If you would like to try out GNU/Linux you can do one of the following:
0) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine.
1) Use a live image and to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything.
2) Dual boot the GNU/Linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or macOS.
3) Go balls deep and replace everything with GNU/Linux.

Pros:
-Everything is optimised for your system. The benefits of this aren't very large though- programs might run 0.1% faster or something.
-you have complete control over everything when a program is compiled. IE, remove gtk support and force qt if that's what you want.
-you learn more about how the system works
-you get packages quickly

Cons:
-waiting for compilation is an inconvenient timesink. You probably should compile your whole system again if there's a gcc update.
-very confusing for new users.
>>
>>59439073
How long would an average update take on a modern (4 but likely 6 core) processor?

Thanks anon
>>
>>59438937
gentoo is a meme
if your hardware is old, it's nice to have gentoo because the 0,0001 additional speed
if your hardware is old, it's bad to have gentoo because the 100000,0 additional waiting times till compiling is finished
if your hardware is new, you don't need the additional speed
if your hardware is new, compiling is faster
:^)
>>
>>59439100
"average update" is meaninless
most updates will take five minutes
updating a browser or the kernel will take probably an hour on a good processor. recompiling the whole system can take 3 hours. Compiling is one of the few tasks that actually multithreads well, so modern 6-8 core AMD processors are actually better than intel for gentoo.
>>
What's a distro that isn't a meme?
>>
>>59439100
Not him, but it depends no how long you go between updates.
When I first started on Gentoo I was enthusiastic and updated daily. It took only a few minutes unless a huge package like firefox got pulled in or something (but if that's a problem you can always just get the binary version of larger packages, firefox-bin and not worry about compiling)

But now, with my 8 cores after going like 2-3 weeks without updating it can take like 2-5 hours I think, but I don't really time it I just do it over night.

>>59439279

I'll search again before asking again. Your info seems to have worked, although I did get a 'Arming ConditionNeedsUpdate...' message after running the command. >>
>>59439716
I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

>>
>>59445544
They draw the connection to the actual communism as a theory, socialist states like the USSR didn't call themselves commie because unlike with westerners the term had an actual ideological meaning.
Socialism was meant to help society transform it self to communism. If you think the totalitarian societies under socialism were unsustainable, you will be twice as sure actual communism was impossible.
The idea of doing things for free for the community with no money being part of the process was the actual goal. An anarchist utopia of free shit, love and no classes.
The joke is on the people that call him a commie, because if free software was communism we'd have achieved the impossible dream socialist societies died chasing.

Did you type sudo -k or close the terminal after that? Are you sure that no programs controls the keyboard and the mouse and start using the program againt your will? Are you sure that the terminal you see is really the default OS terminal. Are you sure that your user session is not hijacked?

I consider that all my session user are corrupted, and never give a way for user to reach root.

I log as root separately. That's far more sure than your shitty sudo.

I have a AMD Radeon graphics card which may be not supported by Ubuntu 16.04.
What should I do? Will upgrading to Ubuntu 16.10 or downgrading to 14.04 solve the issue? If yes, will it work as good as the graphics card works on Windows? Also will have to configure my computer or will the system work perfectly after upgrading or downgrading?

Am I damaging my computer by not using a OS supporting the graphics card?
Also my laptop takes like ~50 seconds to boot? Is that because of the incompatible graphics card?

I have thoughts about trying linux and ditching windows... again. I've done it several times, but have always broken the linux due to the possiblities for tinkering. I'd like to try this time Ubuntu, and I'd wait for the ZZ release. How is it compared to Win10 ? Is it faster, or is it already bloated ? I generally find gnome most comfy for me, the last I tried was fedora, but broke it. Should I go for Debian Gnome?

Got in a pretty weird situation concerning bootloaders. Had efi stub setup loading gentoo on X220, then compiled kernel with ck (BFS, MuQQS), kernel itself did not work, yet two initramfs did not fit in efi partition there was, should have used gparted to extend it, but overwrote the older initramfs with dracut generated one giving ck version. Kernel panic.

Do not have anything to boot in UEFI (EFI?) mode to modify efivars (live gentoo usb just modprobe efivars gives that there is no such module). Decided to install grub, bios one. GPT partition, grub_bios got generated alright, i guess, /boot partition separate or not, while booting, holding shift does not invoke grub and there does not seem to be any bootloader on HDD MBR at all, just that it does not respond in any way, only thing is grub files apparent (including the grub.cfg, which update-grub generated, including all it should have found).

It's like no matter how I install grub, it's not loading from bios to grub, heh. Using super grub2 disk usb it does boot. It has been like four days of dealing with this !@#$. Any ideas?

BSD uses wheel, for sudo on linux add them to the sudo group.

If he uses udev and logind it's bad to add his user to certain groups and unnecessary.

You're right however I think since most linux distros create a designated sudo group by default and sudo basic config has that group enabled by default it's the easiest to use that.

Looking for a lightweight replacement for xfce4-clipman.
Tad too heavy, I don't fancy a taskbar icon and I have no use for storing multiple clipboard lines.

So far any clipboard manager I've tried besdies xfce4-clipman has one fatal flaw - the contents of clipboard are lost when I close the application I got the selected piece of text from.

> How are they better than ext4? I've always used ext4 and never had a single issue so I don't understand how a different file system could be beneficial.

