if I install Ubuntu alongside Windows 7, will it ask me to partition my hard drive?
if so, how much space should I give it?

I'm scared of partitioning because I've never done it and don't know if I can undo it or change the space assigned for each partition or what.
I've asked this in another thread already but got no good answers.

Defrag your windows partition. Resize it but keep in mind how much of it is being used. Create your new partitions on the space you opened up. Install Ubuntu GNOME on it. Enjoy.

Use Ubuntu unity. Gnome is good, but if you want to use Ubuntu then just stick with unity since it's literally made for it.
If you ever get scared of it's UI install ZorinOS instead. It's based on Ubuntu but uses it's own DE (based on cinnamon) which has windows/mac/gnome/unity layout switch. I honestly think ZorinOS is too dumbed down but it's not that bad for introducing people into Linux. It also requires stronger hardware which is another reason I dislike it, although Zorin Lite is apparently coming soon.

Ubuntu is super comfy, it's just that using it won't make anon feel as special as he thinks he is. Though some stuff to point out is that:

1)Compiz can, has and does completely shit it self completely fucking up your install and forcing you to install another DE.

2)Compiz is also pretty great and compizconfig along with multiple plugins lets you extend Unity quite a bit. My favorite is setting Super + Mouse Scroll to change workspaces.

3)No proper notification center and non-actionable notifications for no reason. Install indicator-notifications and NotifyOSD Config to fix that. Just find and replace the unfortunately hardcoded indicator icons to make it "fit" your icon pack.

4)Ships with noticeable bloat you won't use, some don't even make sense i.e Thunderbird instead of Evolution when Evolution integrates with the desktop

5)Quite heavy and doesn't justify it in the way Gnome does.

6)Especially ugly out of the box but pretty easy to rice theme-wise, just not layout-wise outside of using stuff like Albert + Plank. Custom "Launcher_bfb" can be thrown into a theme's "unity" folder to change the Unity button on the launcher.

7)Install Nemo with Ubuntu patches.

Have fun making Linux easy! :)

Hey, how do you install a font using pacaur without it taking over the whole system? I've only recently got Arch and any new font I like the look of that I install is instantly used in polybar, any system text and even everywhere in firefox/waterfox.

No. You are just wasting your time. Technologists do not waste time trying to feel cozy on an obscure operating system unless they have a practical use for it. Their focus is the product they are developing and Linux is only a tool for which to accomplish such development. Businesses are run on Windows and back-end shit is done with Linux. It is not meant to be a cozy environment for fuck sakes. If you basement dwellers ever want to get out into the real world and make some actual fucking money, you will use Linux for its practical uses ONLY. And you will stay the fuck away from it for everything else. The VP of the dept does not care that you're comfy with Ubuntu, he only wants his damn project completed so we can all get our damn bonuses.

Anyone here dual-boot Win10 and Ubuntu 14.10? What kinds of problems can I run into if I try? What are the risks?

I've only ever installed 14.10 on a clean drive, so I have no idea how 14.10 will interact with Win10, if they do.

Also, what do you guys think about persistent Ubuntu? I want something that's not set in stone, but I still want to enjoy the speed and battery-saving capabilites of Ubuntu. Anyone here wanna throw in their $0.02?

Same reason why I didn't tell you Xubuntu is ultra-comfy. Ubuntu is the bare bricks, while Xubuntu is a solid foundation of a ladder straight to freedom and privacy haven.

I'm currently booting 7 and Ubuntu. Problems and tips:
>Rufus fucks up dual booting, UNetBootin or MultiBoot should be used instead
>windows 10 sometimes corrupts Linux partitions. This is a part of Microsoft's anti-competition strategy.
>when you reboot from Linux to windows (at least w7), windows doesn't load any USB drivers and cannot use USB slots. This is fixed by simply rebooting into windows again.
>using 2 separate drives (one for each OS) will have better performance.

>Unity 7 is comfy as fuck

I'm booting 10 and KDE Neon (effectively Ubuntu 16.10). Only problems are system clock mismatchs which I solved with a line of code in terminal. Other problem is sometimes it does strange things with sound when I reboot with headphones on and turn on again with headphones off, but nothing serious at all. The most annoying are win10 only problems. Also, quickstart sometimes makes it so you can't access the win partition from linux unless you shift+shutdown windows. That's all.
