linus says, “Don't give them a share of the credit; call the whole thing after my name alone!” Now envision the mindset of a person who can look at these events and accuse the GNU Project of egotism.
>>
>>59548273
Linux is the core of the System, so it's a "Linux OS". (With thousands of contributors NOT having a probem with calling it either that way for an umbrella term, or by it's distro's name)
They are credited in man pages and/or code/repo whatever. Exactly like GNU devs.
Yet they simply aren't so shameless to demand a prefix.

It would not be false to the facts, but it is not the best thing to do. Here are the reasons we call that system version “GNU/Linux” rather than just “GNU”:

It's not exactly GNU—it has a different kernel (that is, Linux). Distinguishing GNU/Linux from GNU is useful.
It would be ungentlemanly to ask people to stop giving any credit to Linus Torvalds. He did write an important component of the system. We want to get credit for launching and sustaining the system's development, but this doesn't mean we should treat Linus the same way those who call the system “Linux” treat us. We strongly disagree with his political views, but we deal with that disagreement honorably and openly, rather than by trying to cut him out of the credit for his contribution to the system.
Since many people know of the system as “Linux”, if we say “GNU” they may simply not recognize we're talking about the same system. If we say “GNU/Linux”, they can make a connection to what they have heard about.

It is right and proper to mention the principal contribution first. The GNU contribution to the system is not only bigger than Linux and prior to Linux, we actually started the whole activity.

However, if you prefer to call the system “Linux/GNU”, that is a lot better than what people usually do, which is to omit GNU entirely and make it seem that the whole system is Linux.
