Active power means each speaker has its own discreet power supply inside the cabinet and requires a separate power plug and audio cable, passive power means the speakers require an amplifier to work, which sends both power and audio to the speaker.
Active speakers have the advantage of having an integrated amp and power delivery that's tailored to its specific requirements, but they're more expensive per speaker.
Most people will suggest the JBL LSR305's, because they're cheap while packing in tech that puts them on par with more expensive units, you'd have to spend twice their cost to get any benefit.

Not needing an amplifier you noob.
I got Focal Alpha 80, those are quite nice.

never heard them, only the bigger beryllium solos
I figure focal is pretty constantly good outside their overpriced hifi bullshit, though
Whatever Genelecs are in your price range..

Budget, space? Can you fit a sub or two under your desk?

>that's tailored
You're probably thinking of active crossovers.
>packing in tech that puts them on par with more expensive units
That would be the faceplate, called a baffle. What makes it worthwhile is the geometry of the baffle.

yeah the waveguide is pretty damn good, but even directly on axis the LSRs measure and sound really good for the price and the bass extension is pretty much as good as it gets with that cabinet sizes
I might grab three 308 and a pair of 305 to build a really cheap surround set in my living room even though I don't really need it
I'm really intrigued after hearing them
