Vostok: The Official Timekeeper of Reddit
>>
>>59463897
Here are the simple facts: Nomos are literally the first new company to develop the capacity to design and manufacture mechanical movements including escapements on a series production basis since the 1960s. They join Vostok, Orient, Citizen, Seiko, ETA and Rolex as the only non haute horlogerie companies capable of this.

Developing this capability took a several year and ~12 million Euro investment in escapements and a further ~2 million Euro investment in designing the ultra-thin DUW 3001 calibre. These are enormous investments from a company with an annual sales volume of 10,000 - 20,000 units, and as a result must necessarily be reflected in increased unit prices.

In an affordable luxury watch market heavily dominated by Chinese-cased ETA-powered marketing-driven shitters, any watchmaker that makes the investments required to become a manufacture and actually increase the technical diversity of series produced mechanical movements should be applauded no matter whether you like the aesthetics of their product line. To the extent that Nomos succeeds by following this path, it may serve to encourage more investment in the technical aspects of watchmaking by other companies rather than just investing in more value engineering (i.e. cost-cutting) and more advertising.

Just in the last 10 years we have gone from a $1,000-$4,000 market where every single watch was powered by an ETA movement to one where you can now choose between ETA, Tudor, Nomos, and Seiko (8rXXs, 8LXXs). How can this development be regarded as bad for people interested in horology, regardless of whether you would personally buy any of those watches yourself? If only Miyota and Seiko would add micro-adjuster models to their ebauche offerings and Tudor would begin to use their in-house movement in more models, we could return to an era of real competition in movements in production watches not seen since the glory days of the 1970s.
>>
>>59463914
AFAIK Plebbit doesn't care much Vostok. It's more like the official meme chronometer of us and WUS.
>>
>>59463926
I will start supporting Nomos when Nomos stops basing their designs off of Judaic horseshit designed to subvert Western society.

The association with Nomos being a faggots watch is because that's exactly what they are, and I will NEVER EVER support them in any capacity until they decide to be something else.

Hi fellas

Lad here who had some questions about the JLC Master Control last thread

Been doing some research and maybe someone knows a bit more:

1. Is the bezel larger in the new Master Controls (Q1548420) vs the old ones 140.8.89? I'm not sure but to me it looks like it is, and kind of "covers" more of the dial, in a way

2. Are there any models between the 140.8.89 and the Q1548420 where they introduce the exposed back?

3. is the 140.8.89 just the Master Control or is it the Master Control Ultra Thin?

Cheers

Nope, it's what I'm saving for now. I never felt the old Explorers were quite perfect enough to justify the price since the 3 numbers don't have lume filling them so when you look at it from the side the dial can look pretty funky.

That one has the slightly longer hands, is perfectly sized at 39mm to suit any occasion for my wrist dressed up or down and the extra lume makes it look perfectly clean from any angle. Could easily be the only watch I wear for the rest of my life desu, though there are long waiting lists for it at the minute because it's so popular.

I like the new Explorers because they indeed fixed the kind of weird lume thing in the 14270, but I dislike they bumped up the size to 39mm. It's not that it's too big, but it feels dumb to have a complication-less watch that big especially in comparison to my 40mm Explorer II which has 2 more complications in it + room for the somewhat big (for it's time) bezel.
>>
>>59477218
Yeah it's definitely right at the upper end of what I would prefer, and if my wrist was any smaller I'd definitely go for the 36, so I can understand your preference.

