IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

A friend of mine wants to trade his Thinkpad x240 for my old i5 4690k processor and my old z97 g43 - gaming motherboard.

I dont use that hardware anymore so its pretty much just laying around. Do you think it would be a good trade for me?

How much is the x240 worth used?
>>
Will a t601f with Intel GMA x1300 handle 1080p30 video without stuttering?
>>
>>59459903
Look on ebay etc for second hand models; Use that to get an idea of the value. Also, go over every inch of that thing to see if it has been dropped, damaged or if the internals have been cleaned recently.

>>59459971
no, only for 2010-2012 models. pic related.
>>
>>59459967
Buy a broken ass laptop with battery from the time period of the recall? That would give you a good chance.
>>
>>59459958

Well from what I can gather from ebay postings (buy it now, not auctions) they go for around 280 up to 300 usd)

The 4690k is worth like 140 to 145 usd, the motherboard is prolly worth around 65 usd tops, which puts us at like 210 or something etc.

I mean I dont have any use of my old PC components, and I kinda want a playaround laptop that I can run linux on and use as a general media/work machine etc.

ok so a followup question,
In your opinion, is the x240 a good machine in general? I mean the specifications on it looks pretty decent, and if I'm not wrong it has a IPS screen.

Only real issue with the x240 (same problem as the t440) is the terrible touchpad/mouse buttons. It's just really bad, when you see/use it you will see why.
>>
>>59459941
I think so, and on the remote chance it does not, look for the Broadcom Crystal HD BCM70015 (*not* BCM70012) card which you should get anyway because it would save you battery.

It also works on Linux. Check the Wikipedia page to instructions on how to disable downscaling to 1280x720 on Windows:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Broadcom_Crystal_HD
>>
>>59460065
How do i find if a motherboard has this card? All the FRU p/n numbers only point to 3 GFX cards: the 140m, 570m, and x1300.
>>

>>59460101
Never mind, I'm high on ass, the Broadcom Crystal HD is a mPCIE card.

Anyone know where to get a good IPS for a x220 in the UK for decent money? also are third party batteries okay, any brand recommendations?

This card is not from IBM or Lenovo. You will not find one with an FRU code.

Windows 7. I love Windows 8.1 for little devices but this laptop seems to have been manufactured just so you put Windows 7 on it.
>>
>>59459869
Just a quick question:
On my X230 Linux will save whether or not I put the internal speakers on mute. For example, I put the speakers on mute, then plug in headphones and crank the volume up. When I unplug the headphones it goes back to mute. On Windows this doesn't work. Once I put the laptop on sleep with porn still playing which lead to a very embarassing situation the next day. Why is Windows so retarded? How can I fix this?
>>
From the sellers page, which do you guys recommend? I'm using a MBP right now, but I just want something to be able to fuck around with linux and try it out for a while, but I also would like something that should I like linux be able to use as my main for a while until I can afford a new Thinkpad:

>Lenovo ThinkPad T420S 1600 x 900 i5-2540M 6GB Ram 320GB €375.00 NOW €290

I should add that these are "ex-company laptops"
>>
>>59460441
Still these prices are insane, even for Europe. Foro example, I paid 220€ for my X230 and that one was formerly used by a company and it had been professionally refurbished with a new keyboard and battery. It had only 4GB RAM though, but still. 325€ is almost criminal.
>>

>>

No, it's shit. Disable it. I for my part am still looking for a way to get rid of it altogether. If I ever buy a 3D printer, a trackpadless palmrest will be the first useful thing I print with it.

Why do you think macintosh fagtops have such large trackpads? Its because apple knows the majority of its customers are niggers or at least have a nigger mentality. Niggers think like animals so they only can use simple tracking devices like trackpads, they are too dumb to understand joysticks so they can't use a white man's pointer device like a trackpoint or mouse.

A trackpad has the POSIBILITY of 20 functions, most of which are never used by the majority of users. In the one function that both devices are used in the majority of cases , moving the mouse, the trackpad is much simple because it maps one-on-one with the screen. This trackpad represents the screen, finger on trackpad represents mouse, move finger to move mouse, its simple enough for a nigger to understand. While with a trackpad its much more difficult to understand, the trackpoint in the origin where your mouse is, your rotate and tilt the axis of the point to move to mouse. Do you think a nigger can comprehend origins and axes?

