IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

I need a new keyboard for my T420. They are a whole lot cheaper in non US layout.

My question is, can I buy a foreign language keyboard and snap on US keys? As long as my comp is set to US it shouldn't make a difference right?
>>
Ey, I'm unbanned.

Where can I find the non-s LVDS to eDP converters for the T420 1080p IPS mod? Are the gooks done producing them? Are there still 3rd party sellers?
>>
>>59487075
No more fahm. Some gook forum is selling them but it will be hard to obtain. There was a guy selling them on the Lenovo forums but after the second batch he didn't want to do it anymore.

the screen of my new Thinkpad 11e, bought directly from Lenovo's website, is flickering
should I return it? what do

2nded, especially if it's a frankenpad.
>>
>>59487293
You should return the entire laptop and learn that gook-no-vo's new shit (past **20 series) is worse than a rag smeared in piss left to rot for a couple of days.

Then get yourself a t520 or x220 with an ips display.

I'm looking to buy a 90w charger and a 9 cell for my x220.

Nah it's really impossible to tell. 99% of the time the listing pic isn't even real anyway, so no point looking for signs of fakes.

you can put an IPS display on a T420
>>

If you want more options there's always the W series which are even thicker T5*0s. Of course once you get to newer models all of them can get good screens if you don't mind the build quality or anything else.

Fug, I got mixed up and it isn't IPS, it just has colour reproduction and viewing angles that leave it just about as good as a fairly average IPS screen anyway. And it very well is drop-in in many cases or else you're just swapping an OEM part anyway - read up on this shit yourself before you go abusing people for spoonfeeding you.
>>
>>59487814
its worse than all the other better than average thinkpad screens (x220 ips, t60 ips, t520 tn, t440 ips). I'm just going to go and buy the T520, I wont lug this laptop around much anyway so its alright.

Just don't bullshit me like that, you hyped that my dream laptop is still possible (t420 with 8gb ram, ivy bridge i7, 256 ssd + 1tb hdd in ultrabay, and most importantly, A FUCKING 1080p IPS DISPLAY.

Not thinkpad related but does anybody owns an xps13 from 2016 running Linux?

The gentoo wiki says that the gentoo install was a pain in the ass in the first model. It is also the case on newer models?

The Arch wiki mentions that the content adaptive brightness cannot be disable but "there is a fix" on windows for the highest resolution model.
What is this fix? Do I run the patch on windows then can proceed on running Linux without this unwanted feature or the fix only works on windows?

I'm replacing my old x201 and the xps13 looks like a nice machine and the ideal choice for a little laptop since modern thinkpads do not worth the price anymore.
>>
>>59488964
According to the Lenovo site the 47 is a 4-cell for the X200 and X201, 47+ is the 6-cell and 47++ is the 9-cell.

So check if the battery has a circle with "47", "47+" or "47++" according to which one you want to get.

any patrician standard models for FHD? 1366x768 is too small for what im doing (splitting screen vertically to read/take notes)
>>
>>59489736
For FHD you need to choose
>a 15" model
>a **30 or earlier 14" model that you're willing to do some obscure mod to
>X1 Carbon
>Most of anything **40 series and above (maybe check something like the T440p for starters)
Otherwise you'll have to settle for 900p. Though for what it sounds like you're doing you could probably get by with it, I've managed that sort of stuff on 768p just fine.

The X301 is more suited to being called bestpad, because the T60/p and T61/p have flaws that decrease their longevity unless you get them in unicorn configurations (NOS dGPU) which kind of removes the "easy to repair" and "easy to purchase" criteria and renders it the kind of device you have to put in a display case because they're ultimately irreplaceable. I'm saying this as someone who has a T60p 1600x1200 that they love sitting in a corner because the screen's got too many flaws and I don't know how to tighten the loose hinges.

For somebody who's doing anything that stresses the computer, the actual bestpad currently is an X230 or T530 but they have none of the unique combination of features that we hold dear in the X201s/X301/T61/T43p so fair enough.

Why is the T460p so cheap compared to the actual T460 - I'm having a few hundred bucks of difference for models with the same / very similar hardware.

I want to get a T460p, it's new for 800 bucks. It's this one:

https://www.notebooksbilliger.de/lenovo+thinkpad+t460p+20fw000d/eqsqid/3b99ab3f-bbae-4cdc-a5c1-d88da6d7817f

is there anything bad on buying a p version?
>>
>mfw i let you guys meme me into buying a X220 with two batteries and and a dock for 199 jewros
ubuntu or manjaro?
>>
>>59492442
Some estimates I posted in an earlier thread for a t440p with similar specs were:

>Base spec T440p - ~$220
>FHD screen - $70
>i7-4700MQ - $130
>T450 trackpad - $25 (not that that one comes with this)

Add on a bit more for memory to get up to 8GB and you can expect to pay about $500 USD for it, maybe more depending on condition. If that difference seems about right for the EU cuck tax then it's reasonable, though you might find it's better value to buy one with lower specs and upgrade it accordingly.

