I was told by /g/ long ago that shutting down your PC constantly is unhealthy for it. Is this true? /vr/ seems to think otherwise, but then how come businesses leave them on and how come PC's stay on in the case of web servers?

Pic somewhat related.

Why the fuck do you think servers run 24/7?
>>
Businesses usually leave them on so they can run virus scans and other adminware while there's nobody around to inconvenience.

The main thing to worry about is stress on the hard disk motors from the initial spinup - it's less stressful for them to keep spun up the whole time. No need to worry about that if you're on SSDs though.

this was true like 20 years ago, nowadays it doesn't matter.
>>
There is also the issue with stresses caused by temperature changes.
Cold constricts materials while heat expands them. Similar to water in a rock being able to split it through repeated freezing and thawing.

Pretty much this.
Most operating systems automatically spin down hard drives after a certain amount of inactivity and spin them back up when needed to save electricity. So technically spin ups and downs happen multiple times if you leave the pc running all the time.
As far as any other component don't worry, I have a system from 1995 that I turn on and off pretty much everyday and it's still fine.

Are you a fool?

I'm with the school of thought that you should leave your computer on, but plenty of people shut theirs down when not in use. If you're going to go one way or the other, stick with it.

Just like how if you work an HDD from vertical you should never tilt it back to horizontal, especially after at least a year of hard use.

We only leave them on over one night of the week to run backups
>>
it doesnt really matter anymore. shutting it down will save some money on your electricity bill. i keep it on because i don't really care about an extra $100-200 a year or whatever it is to keep it running all the time. i've always had it on 24/7, never had any hardware problems other than HDs and fans dying.

If you use a piece of shit OS that is just one huge memory leak abomination such as windows, then restarts are required.
