It's not really broken, it's just shit for the average person, especially rural areas. We're making more money than ever, but a higher percentage of that stays at the top. This has been the dominant change over the last 30 years. There's lots of ways to improve quality of life and maximize individual potential, but we're basically doing the opposite of them.

I have this shitty laptop, the screen broke, had it in my closet.

Imperative programming. Which is basically just listing a bunch of tasks without thinking about the data in any particular interconnected way. Try that shit out in a library larger than a gnats tit and you end up with DirectX.

Stop being beta loser letting themselves bullied by antisocial idiots and just use OOP already. All it is is grouping different sets of data together and grouping those sets of data with methods. It had nothing to do with garbage collection, centralized error handling, or data caching in the form of factories (which are all good things, but have nothing to do with OOP).

Is the Ryzen 1700 a reasonable CPU to upgrade from a 3570k that runs at 4.2GHz?
It's single core performance is better than mine currently and I do some video encoding every now and then, so the 8 actual cores would be kind of nice to have.
I do play games every now and then, but I'm mostly GPU bottlenecked anyway and only have a 60hz monitor.

I just can't make up my mind and would love some more oppinions on that.
I cannot justify buying a 4 core CPU in 2017.

If temps are all fine, it's either power supply or graphic card dying. Borrow a graphic card off someone and test it. If it will happen again, then it's probably the power supply. Just remember to get a different GPU that has similar power consumption.

>>
>>59481277
You can always give it to some local computer shop for testing and they should diagnose the issue for some fee. Or order a graphic card off amazon and return it within 30 days. You will only pay postage fees.
>>
>>59481176
it replaces init scripts that varied drastically from one distribution to the next, thus streamlining and unifying linux. you can take what you learned from one distribution to the next much easier.

standardizes startup and management of running processes, much simpler for limiting access to processes, or setting specific environments up

has scope creep because it is replacing many disparate programs/solutions into a unified and streamlined solution that people who have been working with for a long time hate because they have to learn something new

My """"""""""""init""""""""""" system does not need these
>>
>>59480987
I can only explain it conceptually:

GPU has a lot of (simple) cores, 1000 or more, while a CPU has only about 4. The cores on the GPU are much simple tough (support less assembly instructions).
But if you are able to parallize your workload into a lot (say 1000) different subsets you can run it on the GPU much quicker in parallel (if the assembly instructions the GPU cores provide are enough for your use case)

Yesterday i had to swap some HDDs around, so i removed the cover, turned off the power, held the power button to make sure its all dry and began my work. After disconnecting what i wanted, when i tried booting my PC, there was no signal. No matter what i tried, both of my screens had no signal. I tried normal GPU, integrated CPU one, every possible combination.
Sometimes it would turn off and on by itself every few seconds.
When i took out the CMOS battery it gave me signal with usual "configuration changed, BIOS reset". BIOS worked, i set up time etc., restarted - no signal once again.
I went to my friend to test it with his PSU to make sure my one is not damaged - nothing changed.
After using the CMOS battery reset thing, we went into BIOS and updated it to the newest version. It seemed to work, it allowed me to boot Windows in fact, but after turning it off and on again there was no signal again. Swapping RAM had no effect on anything. Computer correctly detects both RAM and CPU (when i had signal after taking the battery out).
It wont run without battery, completely no reaction.

Specs:
MSI Z77A-G43
i5 3470 (1155)
2x4GB Corsair Vengenace
Club3D R9 285

I didn't want to make a thread for this because I'm not sure if this is the right board for this, but hopefully I can get some help here.

I just bought a Sanyo MS450 online which I was assured worked but it turns out it's got some problems with it. I'm not really surprised and for only $25 USD I'm not bothered enough to try to return it to the seller.

The radio gets power to it when I plug it in but the radio gets no signal, not even static. Both cassette decks don't work either, the one on the left doesn't turn the things that turn the cassette and the one on the right turns but very slowly and sticks often.

Is it possible to repair this with general ease? Could it just be a matter of opening it up and cleaning up some things or would it be more complicated than that? Hoping I don't have to scour the internet for some motors or something.

>tldr

>Bought radio for cheap, doesn't work
>Is it possible I can fix at home easily?

I don't have a lot of experience with fixing electronic devices but I like trying to figure these things out. I've looked online for repair manuals but haven't found anything for this particular model.

why aren't computers living up to their expectations?

>Computers offer the potential of instantaneous translation of any code or language into any other code or language. If a data feedback is possible through the computer, why not a feedforward of thought whereby a world consciousness links into a world computer? Via the computer, we could logically proceed from translating languages to bypassing them entirely in favor of an integral cosmic unconsciousness somewhat similar to the collective unconscious envisioned by Bergson. The computer thus holds out the promise of a technologically engendered state of universal understanding and unity, a state of absorption in the logos that could knit mankind into one family and create a perpetuity of collective harmony and peace. This is the real use of the computer, not to expedite marketing or solve technical problems but to speed the process of discovery and orchestrate terrestrial — and eventually galactic — environments and energies

It could be, it may be "dns router virus", try with another browser like firefox, check your browser's proxy settings. Try it with another pc and seriously read this from top to the bottom at least once. It will help you till you are dead. Maybe even after that.