>>59492943
>is there anything bad on buying a p version?
P models tend to be thicker the processors they come with trade battery life for performance a little. Of course it makes sense for them to cost more, but it might just be a case of the majority of base models being sold just being overpriced and thus over-representing the market since they're the ones that don't sell.

>>59492946
>manjaro
I'd personally take Antergos over it since it's easymode Arch like Manjaro, but without the unnecessary fuckery with graphics drivers and other shit, and without using different repos. I'm also no fan of Ubuntu just because of apt but plenty of others get by with it without it breaking over minor shit so don't let that deter you.. Otherwise it's just a case of what you want out of your distro.
>>
>>59492547

i don't complain, it's actually a good deal i think.
>>
>>59493246
In my case it was the other way around and I've started using it because I like Arch, but got sick of going through the install process every time I stupidly decide to swap hard drives between computers or anything of the sort. Though the base install is still sometimes worth it, I managed to get a thin client set up adequately with LXDE + MPV just on 2GB of internal flash memory.

>>59493255
For absolute cheapest, just try searching for "thinkpad" on ebay and your local craiglist or equivalent. Searching for "IBM" and "Lenovo" might be worth it as well on local sites, since most people have no idea what they're selling and make ambiguous listings, sometimes with very low prices if you're lucky. Though a lot of it is just
>5 year old thinkpad edge

Hi, I feel this might be impossible but:

- Minimum 14" screen, 1600x900
- i5/i7
- 8GB RAM minimum, with space to upgrade to 16GB max
- Support for SSD, doesn't need to come with an HDD
- Dedicated GPU, doesn't matter AMD/nVidia
- Doesn't need Windows

and...

- As lightweight/slim as possible

Been looking at a lot of models but I can't pinpoint any that match all those specs. I guess one that I might be willing to exclude would be the dedi-GPU, but if I buy a unit it'll be a replacement for my current unit, so having a good GPU would be nice.

Otherwise, any other manufacturer's models that might fit? HP/Dell?

Yeah W series look good with built-in discrete GPUs, but heavy as fuck. I like the W520/530, the ones with Quadros look good... but very heavy.

The T430 looks good, but not the best GPU...

I'm pretty sure I read in here once that theres a way to set your laptop to cycle the battery (Only charrge to a certain amount and then discharge to a certain amount)

How do i do this
>>
I've currently got a Latitude e6420, but am thinking about upgrading to a new-ish thinkpad. Main gripe about the e6420 is the battery life (~5-6 hrs with manageable brightness and power saving settings), and a lesser gripe of not having usb 3.0 ports (t420 doesn't have the 3.0 ports, but the t440 does). I see pretty good deals on the t420 on craigslist in my area, but would the t440 be a good buy for the extra few hours of battery life (with the 72WHr secondary battery)? The added cost isn't really that much of a factor, but is there anything else I should consider when weighing my options between the t440 and t420?

Sup Cunts.

Just bought a W530 on E-bay. Think I overpaid for it but can't do anything about that now, Came with Windows 7 and trouble is, It's bloating up 50gb of my already tiny (and only) 140gb SSD. Isn't there a lightweight version of Win7 you could strip the shit out of and really shrink the size of?

Can't really part with Windows because of Artfag programs. Just want more space s'all.

Any advice?

what OS? in windows you can easily set this up in lelnovo power manager. pic related. you should avoid 100% discharge depth aka until the battery dies or the laptop shuts down. I personally got the best battery health results with 40-60, which means that while plugged in the battery discharges slowly (takes weeks) until 40% then charges back up to max 60%, and so on. you can also try with 60-80 so you have a good portability if you disconnect the charger. also the 'Automatically optimize for battery lifespan' usually means something like 0-90. it's good because you don't hit 100 that often but it's still not as good as above.

but like I said in a previous thread, this advice is for when you rarely unplug your laptop. if you're on the move all day everyday then charge it to whatever you want\need.

>>59496396

To use advanced battery features in Win10, you need to use Lenovo settings. It's a "universal app" you can install from the windows store. You can also download from my link and side-load with a powershell command. You need to install system interface foundation first.

The installer for the Lenovo System Interface Foundation must be downloaded from the Lenovo Support Web site (https://filedownload.lenovo.com/enm/sift/core/SystemInterfaceFoundation.exe).

