spins don't 'just werk' though and this has been the case for over a decade, it's fine if you can tolerate gnome 3 but if not you're SOL

don't get me wrong, it's one of the more usable distros, but the focus is clearly only on the official gnome release

Of course it is and it has always been. The official releases are only Workstation, Server and Cloud. The Spins are unofficial releases maintained by the community. Some spins are maintained by a single person.
