My file manager shouldn't be a "meem". I also don't want a popup begging me to buy some outdated trash every time I want to unzip a compressed folder. RARLabs is also slow as shit at patching vulnerabilities in their code.
I used registered winrar and 7zip side by side for a bit recently after using 7zip exclusvely for many years, and decompression time seems to be of little difference and lzma2 from 7zip seems to compress slightly better than rar5.
The only acutal difference I noticed was that with winrar some archives would show me readme nfo files when I opened them and winrar extracts the tar's when decompressing them. Where as 7zip doesn't display nfo files for reading, and extracts the .tar file which you have to extract again if desired.
>>59438203
I did in 2004. I didn't know 7zip was even a thing for 4 years.
>>59438203
I still use the evaluation version of WinRAR. I tried 7zip for a while but it doesn't have an option to automatically remove redundant folders so I switched back.
winrar's icon > 7z icon
>there are people here who haven't edited their registry to make winzip think you've paid for it
>>59438203
No, I'm not some richfag that throws money at every beggar.
I use 7zip, but on an older machine it takes forever to encode. This is one area where I think WinRAR got it right. Apple did some experimenting with Lempel Ziv algorithms in an attempt to make it less processor intensive, but the results weren't any better than GZip.
>>59438307
WinRAR developers are Russian too. I guess you're fucked.
>>59438203
Worse compression, slower decompression, and proprietary.
Why would I use it, let alone pay for it?
Winrar basically wants you to use it for free. Regular consumers using it for free making it a more widespread standard. That means more corporations will use winrar to distribute files, and corporations do care about the law, and will buy winrar.

What for? I'm not a retard or a toddler so I don't use Winshit.
