If you can afford to 3 way SLI 970's, then you can afford to buy one 1080 TI.

There is absolutely zero reason to SLI unless you need to performance, ie, you are doing SLI over the top models, like you are doing 1080 or 1080ti SLI.
For all other cases just grab a better card, its not worth the issues.
