The tapes are reasonably priced, but the machines to write on the tapes are not. You need to have massive data storage needs before that becomes a good option.

keep it away from light
keep it away from electrostatic, sound waves /EMF, perma/electromagnets (this includes headphones, speakers, and phones)

ALL
keep it dry and away from moisture
well cooled (according to its temperature range)
away from crazy ants or real bugs
avoid storing it in a shaky/vibrating place (beside rpm machines like desk fan)
do RAID backups or offline backups

Additional:
seal any possible entrance for ants/bugs
when using wired external drives keep the cables separated to avoid static from surface.
shield your drives or make a Faraday cage if you really love them
avoid dusty places and keep the store area clean
buy and use cheap CD/DVD/BD blanks for data you use regularly or data you really want to last forever, keep in mind other brands are shit so try them out. I recommend Mdisc although havent tried bc not available where i live.
dunno bout tapedrives or others but try them too.
lastly: keep your place in well balance and exorcised and try fengshui to avoid poltergeist or other immaterial attacks.

With NTFS, I've read that it leaves gaps between files to allow for small expantions but this expantion never really happens and instead these little gaps get filled with normal files that end up getting fragmented across all these gaps. I use the program "Defraggler" from Piriform, which has a free space defragmenting tool to try and fill these gaps I guess, along with the normal gaps that form from constant filling and deleting of data.

I've been looking at tape drives on ebay now, and see used LOT5 drives going for 200-$300. HP brand. The price of the LTO5 tapes seem to be a bit cheaper than single sided BD-Rs (per GB), at least the no name BD-Rs.

I know a guy who downloads porn like a mad man. He has like $40/month worth of subscriptions to major porn sites and downloads or rips high quality 1080p/4k hour long videos and stashes them all. Completely uncompressed. The guy just bought 4x6TB hard drives (12TB usable, ,12TB for backup) because his collection is so large. He's already half capacity and it's been like a month.

What would you even do in that kind of situation?l for backup? A shit load of high capacity Blu ray disks? At first I wanted to poke fun at him, but honestly that's like the best way to get used to doing large scale backups, raid array restructuring, etc.
