Oh god i hate OPensuse.
Tumbleweed is a too bleeding-edge edition (fuckers didn't even tried to compile Enlightenment properly, in my case it kept crushing several times an hour)
Debian's okay (systemd infested though)
>>
Great for minimalist servers.
Okay for desktops but I prefer Ubuntu or Mint.
Meh for development because of outdated packages that will force you to either use backports, use upstream repos, or manually install packages which can result in a package management clusterfuck when you have to work with different versions of dependencies.

The best distro. Sadly the only other two passable distros are being developed by corporations so Debian is the only good one at all. Anyone using anything other than Debian is either being forced by their work, new to GNU/Linux, or a pitiful poor sad idiot.

I'm more of a Fedora guy, the few times I used debian, I only had issues…
At my school, it's outdated as hell and features are lacking on some software…
When I installed it on my desktop, I had missing firmware…

On Fedora, everything is fine and it's fucking comfy
>>
>>59499514
there's non-free installation media. Alternatively download the firmware(s) before-hand and place on USB/whatever, the newer installers ask for them
>>
>>59497767
>switch to debian
>certain things don't work
>kernel old af

moral of the story: stable = fucking old shit, testing = slightly old shit, unstable = comfy

>>
Fedora is pretty much the only good distro

If you just want generic gnome 3 and a shitload of packages I would just use fedora nowadays

Hell if you want a server I would still say fedora server or centos since pretty much everyone uses RH aids on their servers.
It will be a useful skill to know.

So close, I think I had stopped ordering by them, but yeah, I feel like the pre HH discs were also pretty fruity.

I always took the max of each, even the PPC ones that I'm sure got used zero times ever.

10/10 comfy os.
Stable just werks.
There's linux, cinnamon, xfce, xorg, zsh, vim and every other thing you may need to customize.
Git repositories always give compilation instructions to dumb ubuntu users, so compiling is easy as fuck.
Not as mainstream as ubuntu but not as edgy as arch linux.
Can use all of ubuntu documentation, and the debian wiki.
Did i mention comfy?
Also backports. I'm running linux 4.9 on debian stable.
I still have to understand how systemd is damaging the os, but it's a nice funny reddit meme i guess.

The community is full of SJWs but whatever.

package museum
>>
>>59499110
he's added debian to his repertoire. shouldn't you be creating a bsd troll thread soon?
>>
>>59498968
Arch packages are not as lightweight naturally, as each package is compiled to support everything. It does make the package management much more simple, though. One reason I prefer pacman over apt
apt is still pretty good, probably #2 behind pacman, portage is overrated and a bloated mess. yum and rpm are a fucking disaster, let's not talk about that
>>
>>59499640
How stable would you say unstable is?
>>
you dont wanna know, wanna know why?
>>
>>59504711
stable just means "doesn't change". it is not intended to mean "doesn't crash". therefore unstable changes a lot because of churning bugs.
>>
>>59505058
So then would testing be the sweet spot for a desktop user?
>>
>>59505113
no. testing is the worst daily driver.

testing is where the puzzle is being pieced together. for various reasons part of the puzzle is missing for unknown time. things may stay broken for a while.

unstable is more rapid with the goal of working. testing is where the vision of stable-next slowly takes form
>>
>>59505191
I am currently using testing on both of my daily drivers... I can see what you mean. It deferentially is more likable than stable for me though. I will give it a shot on my old thinkpad and see if it was a wise choice. I was just very weary to try it because it is called "unstable." They should try calling it fresh instead.