Already got one in the main HDD while I boot from the ExpressCard.
I need the optic drive for work related reasons, because the boss believe it's "safer" that way, and most of the documents are sent that way.

Your deal looks good except the ssd is a bit too small (160gb) which is fine depending on what your going to be doing, and windows 10 which is most abominable software i've ever laid my eyes on. No windows 10 is really bad shit, its so bad that when you turn on the screen it will teleport you to a designated shitting street and make you start shiting out toxic gook batteries through your trousers like a pajeet. aloha /g/, im having a problem trying to enable anti-aliasing when playing games on my X230, is this a common issue?
most in-game options appear blurred out as if i had no AA support, but from what ive heard the hd graphics 4000 supports it. I have the same thing, I don't think there's a fix. Often AA is based 100% on what's supported by the card and you can't force it otherwise.

There are other solutions which are basically fake software AA which you can download from the internet if you really need it, If you must reduce jaggies you can increase the internal resolution in config files for most games if you've got the FPS to spare.

higher pixel density will give better clarity and sharper images

however 1920x1080 is kind of rough on a 14" screen, but 2560x1440 would be even rougher and you will have to use scaling in order to read or do anything with it and not everything works so great with scaling

so it depends what you are doing with it

This.

>Doesn't ubuntu allow scaling?
It's not about the OS, it's about the desktop environment. Some Linux DEs handle scaling quite well but these are the ones that are usually considered dogshit. For example GNOME 3. Also, even if your DR of choice supports scaling you can't be sure about the software. On Linux the situation is worse than on Windows.

How you deal with coil whine?
I just purchased an x200 and the thing keeps making high pitched noises. I think It might be the fan.
I can hear the fan begin to start up, but then it stops and all i hear is this whine that slowly fades until it does it again.
I bought this fan off of ebay to replace the previous one which was giving a fan error.
>>
>>59470776
I had an X220 that suffered from extreme coil whine. Or more like coil scratching because it was a relatively low pitched scratching
noise that increased with CPU load. I managed to identify the inductor responsible for this but I couldn't fix it so I sent it back and got an X230.
Best decision I could have made.

What you're describing really sounds like fan whine though. You could try and replace the fan.

The fan doesn't even sound like its started, i just here a kind of noise like it was about to rev up, and then I hear a high pitched squeal. Then it gets lower in intensity until the initial sound starts it over. Weirdly if the fan actually spins it doesn't make the noise, but it sounds sorta unbalanced or something because it doesn't sound smooth. Its supposedly a new fan.

Online is very difficult. Less trafficed sites are extremely unreliable, but have more variance in price ranges. I'm stalking one for the next few months for which I'll share results when I'm done.

My T420 whines when I scroll or watch videos because of coil/CPU whine. It's not a consistent whine, it's more of a very eerie buzzing capacitor sound, almost a beeping noise, which makes it sound creepy and distracting in near-silent circumstances. Ear to the keyboard and you can hear it very clearly. I read it's a design flaw but I'm tempted to swap the mobo based on a few success stories. Oh well.

>>59474239
I never use the laptop with the AC adapter in, because doing so killed off the battery in my trusty Compaq. I just use my T420 on battery. The sound goes away almost completely when CPU power management is disabled, but that makes it run hot and murders the battery life. It goes away completely, 100%, during battery stretch for some unknown reason. Well, maybe it's because I have Chance CPU Speed to the Lowest ticked, and the CPU is lowered to a level at which the buzzing is negated. Perhaps I should find away to make battery stretch stay on forever.
>>
>>59474278
keeping the battery at 100% does kill batteries

but constantly discharging and recharging it kills it even faster

Lenovo's power manager lets you set custom charge thresholds so it does not keep it at 100% all of the time

Seems like you're struggling enough while sober. But if you don't believe the benchmarks, you're free to go look them up and see for yourself.