From lenovo forums: https://support.lenovo.com/ca/fr/solutions/ht078208

Optimizing for lifespan (years) The main enemies of battery longevity are age, the number of charge cycles, amount of time at full charge, and high temperature. For maximum lifespan if you rarely use the battery, set Custom charge thresholds to start charging at 40% capacity and stop at 50%, and keep the ThinkPad cool. The thresholds can be adjusted in the Battery Maintenance settings of the Lenovo Power Manager. If you do use your battery somewhat frequently, set the start threshold at say 85% and stop at 90%. This will still give a good lifespan benefit over keeping it charged to 100%. The simplest way to optimize for battery lifespan is to select Automatic in the Power Manager Battery Maintenance settings, and let it manage your battery charge thresholds for you.

220t is a tablet version. If you don't have use for it as a tablet, why bother?

No I have not considered a QXGA because they are all TN, and I'd rather have a bit less screen res for better colors. Ivy bridge is just plainly better than Sandy, even if the differences aren't huge for most use cases it's still worth having if you're putting a large load on your computer. Especially if you're willing to go to the trouble of flashing a BIOS that allows non-OEM batteries and switching the keyboard (if you prefer the classic one) then you can get an Ivy bridge machine that's outright better.

Of course it's technically possible to get **20 series models to use Ivy bridge processors, but given the time and effort needed you're just as well off starting out with a **30 model where you get other minor shit like USB3.

>>59505917
Going off a quick check of German Ebay, the starting price for any T430 is double that, and you're getting the HD+ screen as well. So yes that's a very cheap price, though it doesn't mean there has to be something wrong with it. Just be prepared to check it over thoroughly and perhaps fuck around with returns if need be, though the same goes for anything second hand regardless of price.

If it's a fresh install you might as well just reinstall though, it'll be about as quick and transferring your files across will be easy from that point anyway.

>>59507200
SDD upgrades for retards:

This will only work if you have less data on the 160gb then the capacity of the msata
1. Install both disks into the machine
2. Download clonezilla live cd and burn it: clonezilla.org/downloads.php
3. Boot the shit
4. Go through the on screen instructions (easy for any non-nigger)
5. After cloning is done, remove the chicken shit 160gb HDD
6. ???
7. Profit

But wait, you get no profit because your running fucking xubuntu.
Nigger, get a real os like Gentoo, Temple OS, or even plain ubunut is better.
I suggest you just copy all you important files to a usb stick and make a fresh install,
but you know what they say, niggers never learn.

but absolute shit compared to the older (pre t420) thinkpads.
I've dropped my t460 2 times already, once on the edge with the battery.
This made one of the battery holding switches pop out and have the battery be losely held in place, and the screen slightly bent outwards because of malformed hinges.
Second time I dropped was game over, I pulled on a headphone cable and the laptop fell face down from a table about waist height.
This caused both hinges to break off the laptop, and the screen to eventually fail.
Compare this to my t40 which I have thrown multiple times across the room in fits of rage and still works perfectly.
The new thinkpad durability is shit.
>Keyboard
Even though all the nig/g/ers here complain about the new keyboard being the worst thing about the new thinkpads,
its actually quite good, and I would say much better for typing than the old t40 keyboard.
The t460 keyboard has much more clicker and responsive than the t40 keyboard,
and the spaced out keys give me much less mis-typed words.
The only thing that is better on the pre-t420 keyboards are the layout,
which is very important because everyone on /g/ is a professional video editor
that uses millions of key-shortcuts that all use the home, end, insert, and delete buttons.
>Screen
T460 screen was superb, I have the model which had the 1080p IPS display.
Screen was bright, colors were great, and the resolution was sharp.
However, all this does not matter if the screen is not attached to the computer anymore from a fall off a table.
There are older thinkpads that have screens that are on par (x220 IPS display)
or even better (t60 Boe-Hydis AFFS display) than the newer thinkpads.

>Linux Support
Despite what everyone tells you, absolute shit.
Yeah, wifi drivers will work out of the box on even the most difficult of distros (Gentoo),
and graphics drivers too (no shit its intel HD graphics).
However, there are so many other fucking problems with linux on this shit.
The clit mouse is as hard as dehydrated shit to get working on.
You have to fuck around in the xorg.conf for a couple of hours with joystick variables to get the trackpoint to work.
And because of the oversized trackpad for nigger fingers, you have to disable it.
But guess what dipshit, even after you disable the trackpad,
if you put your palm on the trackpad while using the trackpoint like a normal person,
the trackpoint will zig zag like a shit headed fuck high on ASSSSSS.
So, you have to arch your hand like a fucking spider to use the trackpoint.

In short, the new thinkpad is as bad as /g/ers say on /tpg/, but not for the reasons they say.
Go get yourself a x220 or build yourself a t601f so you can be the most badass fucking shit in this thread,
and stay clear of the lenovo chinkshit chicken-shit bullshit.
Also by buying gook-no-vo's horseshit your supporting their new thinkpad design,
if every nig/g/er on this board stop buying this shit, lenovo might make a retro thinkpad to appease us and get our shekels again.

