is macOS really unix?

Its a meaningless certification that apple got so they could sell more computers. It doesn't make it better in any way.

I use Windows 7, Windows 10, Windows 8.1, Linux, and OS X. I have a 2015 Retina MBP, numerous Windows computers, and quite a few Linux computers.

Here is the thing, Macs aren't bad at all. Most of the software I use on Windows is available on Mac. The terminal is nice. Ports are nice.

Is it overpriced? Yes it is. Nice machine, but the price is crazy.

I don't really have a favorite...maybe Windows 7 and Debian. It all comes down to personal preference.

I will say the Mac is a pain in the ass to keep clean. That shiny metal shows every smudge.

TrueOS is pretty nice but there's no real reason to ever use it that I can think of.

Yes, it's derived from Unix. Is it better than Linux? Not for you, probably not for anyone anymore. It's just a different way of accomplishing the same old tasks.

There's a difference between something being the actual UNIX and something that gained UNIX certification. The latter being so UNIX like that you could do pretty much everything you could do on the actual UNIX. Darwin is a branch of UNIX with the UNIX certification. It even uses a kernel called XNU (which stands for X is Not Unix)

It uses a microkernel, but then so did OSF/1 and so does Hurd. What is or isn't UNIX, or UNIX-like, and how separate they are is a point of contention.
We would all agree that Research UNIX and Unix System V are UNIX, despite them sharing very little code and being significantly different.
