Why is 5GHz so impossible?
I got my 3700K to 4.8GHz easy, but another measly 200MHz is requiring a huge power increase just to boot into Windows, even then it just crashes.
It's not even the temps cause they're 40c on idle.
Is it just the binning that sucks or is there more to overclocking then just multipliers and voltage?

There are power and heat related sweet spots.
It varies per chip and per CPU line.
Some let you get away with decent temps and sensible voltage while others flounder.
My 3820 got 4.9 before it hit a voltage wall.
4.8 Ain't bad take it and go.

/thred
this didn't deserve a thred desu
motherboard/psu might not be able to deliver enough power if heat isn't stopping you
My poor little i3 starts to hit a wall around 4.8, be happy

My 7700K does 5GHz on air. Time to upgrade, Poojeet.

Already high clock speed urine stain

>7700k
>5Ghz
>Obviously delidded because of Intel thermal toothpaste

What's the Y axis?

Thermal conductivity I guess

Just wait for Ryzen 5.

should i just use toothpaste as my thermal paste now?

If a 2% difference matters in any significant way to warrant it. BTW a 5% is a standard margin of error.
