it isn't supposed to be the only data format you ever need

It's supposed to be easy and human readable

There are much better was to store data in terms of memory (storing numbers as numbers instead of ascii characters)

Any character sequence can be thus represented, the only downside being that you need two bytes to represent each comma or backslash.
