Mini Disc was a successful format compared to its rival DCC.
>>
>>59463717
oops i didn't read/check image properly. i meant regular MD of course.

CD-burners became standard stuff during that period. So did MP3 playback from data discs.

PMP's started becoming affordable too. Though CDs had much cheaper $/MB ratio for a long time.

>>59464351
MiniDisc was excellent--its introduction predated widespread knowledge of mp3 and the compression method was less offensive to the ear at lower bitrates. 128kbps MP3s are unlistenable but ATRAC wasn't awful.

The real trick to MiniDisc was the editing. You could, from the front panel controls, split tracks, delete them, name them, reorder them on the disc, merge them...it was a digital mixtape that required no external software--if you could operate a tape deck you could use a MD Deck.

That's what was so cool about MiniDisc, there just weren't enough people that NEEDED that capability--plus Sony has always been Sony and price gouged the fuck out of it.

>HDDVD only died because it was cracked first
Or maybe because it was inferior tech and the people pushing blu-ray had a better game plan?
>>
>>59465029
>head to head
HDDVD was garbage. The players cost around the same as blueray players. Bluerays had more storage and more features. The Xbox360-CD (just like the Sega CD it was dependent on owning the Sega) attachment was stupid from inception.

The reason I bought a ps3 was it supported 1080p screens and was backwards compatible with ps2 game dvd's. Also the quality of ps3 games were amazing for 2006 standards. The original 360 didn't even support full hd while the ps3 out the box had so many features.

The ps3 was underated even with it's $500 price. Unfortunately my ps3 died from overheating 2 years later. I since moved to the pc 1440p master race.

None of the recent samplers by Akai have a zip drive in them, they're all CF or SD card now. I don't think Roland makes a hardware sampler like they used to (the s760 is the last dedicated sampler they made and the MV series were their MPC competitors) and the last few I saw didn't have Zip drives. Emu and Akai did inclue them in their samplers around the turn of the century but it's been well over a decade since any of them left the factory.

As an aside, I did have pic related briefly and used it with a SCSI Zip100 as an idea scratchpad of sorts. I really liked it, but I wanted the internal hard drive kit and it was retardedly expensive back then (2001). I ended up trading in and added a couple of bucks and got an Alesis NanoSynth.

>>
>>59466370
that's the thing, there are no good recent samplers, the new Akais are an insult, as a matter of fact, I'll take an old S3000 over a MPX16 any day.
Roland/Boss used more obsolete tecnologies, my SP-303 uses smartmedia, but it kicks major ass, the SP-808 used zip drives and other used CF cards that are harder to find
The only decent hardware sampler that uses SD media is the SP-404sx right now. The new Electribes are a joke, and the MPC live will use an internal HD (if it ever comes out).
The Octatrack is a decent current sampler but overpriced af and the workflow is hell.
DAWs killed the hardware sampler market a decade ago, hopefully they might come back

>>59466629
PSP is a tech from 2005. What else can you propose? Digital downloads? Most people had either ADSL or limited broadband, no 3G, EDGE is a peak of technology. SD cards? Too expensive, even today Switch devs complain they have to raise the price due to the cost. UMD had 1,8 GB (in 2005!), it was just the thing for PSP.
>>
>>59466721
PS Vita has games on flash cards and they're not more expensive.
>>
>>59466752
Vita came out almost a decade later, flash's had time to rise in capacity and drop in price. Still even today it would have been cheaper to manufacture games on optical discs than flash.

Minidisc was awesome. At the time you could pay upwards of $300+ for a 64mb mp3 player, some used sdcard which were tiny and very expensive.

Discmans still skipped, mp3 discmans were rare and skipped along with other issues, discmans had shit battery life for the most part during that time.

Minidiscs had godlike battery life, days on a single aa, (I literally never hit stop, I just left music playing all day) the rechargeable AA lasted at least a day.

Each minidisc could hold about 4 albums compressed (less if you care about quality) minidiscs were like $5 a piece, so you could travel and have a huge music collection and also not worry about scratching discs like CDs.

The main drawback was the fuckin software which was horrible (if you were ripping CDs or not using compression it was irrelevant). The hardware - well my device - had serious issues, went in for repair 5+ times (I think Sony blew over 3k+ on parts / labour especially as time went on and it wasn't being manufacturered anymore, one time the bill was more than the device new - Sony store warranties were fuckin legit back then they really stood by their products and ate the cost when hardware had issues)

It was awesome. iPods came out, mp3 players got to budget prices, and the himd was kinda late and folks had already moved on.

The original md was great I used it until i got a creative Zen.

I feel like it's the tradition now for scalpers to buy out all new Nintendo consoles on launch day and resell to the rabid fanboys for massive profit.

Sony put rootkits on their music CDs.

You're obviously too young to remember the anti piracy insanity of the early 2000s.

We saved broadcasts on Zip100s when I was working at a public access station.

Or, that was the plan. Nobody could get the goddamn thing to work so we just installed a cd burner.

The point of these things is to plug those gigantic fucking power bricks into these and have these run the the powerstrip. This way you don't lose have of your plugs due to X Company not understanding power bricks with the prongs on them are fucking retarded.

Because they figured people would figure out how to burn games if the PSP was just hi-md.

Also capacity, a dual layer UMD could hold 1.8GB.

Lolno. Ps3 was a massive disappointment at launch and continued to be for years. Sony lied about absolutely everything the machine could do.

Does no one else remember how many multiplat games looked WORSE on the ps3? Within ~2 years most games were more or less the same on both, but there really weren't any great reasons to choose ps3 over xbox. I had both but i usually picked the 360 version every time to avoid long ass install and load times. Also don't forget a lot of games were way buggier on ps3. I got skyrim on ps3 and quickly ran into the issue of constant game crashes and saves being deleted at random at around 70 hours. It was apparently very common. Bethesda released a patch after a while, but it had a habit of wiping all save files so i just gave up on it.

Don't know if you remember it, but Iomega used to ship an audio converter with their Zip drives that created MP2 files to store on your Zip disks to play music from. Just googled it, it was called Iomega Recordit.

I used it once. I converted a few Detroit Techno and Chicago House tunes to mp2 and stashed it on a Zip disk, played it a few times, then erased all of it.

It'd be cool, sure, but not very practical. Digital distribution is the way of the future. It's assumed (not agreeing here, just stating) that all people have super fast internet and plenty of storage to just download games. Plus you can just redownload whenever and don't have to keep track of physical media. Or so they claim anyway.

And add in processors of yore were not only uncommon, but added to the price of the cart. And they functioned more like accelerators. Modern systems cant really accommodate that. You cant really just slap in a single purpose component. These days it would likely add too much latency to be worth a damn.

I think this is because they decided to go with the unfamiliar Cell architecture instead of the more familiar PowerPC architecture like the 360 did. Apparently Cell is a bitch to code for. Kaz claimed it was used in supercomputers, but I dunno.

The station was staffed mostly with 14 year old volunteers (including myself at the time), a teacher coordinator, and like two old dudes that were actually in charge of the equipment but the equipment itself was government owned so good luck upgrading.

I hate when people use terms like, "digital," or, "physical," in this context. Games on an optical disc or cartridge? The data is still digital. Game downloaded to a hard drive? The game is still stored on a physical piece of hardware, the hard drive.

I prefer using the terms, "download," and, "retail," honestly.

Just look at the label to find out why it failed.

Digital and physical are more accurate, especially since you could buy a download from a retail store.

Don't forget that each one came with a unique serial number, so it actually reported barcode + unique serial number. And when you got it from Radioshack they would ask for your phone #, which they would then tie to the serial number.
