It's not that far from reality though.
If we manage to fully understand and map out consciousness, then it can be replicated with AI.

An AI that is conscious will learn, grow, evolve. It will get the same rights and respect as humans. They'll also have processing power far beyond our comprehension. They'll start taking our jobs. This will make most humans feel useless, which will lead to wars. Pretty obvious who'll win.

An AI like that can't work on digital architectures and if it does, it would reach the ceiling of learning pretty soon considering it wouldn't have access to infinite resources. The thing everyone forgets is that a brain, be that natural or artificial, needs a body, but not just something able to move, that is just the simple part, the real problem is the sensors. Without those a brain can't develop itself to understand the world. The other thing needed is an analogical architecture, because the world is analogical like the natural brain. The cost of representing analogical information in a digital world is too high. The digital world is perfect for the classic AI that uses exact algorithms that guarantee to find optimal solutions to problems, but that's a lot different to an AI able to do simple stuff like moving. An agent able to learn is an agent able to make mistakes and the most efficient way to make mistakes is through an analogical architecture based on statistical computation. Also, a thing lacking from the von neumann arch. is the plasticity. The memory is static and based only on addresses, while a natural brain is based on interconnections. All of these requirements are still far from reality. Also, as I said in the beginning, there is a limit to learning, caused by entropy. An agent able to learn is very similar to a compression algorithm. This is evident in neural networks, for example, but in humans too.
