There's good stuff on there anon, just not on the front page. Especially for CS where you can literally find a 50 video long playlist for just about anything you can think of.

The same thing that killed Justin TV

Ads
>>
>>59487355
There was a thread like this one several years ago on /v/ around the time when Nintendo was getting on people's asses about LP'ing their games, we decided it was a combination of normies and large companies discovering the internet in 2011 during Occupy Wall Street
>>
>>59487710
>all those times streaming anime on JustinTV with internet friends

Amazon buying Twitch and not seeing enough Minecraft videos on Justin to justify keeping it was what actually killed it. What's interesting is that after they killed Justin TV, a lot of what people used to use Justin TV for (art streams and podcasts) eventually got added to Twitch despite the latter supposedly only being about gaming.
>>
>>59487619

This. Youtube is fine and has tons of amazing content.

Walk into any supermarket. What do you see? Garbage!
90% of the products are processed shit filled with starch and palm oil. Yet the remaining 10% are better quality food than anything most kings and emperors in history of mankind ever had access to.

Most people choose the garbage. But it doesn't mean that you have to! Just dig around, and you're sure to find something good.
>>
>>59487773
Isn't Twitch expanding into more than just gaming now?
>>
>>59487799
I guess it is now, but that wasn't the plan right after Justin TV was shut down, at least as far as I know. The Bob Ross streams might have been Twitch jumping the shark though.
>>
>>59487773
I was the same, I enjoyed watching things other than gaming and I enjoyed the fact that streamers didn't need to give a shit about copyrighted music and products.
There may have been other factors that contributed to it's downfall, but I might be projecting ads and donations as the main cause because it's the one thing I despise most of all when I see someone's stream.
>>
>>59487858
I wouldn't mind donations so much if they were used by actual content creators like artists or musicians, and not by vidya streamers pretending like they're doing labor when playing games for donations when in reality it's stupid people giving them money for nothing (with the exception of charity streams, of course). Hopefully camwhores will keep shitting up Twitch so that the streaming industry will collapse, with the only people left being the ones doing this for fun instead of for a profitable version of "make money from Google"

I used to dislike Patreon channels but honestly now I kind of support them.

It's more of a back-to-basic approach where you pay for what you want to watch (even if you don't pay) and it kind of makes sure the makers don't shill out (at least not as much) to appease to the latest turns and twists of the youtube recommendation algorithm because their backers request a specific kind of content, not one that's adapted to make it appear on the front page so 13 year olds click on them

In this way I and my family can concentrate on studying Maths, Science and do useful actitivies.

Patreon busking style models are definitely the way to go, especially because it can circumvent the irrationality of copyright.

I routinely pirate the shit of nip porn simulators, but when the author shows up in a thread where I'm posting the torrent links, and politely asks to spare some change on his enty in broken engrish, it sure guilt trips me to throw some bucks there.

That said, busking model still depends on common human decency of increasingly sparse middle class. Not sure about the survivability of that in the long term.

Doesn't even have to be about the money, just thinking something is worthy of word-of-mouth advertising. Likes and subscriptions promote your videos over "Uncle Bob's backyard BBQ."

I have 1k view uploads that are higher quality versions of multi-million view ones. Without an influx of viewers and likes they'll never supplant the poor quality ones, though, because they come in on page 3 of a search. My account isn't monetized so it doesn't mean anything to me if they watch *mine*, I just want quality to rise to the top.
I have one video that has just recently managed to pass whatever bar Google sets. It just took it almost two years. Pic related as to the difference it makes.
>>
>>59495216
Holy shit how does it feel like knowing that half a million people have seen something you created?

Back in the golden days of 2008 or so I uploaded several scenes from the Simpsons I meticulously ripped from my DVDs all on an account I have no access to anymore.

Most of them have been deleted due to copyright claims but 2 survived somehow, one at 10k views and one at ~200,000 views. Feels kind of cool even though I didn't create it myself. But 200,000 people watched something I exported in Windows Movie Maker.