Yeah, that was like 20 years ago.
>>
Why isn't the t520 in the recommended list, it has better cooling and a better display than the t420 yet is about the same size and retains all the t420's features.
>>
>>59507259

No.
>>
>>59498228
Same, X220 as well. I just stop using it and at times it just drifts off into the sunset.

I'm pretty happy with the machine but the trackpoint is one of those memes I shouldn't have listened to. After weeks it hasn't gotten more comfortable to use than the first day and I've seen trackpads a lot more comfortable to use. Hell on Windows the trackpad on the X220 ain't so horrible either.

Lenovo spec on batteries is bullshit, its either to low or to high.
They probably tested a quadcore, not an i5, for that battery test.
A 1080p screen isn't that much more power, considering its also a TN, not a IPS.

It's not quite as bad as it looks for Australians, we can get the same brand new models off of eBay for half of what Lenovo asks.

In 6 months they'll probably be doing deals every other week on them that actually make them competitive, since selling goods on a regular basis apparently doesn't fit within Lenovo's business model and they need to wait till anything's on the verge of replacement to sell to consumers.

You have to edit some shit if you decide not to use the touchpad at all, which doesn't work well anyways.

Some FingerZ values on the voodoohdaps2trackpad file or something like that.

Works for me too, but the system is noticeably slower than anything else to be quite honest. I get that the micron C400 is a shit SSD but there's that delay I can't find on different systems. I keep it installed on that thing because it's still far simpler to do shit like connect to it through VNC but I'll admit this system doesn't make the thinkpad look like a fast tool to use.

Guys, any great tips on how to use the dock without butchering the battery? I normally keep my t430 docked at the desk so it rarely gets moved and use an another laptop as a portable when away from the desk...
So far I've tried taking it out of the dock every now and then but its rather annoying as all the cables are plugged into the dock.
>>
>>59509740
Set charging thresholds. If you don't need long battery life then it's healthiest to keep it around half charge, ie 40-60% cutoffs or so.
>>
I need a new laptop for uni, basically just going to be taking notes and watching movies. What would you recommend, does 4gb/8gb matter for this? And SSD or HDD?
>>
>>59509876
Look at the X220 and T420 as per the OP. Maybe also the **30 equivalents. Those are where the value and quality are right now.

>memory
It won't matter. It's piss easy to upgrade down the line anyway.

>SSD or HDD
SSD will be far better. Maybe you'll want extra space on the cheap, in which case HDD could make sense, but these things can take both anyway so it depends on how much you want to throw at it right from the start and which model you go with.

I bought the W530 I am writing from from Luxnote.

They are a bit pricey but their laptop was good.

Mine was "Grade B" but was practically new in my hands.

The keyboard was treated somehow and coated with something that made it look brand new. This thing came off pretty soon, but the functionality of the keyboard was unaffected.

The touchpad sticker was replaced by them with a brand new one, so no problem there either.

One last thing, My W530 had a protective sticker covering all of the top lid (pic related). Not a problem. I decided to keep it, as it might be covering some serious flaws. It's not that ugly after all.

Would I buy from Luxnote Hannover again? FUCK YES!

I am considering buying another W530 for my brother: spreading the tried and true cult of ThinkPad(s) all through my family!
>>
>>59485993

I'll be picking up an used X200s in a couple of hours...

Seller says the battery is dead and it's not going to work.

What other things should I check?

Are X220 batteries compatible with X200s ? I could use a spare one to check...

>Are X220 batteries compatible with X200s

>>
>>59510124

It's okay to disagree.

I would have preferred a blank lid too but after all i don't mind it and it might be covering some serious scratch.

If I pull it off and there is a serious scratch i should either buy a clean lid or buy another sticker.

Either way I would be fucked. So i kept it.
>>
>>59510135

Very comfy, if you ask me.

the only unfixable problem is that it's heavy as hell, but i knew what i was going to face.

keyboard is replaceable, and my i7-3720QM still beats the crap out of modern ultrabook-series i5s and i7s (all way up to 7th gen dual-core, ulv found in, for example, t460).

So yeah, this is a heavy machine, but it's quite future-proof.

How was the battery on your laptop ? That is my main concern with this buy.

I can fix cosmetic wear with something like a wrap (like you did) or by putting in a palmrest and keyboard from a T520, and i plan to upgrade the monitor to that 1080p panel, but if the battery is borked it's going to cost without being an upgrade.

disasemble the cooler (or the whole laptop), clean the heatsink+fan. Remove old thermal paste, clean cpu and heatsink and re-aply new paste properly before reasembly.