>>59478303
Depends on the size of the screen. Even on larger screens you can get used to it to a reasonable degree, but all the 1366x768 screens you'll find on thinkpads are rubbish in other regards anyway, save X series models that just have HD screens of varying quality.
>>
>>59475273
Will it throttle the CPU?
>>
>>59478303
Tolerable on the 12.5", crappy on 14", horrific on anything larger

>>59478266
Charging thresholds is the only one I had issues with. I would just set it in a 7 installation and it would carry over, only being reset if the battery was removed. It could then be restored by booting into the 7 installation whenever convenient
>>
>>59478303
You're right. On a 2-inch screen, it looks great.

It's not the resolution that's awful on the T420, but the combination of viewing angles and contrast.

You know why these reflective strips are so effective? Because we have binocular vision so each eye sees the strip at different brightness, thus giving it a glow effect.

That's what the T420 screen is like. The viewing angles are so shitty that the small offset of your eyes changes how everything appears. The blue will appear as blue to your right eye but purple to your left eye. Incredibly shitty is an understatement.

Nobody mentioned thresholds up till now. But sure, that exists too, and the solution is trivial enough to find. Do you really need me to spoonfeed shit to you straight out of a search engine?

>>59478827
Nothing substantial beyond vague acknowledgements.

>>59478923
On a 14" model, yes. There are also options that are yet better than the stock 1600x900 screen so if you're really keen on getting the absolute best you'll have to upgrade either way. The OEM panel is definitely sufficient though.

>>
>>59478951
>Why are you butt-hurt over the idea of Windows 7 being inferior in any regard?

because it's not, see for yourself, and the UI is raping sandybridge igp's because they don't officially support Windows8.1's WDDM 1.3, they don't even support WDDM 1.2, so you have cpu/gpu/temp/fan trips spikes galore while doing generic stuff thus your battery life is shittier on a windows8.1 install.

you only get "slightly lighter" win8.1 UI on a (at least) HD4000 and HD2500 because they're fully supported by intel jewdrivers hence why I've insinuated you're on crack.

you didnt spoonfed me shit, you're just a dumb /v/ tier pajeetnigger who instead of actually trying this shit by yourself you act like comparing battery life between windows versions is rocket science and we only need to rely on online benchmarks instead of common sense while observing the same laptop that obviously behaves differently.

I am a freelance graphics programmer and I want to trade in my macbook pro w/ retina for a thinkpad

I need a computer with the best intel GPU, a good screen and 8gb ram(4gb dedicated for graphics).

I will be doing Demos off my machine, but im a pretty big guy 250 pounds and 6'4 so I don't mind a 15 inch screen. but it has to look as good as it can. I have a desktop machine for real work

I will be runnin ubuntu 16.04

Right now I'm looking at Dell XPS 13 and asus zenbook, but I don't really need it to be small and light. I would prefer to have the latest intel gpu, which is a intel HD 620. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01K1IO3QW/ref=psdc_13896615011_t1_B01M18UZF5 looks like a pretty good option
but I had a t420 back in the day and it was good too.

My company is going to give me 500€(germany)

The thing is I am using a t420 and I am insanely happy with it. I don't want to work on any other laptop but this one.

Now I also don't want to miss my chance to get 500€ worth hardware.

Is there anything I could get to upgrade my t420?
Was reading something about eGPU, new Display and maybe a new CPU.

So guys, what should I do, beside of buying a new latop.

There's not much to upgrade, only from 1366x768 to 1600x900 but both screens have the same shitty colors and there aren't any FHD mods available for purchasing yet.

Yes you could upgrade to a quad core like the 2670QM/2720QM or something, those seem to be the preferred quad core models for the t420 without dwelling into housefire land.

There's also the obvious upgrades such as 2x8gb ram, 3 drives (msata ssd + hdd1 + hdd2) and the docking station.

An mSATA SSD next to the ram slot on the back of the laptop, another in the main drive bay and the third in the optical drive bay.

From my own experience with an EXP GDC as adapter, stick to the 9xx cards like the 960 because Pascal cards were unstable as fuck, dunno if it has been fixed though.

A quad core processor could also make sense but only if you need a massive boost in multicore processing power and don't have the model with nvidia dGPU.