Btrfs is a very good FS. One of his most interesting feature is subvolumes : on a single partition, you can hold your / and your /home, which is nice if you are short on disk space. You can also “snapshot” a subvolume to get back to it latter while only the changes occupy disk space, neat, but now, the awesome : is is writable, too. snapshot your root subvolume, and reboot into it, try things, install cinnamon and gnome shell at the same time, try wayland, mess up things. you can destroy the whole system without damage : just reboot, delete the “root-experimental” subvolume, and everything will be fine.

there is also some other nice things, like the « your data is compressed on your disk, but is given decompressed when you ask for it » option, which let you save disk space and speed up HDD; the built-in support for raid 0 and 1 (5 and 6 are coming, but still experimental); the «you can check file integrity on demand» (not automatic ’cause of performance issues), or the fact that there is a defragmentation utility (ext4 don't have any)

Good thing, btrfs is considered stable since 2014 (it was born in 2007), and if you don't want to mess around, just create 2 subvolumes, @root and @home, and use it like if it was an ext4 disk. unlike ZFS, you don't need to install kernel modules or such, it is built-in the Linux kernel.

They are drawbacks, sure, due to the “only changes are saved” and the compression thing, it can be a bit tricky to know how much thing you can still put in it, and it is not possible to use swapfiles with it, so you will have to use a swap partition (or no swap at all).

But it definitely worth it.

Now the hidden files were deleted with the sudo rm -rf * command and I'm wondering if there is a way to recover them, maybe with some kind of file recovery tool. Fixing my entire rice will take me hours and hours of work.
>>
>>59462469
but, all your settings were on the hdd, right?
why aren't you using that?
>>
>>59462513
prev os: arch
ssd: boot, root, swap etc
hdd: home with pictures, videos etc
rice: meh, not what i wanted

before fix: manjaro
ssd: boot, root, the during install created /home
hdd: /home from previous install with pics etc
rice: newly created from scratch. satisfied, files probably on ssd in new /home

now: manjaro
ssd: only boot, root and swap
hdd: home
rice: fucked up

the only thing i can imagine is that the settings files for the rice were on the ssd in the home as hidden files and deleted in the process.
>>
>>59462601
Just recreate your rice imo. That's less of a headache than trying to recover the deleted data. I hope this serves a lesson to always keep a back up of those crucial files.
>>
>>59462601
oh, so you riced up the ssd /home, before migrating over your old /home
that's just asking for a fuck up right there
good luck recovering anything from an ssd, if it uses TRIM, that data's probably long gone

just remember: designate one space as your /home, if you want to reinstall/move things around or whatever, migrate your /home before doing anything else
trying to merge two home folders together is tricky business, you need to know exactly what you need from both, and considering you weren't even aware of where your wm settings were stored, you do not

Is there any way to make CM8888 cards actually work on any Linux distro? I mean Phoebius/Powercolor Devil HDC etc. ALSA doesn't support them, pretty much nothing on the internet about it, and it's the only thing that keeps windows on my ssd.

It seems it just did not write to MBR.

What could I get to boot from usb in uefi mode so that I could access to efivars (modprobe efivars)?
>>
>>59463229
why not just get a pci/e or usb sound card with known linux support?
i found several mentions of that chip/card when searching and it looks like people have mixed results, seems to be a pretty oddball/uncommon device
>>
>>59463347
how to not use windows if your sound card isn't working which pretty much fucks up whole setup then?
>>
>>59463229
supposedly, there are patches already in mainline. have you compiled a kernel before? that'd be where to start.
>>
im trying to access my hard drive from a live usb (ubuntu) but i get

"unable to access "drive"

error mounting /dev/sda2 at ...

and theres a shit load of stuff.

what do i do?
>>
Why so many people use dd instead of cat?
>>
>>59463428
You need elevated priveleges. Sudo or login as root
>>
>>59463395
i pad quite a lot for my actual setup, finding something to make it fit in place perfectly instead would be very hard, i already went through lot of sound cards, besides i'd have to pay twice as much for usb sound card comparable to this one

I have an Odroid XU4 with the cloudshell expansion and I want to run it with a display connected via HDMI and use the cloudshell display to show systemstats.
The problem however is that the shell script that displays the systemstats starts in tty2 (or any given tty) and automatically displays in the framebuffer 0. The cloudshell display is fb1 though.
Is there anyway to map tty2 permanently to fb1?

Or alternatively, can I just display the tty on the screen without it being managed by xorg?
The problem is also that if I map tty2 to fb1 manually with con2fbmap the tty2 takes every keyboard input from the other display/xorg/pty.

because with dd you can configure block size to optimize bytes transfer.
>>
>>59463499
how's that a benefit? why not let the program itself figure out the block size? do you use dd to copy files on your system too?

I was joking.
>why not let the program itself figure out the block size? do you use dd to copy files on your system too?
In fact I use dd when I want to copy a specific amount of bytes or when the target is a node (mknod).

I use rsync to copy files, not dd, not cp, not cat.

Next to http://, curl understands file://, which allows to curl files around locally.

$ echo foobar > op
$ curl -# file://op -o /tmp/faggot

Maybe, since *BSD are based on their own BSD kernel, just like GNU/Linux is based on the Linux kernel.

Yet, maybe he just meant that FreeBSD is a really powerful UNIX system, which isn’t false. I just wouldn’t recommend it for people new to the UNIX world, though: it’s just like suggesting Gentoo or Arch for a 1st try, a bad idea, even not accounting the driver problems you’ll likely get. If you are looking for somewhere to start, I’d suggest Linux Mint, Zorin OS or Manjaro Linux (the latter if you want to experiment: underneath, it’s Archlinux).
