This shit also apply to JACK, what are they thinking?
>what are they thinking?
You should know by now that Mozilla doesn't think clearly...

Firefox doesn't run on Linux. Please don't spread this mistake. Linux is just a kernel, mostly used in systems such as GNU or Android.

License cancer
>The Open Sound System (or OSS) is an alternative sound architecture for Unix-like and POSIX-compatible systems. OSS version 3 was the original sound system for Linux, but was superseded by the Advanced Linux Sound Architecture (or ALSA) in 2002 when OSS version 4 became proprietary software. OSSv4 became free software again in 2007 when 4Front Technologies released its source code and provided it under the GPL license.

particular, I've seen devices starting with "front" and "sysdefault"
being mapped to different hardware. I conclude that it's not sane trying
to present a nice device list to users in ALSA. It's fucked. (Although
kodi appears to attempt some intense "beautification" of the device
list, which includes parsing parameters from the device name and such.
Well, let's not.)
>No other audio API requires such ridiculous acrobatics.
>>59444031
When I tested it like 10 years ago ALSA sounded decent and PA sounded like a tin can. That's why I asked.
All hail our overlord Lennart Poettering (pbuh) and the Red Hat God for enabling such advancement.
How do you use anything but pulse on a proper Linux desktop, anyway? I'd love to use JACK for my music and videos, or at least something that doesn't need to be cranked up 60% just to hear a fucking piano.
>>59442262
Honestly though, Linux audio is just fucked.
Say on a modern distro your program still uses OSS, how does this audio actually get output?
Program ==> OSS (emulated by ALSA emulated by Pulseaudio) ==> ALSA (emulated by Pulseaudio) ==> Pulseaudio ==> ALSA (not emulated) ==> Sound output
How can anyone look at this and say that it's ok.
people dont have pulse installed?
tfw cant play anything when ncmpcpp uses alsa
only reason i use pulse

Well, /g/, here's your time to shine. Captaining FOSS for situations exactly like this. I suggest you all get to work, while the rest of us enjoy not having to worry about audio no longer working in our web browsers.
>>59444233
They could've forked OSS3. That only goes to show that freetard arguments that open source projects can't go dead because the source is open and anyone can pick it up are all bullshit.

It's ok
Linux and FLOSS are about chocie
As in, the code is there, so you are free to fork it and make it your own
Not as in, the developers are entitled to support your autistic software preferences based on pseudo-intellectual internet rants that you can hardly support with reason, let alone hard facts, and make fucking everything modular as all fuck or maintain 30 different branches for each autismal library/backend you may desire
If you consider yourself so enlightened and able to appreciate the difference between bloat and non-bloat then you should have no problem programming your own shit
also lmaoing @ suckless/catv kiddos who just started whining after systemd when udev/*kit/etc were the same sort of "anti-unix" software they hate, GNU is the definition of bloat, and the linux kernel itself is the definition of critical software with ties to shady organization

Pottering is killing Linux.
why is firefox so choopy and laggy but chromium works like butter?
Firefox and PulseAudio is FREE software. Anyone attacking it, systemd or Poettering is a Microsoft shill.
No one is forcing you to use Firefox. Use your own browsers if you don't like it. Heck, CODE your own! No one is stopping you.
Stop this anti-RedHat conspiracy theory.
>>59445699
Nooo, redhat software works too well, it's forcing me to use convenient software that paid professionals can tolerate
I want to write ten dozen scripts and carefully manage shell environment variables not have this shit that just works with a few tweaks in a config file. UNIX doesn't work like this! It's too easy!
>>59445734
I hear you brother, thanks to RedHat I can configure just a few scripts each time Poettering updates his software for us. Before things would just boot properly without modification.

Chromium and Nightly work the ~same on my computer :^) Make sure to force enable hwaccel and e10s. You can also increase dom.ipc.processCount for more processes. It does use more memory similar to Chromium. I set it to 8.

Chromium works better on my computer and they both take equal amount of resources on their default settings. I only use firefox for porn purposes these days.
How to fix
1) Read http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/blfs/view/cvs/xsoft/firefox.html
2) Edit mozconfig as needed, use the ./configure --help to view available options, change prefix, also add--enable-pie
--enable-ion
3) export your favourite optimization and hardening flagsexport CFLAGS="-march=native -pipe -fstack-protector-strong"
export CXXFLAGS="$CFLAGS"
export CPPFLAGS="-D_FORTIFY_SOURCE=2"
4) build
5) install
6) if needed install appropriate language pack and edit general.useragent.locale
