Getting stuff off of storage media onto the CPU is still full of bottlenecks all along the way.

Probably way back when data was stored on tape, floppies and other such media where the wait for data to copy was longer than it took to process.

If RAM access took a second, disk access took two weeks.
Of course, that was a while ago. Disks (SSD) have improved more than RAM but RAM is still lots faster.
If we could access SSDs at the same speed we can access RAM...
