IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

That's just the screen protector. It's immaculate and matte underneath.
How? Luck of the draw. Model numbers are 'nominal' on these listings insofar as it will be a compatible IPS but it can be one of a number variant panels.

Anyway. It turned out okay, I took my own advice and got sticky pads.

Only comments are that it sits quite deep in the bezel which triggers me a bit.

Other than that it seems like you can see the screen border more easily almost as if it's a fractionally smaller screen diameter. Could also be Ive never inspected my screen this close and so never noticed.

XPS 15 is fine. Good battery, can play some casual games, has fantastic screen. Yeah.

There are other similarly specced laptops (look into its competition if interested). It does what you want though.
>>
>>59539068
I didn't mean that the battery has to last a long time while gaming. It will be plugged into electricity during that time anyway. I mean that the battery has to last long while doing other tasks.

>>
>>59539226
>XPS
W550s has 2x the battery life
>>
>>59539413
Not a good argument in and of itself because

If device A has a 4 hour battery life and device B has twice that at 8 hours then that 100% improvement is very significant.

However if device A has 10 hours for example, and device B has 20 hours then while B's life is phenomenal a 10 hour usage is more than enough for a lot of people and is still very good.

My point is the value of longer battery life does not scale linearly with the battery life. It drops off after a point.

Plus it's not an obvious improvement since there's trade off involved to obtain that.

but thats exactly the case here, XPS gets around 5 while doing basic shit, and W550s around 10.

The only thing that doesn't work is the microsd card reader, the docking station and vga port didn't at first but a simple patch solves that as mentioned in the tutorial.

Furthermore runs cooler than 7 and got slightly better battery life than what i had on 7.

>compared to a real mac
No idea i don't have a Mac but it's been rock solid like Win7 since i installed Sierra 10.12.1, getting updates from the app store and all.

Needless to say I'm sure the experience is still worse than a native Mac because plenty of things are designed with the touchpad on mind and you can't emulate that with this shitty touchpad, i only use the trackpoint anyway.

I'm the source. You want a pic of the PCBs inside the batts, where the fuses are located, and a few suppliers of knockoff replacements in China as the only sources because the US and Japanese suppliers of them won't talk to you?
>>
>>59550086

so i think i finally hit the sweet spot with the BIOS splash image.

Lelnovo specifies that image should be less than 30kb /less than 640X480 and to be a GIF, a JPG or a BMP file.

now, i have naturally tried to use GIF because the format offers more flexibility to get the most sharp image within the 30kb limits, but thats no go, the bios destroys the image an just shows a garbled and corrupted graphics.

as for BMP, i have difficulties to made it to the 30kb limit so i discarded it for now.

that leave us with JPG, hitting the 30kb limit is no brainer playing with the quality slider, but i have noticed the BIOS reject images saved as "progressive" and/or "optimized".

also, the Save for Web dialog from the latest photoshop (which already set it as legacy) seems to save the pictures in a format the bios doesnt display correctly, had to save it t jpg using gimp.

the result is acceptable.

Is there any chance of my friend's L540 accepting a WiFi a/b/g card from my old T60?

Also, what's the ThinkPad situation like these days? Are the batteries whitelisted? What about chargers? WiFi cards? Memory?
>>
>>59550529
I doubt it would fit, since wireless cards have been half-height for a long time now and the T60's is full height. Why would you even want to use it? It's an overheating piece of shit.
>>
>>59540716
That honestly seems a little high, but I'm not sure how being in NZ affects prices. I'd replace the hard drive with an ssd, and maybe buy a new OEM battery depending on how the old one holds up

Anyone has experiences with the T440, especially the T440p?

Are they as durable and robust as the T420's?
>>

With the 40 series ThinkPads hit rock bottom. These are the absolute worst, especially in terms of build quality. 50 series was better, 60 series was already very good and the new 70 series is plain awesome. The newest models are finally on par with IBM. Took Lenovo 10 years but they're finally producing laptops worthy of the name ThinkPad

There are terrible audible cracking noises at a mere touch. The whole chassis bends. You can feel it when you rest your hands on the palmrest. There's also quite a lot of bend in the keyboard. The hinges are a disaster. Last summer I worked for small repair shop for a few months. From all the Laptops I had to repair during that time I'd say 3/4 of the ones that had a hinge related problem were 40 series ThinkPads.

This is pretty arbitrary, just way the price outright.
Lenovo's Australian website offers such "deals" every day where they list a coupon you can "use" which applies automatically and just brings the price down to the point where it's only mildly expensive, despite the supposed thousand dollars in savings.

Sounds like some pretty solid specs though.

theres literally zero risks installing libreboot by yourself if you follow basic common sense, like...

Has anyone ever tried swapping a 13.3" screen onto an X220? I have a spare and kind of want to give it a go, except if it doesn't work out I'd need a whole new lid so it'd be good if I had someone else's work to go off of. It looks like it could fit if I grinded off all of the mount points for the screen as well as the edges of the casing and then glued it in.
I also have a heap of other screens which might fit better but all of them seem to use very slightly different 40-pin LVDS or 30-pin LVDS and I can't find any appropriate adapters online.

>>59566908
It's about $10 for a replacement and the swap should be simple enough though I've never tried it. At least once I'm done it should be running nice and cool.

>what's dat little thinkpad?
it's not even that little, it's just that the w700ds is so goddamn big
>>
>>59546523
Not sure if there was blank bezels for T420's, older thinkpads there were because they'd be in extended docks.

I think any 2.5" SSD will work for your T420, iirc 7mm drives were necessary on T430 and later.

As far as RAM, I think any PC3-12800s will be fine, I don't think it benefits from faster RAM.
Haven't had any issues yet, 16GB is fine.

How does someone disable turbo boost?
My X220 is currently showing i5-2520M @ 4x 3.2GHz and can run very hot. In the CPU section in BIOS there are two settings that are both enabled. Which one will make my laptop run cooler at the cost of diminished performance. I'll also switch the Power of While on AC to Balanced. It's unclear what all of these actually do though. I mean specifics

No mate it's supposed to do that. The red dot is a color coded cover. Business machines like Thinkpads come packed with extra features and security measures like thumbprint readers. If it's not yet set to an admin, try pricking your finger and letting a drop of blood on that "black square". A prompt will come up to enable DNAID. Click "okay" and "accept" and welcome to power computing hombre.