The faeries in the computer are singing. Try good power bar for the funky monitor. But there's probably some difference in shielding that is interfering with the computer.

I checked it all and I don't have a dns virus or anything.
But I did check my connections and I found that I was connected to a public lan and had around 200 packets sent but none received. I disabled it.
Could it be a virus?

1. I have seagate ST series for internal storage, am I screwed?
2. Will storing a lot of data worn the drive out quicker in contrary to storing less?
3. Context:pic, what is the correct setting? Is it never?
4. On compressing, I used 7z to compress but the decrease in space taken is negligible. I selected ultra too. I need to persevere muh images saved from mongolian painting board. What to do? Thanks

Does encryption kill performance? I have 4 devices I am planning on encrypting. A Google nexus 10 tabled (already did the encryption). A Samsung galaxy note 5 (about to do the encryption). A windows 7 hp laptop and a 17.5 inch windows 10 hp omen.

Should I expect to see major issues with any of these things? I use the tablet just for comics, the windows 7 laptop is my normal laptop and the omen I've only used for steam games so far because I am not super big on windows 10
>>
>>59486538
Im assuming cloning copies everything over though, which isnt what i want and dont have the space on the new drive for anyway.
>>
>>59486595
And what program should I use for the laptops to encrypt them?
>>
>>59486604
sounds like you are running a non-optimal setup on your current drive. fix it and then clone.
>>
>>59486595
Phones and tablets have dedicated hardware for encryption well integrated with the OS, which generally prevents any loss of performance. For x86 PCs, recent CPUs have hardware modules that may or may not work with your particular encryption setup.
Either way, for most purposes you won't notice the difference. You might be able to find benchmarks for a similar CPU with a particular encryption scheme. Windows is best done with BitLocker or Veracrypt.

Is it safe to use Win XP in 2017? Can the lack of security updates be rectified with common sense or is it a virus-filled mess by default now?

mingw is being retarded and will compile my c++ files but hide the program executable. Any idea how the fuck to fix this? should I just re-install mingw?
>>
>>59486885
It's definitely more "virus filled mess" than "safe".
If you're smart about it and use a hardware firewall and otherwise up to date software (if that's even still possible) you at least won't be part of a botnet upon connecting the ethernet cable. You'll still be vulnerable to any malware that tricks you into indirectly opening something in IE, and you won't be able to open any ports for fear of exposing a vulnerable service that romanian kids are scanning the internet for nonstop.

Why do you want to use XP anyway?

You can stream to any RTMP service (also possible to use other protocols with custom ffmpeg output but that's a whole other story)

You can also set up a local RTMP server and stream directly to people.

I'm not too familiar with modems and their frequencies. The picture shows my current signal levels for my up and down streams. Are these normal? I feel like my upstream might be too high.

My download and upload is fine but when I need to upload a file or stream something I'm getting packets lost.
>>
>>59487555
Check your software volume/mixer settings for L-R 'balance' on the front ports. Check the cable and connector that connects your motherboard to the front ports inside the PC.
>>
>>59487598
Frequencies too high? signal level too high?? That would have nothing to do with packets lost. Why do you think you're losing packets anyway?
>>
>>59487140
Stop doing that and get a password manager.
>>
>>59487666
checked both, everything's connected where it should be and the audio is balanced for L/R

can someone explain how github is suppose to work?

im a senior CS major and i'm doing my capstone (basically a group project for a business sponsor, microsoft, intel, etc). our sponsor asked us to make a private github repo at the start of the year, so i did under my account

as far as i can tell, i cant make my own fork since i own the repo so ive just been directly committing anything i do while everyone else works in their own forks

but our work is never similar enough where we can just "merge" it, so i can't accept their forks or they'll just overwrite everything i have different wouldnt they?

everyone is working on different features of the project but so far we've just been looking at eachothers branches and then adding it to the main repo manually but this way it looks like one person is doing everything since they're committing it all

im very confused by the proper workflow necessary to use it

it seems like we work too fast for it to ever be ok to work on branches since by the time you update the other guy has changed so much that you spend more time looking at the changes than doing new work

If you want the name of the OS displayed as Xubuntu I don't think there's an easy way to do it, here's kind of an ugly workaround; save this in ~/.config/neofetch/config

ascii_distro="Xubuntu"

source /etc/os-release
distro="Xubuntu ${VERSION_ID} ${machine_arch}"

If you only want the ASCII logo you just need the first line, or you can do
neofetch --ascii_distro Xubuntu
.