I will suggest that you make Gentoo a bit more user friendly for me. Perhaps add a bunch of games I can play. We definitely need more of a controlled system so the hackers can't harm us. I also don't want to have to install updates manually, so could you make it so everything gets automatically updated? I do want to know about the updates though, don't just do it under the hood, so please give me an update screen so I know I am updating and can feel awesome about getting new features.

This. I create content on youtube, but never understood the whole "like and subscribe" thing. If the people like it enough, they will do it without you needing to beg for it. If they don't, does it really matter? Isn't what mattered that someone saw the content? It feels like more of the commercialism, "I will only do this because you want me to, not because I have enthusiasm in it". What happened to just wanting to make content for the fun of it? Well, mine's not half a million but I did recently hit over 100k views on a video.

>how does it feel
I don't care very much about the views. I'm doing this because I want sustainable income from doing something I really enjoy doing. At the beginning I thought I'd be stoked to hit 1k, 10k, 100k, etc views on a video... Turns out those numbers don't mean a whole lot. I'm happy that I get to help people though. So far that's been the nicest thing, other than finally making more than 10 cents a day in revenue.

Maybe I'll feel different when I'm actually able to financially support myself doing this. Unfortunately, I'm also running a Kickstarter, so I barely have time to be shooting/editing/uploading videos.

Newfags on discussion boards pose an even more immediate problem: they can degrade the quality of the discussion with inane comments straight away. Here is a good one about them:
>Somewhere in the vastness of the Internet, it is happening even now. It was once a well-kept garden of intelligent discussion, where knowledgeable and interested folk came, attracted by the high quality of speech they saw ongoing. But into this garden comes a fool, and the level of discussion drops a little—or more than a little, if the fool is very prolific in their posting. (It is worse if the fool is just articulate enough that the former inhabitants of the garden feel obliged to respond, and correct misapprehensions—for then the fool dominates conversations.)
>So the garden is tainted now, and it is less fun to play in; the old inhabitants, already invested there, will stay, but they are that much less likely to attract new blood. Or if there are new members, their quality also has gone down.
>Then another fool joins, and the two fools begin talking to each other, and at that point some of the old members, those with the highest standards and the best opportunities elsewhere, leave...
>I am old enough to remember the USENET that is forgotten, though I was very young. Unlike the first Internet that died so long ago in the Eternal September, in these days there is always some way to delete unwanted content. We can thank spam for that—so egregious that no one defends it, so prolific that no one can just ignore it, there must be a banhammer somewhere.
>But when the fools begin their invasion, some communities think themselves too good to use their banhammer for—gasp!—censorship.

It doesn't take too many passive viewers to keep your video towards the bottom of search and off suggested videos. Youtube has to make that determination with very little information, since before a video is suggested it's going to have very few views. People don't just magically appear at your video. I'm pushing 9k subs yet most of my videos only have ~200 views. You have to cross a threshold, and then things start rolling.

From the very beginning I remember them trying to build a "community" of "content creators" but the theme songs and people falling down are still there

The kernel itself will be safe until Torvalds quits or dies. Parts of userland are already lost to sociopaths (see GNOME, RedHat).

the eternal september meme is really dumb

in reality the users of the discussion forum are so bored of discussing x topic in such depth that they devolve into self aware irony, circlejerking, shitposting etc

internet forums designed around hobbies are really autistic when you think about it, no conversation is meant to last forever yet look at places like /vg/, when are those conversations meant to end?

imagine if you took a group of 10 people and put them in a room and told them they had to talk about x subject forever and if they stopped talking for more than 10 seconds at a time they would be killed, obviously after enough time they're going to start talking utter shite

"good discussion" is a fleeting thing and trying to create an environment that fosters it indefinitely tends to do more harm than good (look at a website like something awful or any internet forum that introduced (((better moderation))) to keep discussion quality high)

this isn't to say that newcomers can't degrade the quality of a discussion but the idea that all newcomers are exclusively dumb shitposters, or that the original quality posters aren't also capable of the same thing, is just dumb, eternal september meme is routed in this idea that if x had not happened then the quality of discussion would still be as high, in reality high quality discussion is just rare