Rolex had a line of affordable watches aimed towards British airmen in WWII that all began with "Air"-X that were aimed at being a frills-free, entry level watch that would have all of the accuracy and durability Rolex was known for while being obtainable on a WWII servicemen's salary, as your average fuckhead couldn't buy some high end pilot's chronograph or something but still needed a good watch.

sure, if you are buying an explorer because it's the best looking rolex, do whatever you want

But objectively, it doesn't have the history or the recognizable look of many other rolex models, and is usually picked by people who have the money to get a nice watch but got some weird feeling that it's a bad thing, and they shouldn't get one which would attract a lot of attention

Looks are subjective to a degree, but for example the impact and amount of Submariner homages speak enough of how that watch looks and how well it's received

subs, daytona, datejusts, and gmts all beat explorer at cultural impact, which I consider part of watch's history but I guess you could argue that?

and this one is I guess subjective, but I feel all of them and yachtmasters are more recognizable as Rolex to laymans than explorers

http://business.time.com/2010/05/07/study-low-self-esteem-makes-you-more-likely-to-buy-luxury-goods/

>"The gist seems to be that when you’re experiencing low self-esteem, you’re more likely to feel a stronger desire to acquire high-status goods — luxury watches, fancy cars, and such."

This is objective truth in any western developed society, the harder you try and show off how much money you have the less it's likely you really have any. It's no accident the people who are most well known for peacocking their wealth in the US are rappers who came from nothing.

If I went to work wearing a flashy sub there is no way on gods green earth I would get taken seriously at all, and that would be the same for any client I have in return.

not sure if same anon that started this shit

but

>pretending that explorer is a better rolex to buy than sub no date ( which is why I suggested, not a fucking hulk or smth )

> subs are accepted as dress watches and aren't out of place in any boardroom

we are debating buying a rolex watch, so the shit about high-status goods is already pass the point, what I'm saying if you decide to buy one, be a brave memer and wear your sub or whatever with pride, you earned it, dont buy a pussy ass explorer and beg that someone asks you "what watch is that?"

Just to repeat, if you just want an explorer because to you it looks the best, than sure go for it, but be aware that you are making the unpopular choice

Sup guys, I have a Casio AE-1000W and I want to put Cloth / Nylon straps on it, can a miserable cunt like me do it on their own or is that nearly impossible?

Also are nylon straps somehow blocking the watch or making the buttons unable to use? I have this kind of wave form in my current strap band out of resin.

Any input appreciated.

it seems to use conventional spring bars from what i can see online, so you'd be able to do it easily.

Eh, pretty sure GMT for a layman is just "Sub with an additional hand" if you're talking overall and not just enthusiasts. Datejust maybe, but I would argue it's specific configurations out of many (fluted bezel and yellow gold/bicolor).
Yachtmasters I _highly_ doubt, unless we're just talking a "gold Rolex" stereotype.

yachtmasters just look like subs

Not him but how the fuck is it any more "brave" to wear a no date?

It's just a bland version of the most popular watch in the world, it's about the safest choice there is.
>>
>>59481856

the point was that GMTs are more recognizable to laymans as ROLEX not a particular model

the 80s and dictators made datejusts pretty recognisable as Rolex too ( atleast the golden ones)

about the yachtmasters I guess that one you might be right, but I still think more people would think of rolex when they see a yachtmaster than an explorer
>>
>>59481909

it's more brave than a explorer

I just pointed it out as an example of a better looking rolex than an explorer, and I hate the magnifying glass on date version

>it's more brave than a explorer

It's the world's most famous watch design in black. Again, that's the least brave choice there is.

>better looking rolex than an explorer

Oh so we're just talking about your personal preferences. Got it. Just say that next time.

I'll be frank, I forgot there were Yachtmasters 1. I associate the name with the Yachtmaster II.

And yeah, they're pretty similar. It just seems like a more jewelery Sub, if that makes any sense.

>>59481746
a work watch is not the same thing as a dress watch.

it would honestly it would even be a stretch to call the Explorer a dress watch
>>
>>59481303

no, but people who dive don't use dive watches anymore, anyway. they use "dive computers" which are absurdly gigantic plastic contraptions suited only to the activity of diving.

they're nice enough.
i bought one a while ago when i was drunk web surfing
i just wanted a hueg watch
i had it on a black leather strap for a while and it looks good in that configuration, but i just put it back on the stock bracelet which is also pretty ok
it's a $100 watch and at that price they're nice for that price range
