Can anyone recommend a good bit of freeware to protect documents. I had a link to a website years ago that said it was the best at the time but I lost it. Also lets have a discussion on what makes them good.
Circumcise your hard drive. It'll protect your computer from viruses just like circumcision protects you from HIV.

...ok. Aside from that, do you recommend anything?
To get rid of files Im using File Shredder v2.0 with the DoD 5220-22.M algorithm. I use to use the Guttman algorithm with 35 passes but it takes too long and I've heard after 7-10 passes it's redundant.

Also sorry for not being clear on the OP, I meant file encryption or protection, although I could also use computer security software.
So you guys can have a laugh, Im using Panda Cloud and Microsoft Security essentials to protect my comp... I know, cringe....

Buy a flash drive/memory stick/whatever, put your documents right fucking there and encrypt the whole thing using VeraCrypt. If you're paranoid as fuck, you could generate a public-private keypair (see GPG) and encrypt the archive.
Look up "Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer".
It's not so much a virus scanner, instead it is a Host Scanner that analyzes how secure your computer is against potential hacking attempts.
If you are on Linux, the program "lynis" does the same
