Get something to work on, anything that you enjoy at the moment, grow mad at it for being a disgusting mess then go back to doing nothing. I picked a game engine and the lack of features in its scripting is driving me mad.
It is not in elisp but this advice can be applied to emacs.

Install SLIME and SBCL and read / do Land Of Lisp.
Then you'll be a pro and wonder why you didn't do this sooner. Also knowing LISP will help you out.
