I use a kenneth cole messenger bag I got from amazon for about $100 for uni. It's been four years and aside from staining my pants for a month it's been going strong so far.

Whatever they used to color the leather rubbed off on my pants for a few weeks, otherwise it's been great. I walked for an hour every day the last 4 years carrying a 4lb laptop + charge, some folders and a small textbook. The strap still looks strong. People also seem to like the style.
