Whats the point of 4k on a 5.5" smartphone?

4k is the lowest resolution that can support apps designed for 720p and 1080p screens with simple integer scaling.

Its also ultimately cheaper to fab higher ppi screens since if they fail QA check as a 2160p display they might still pass as a 1080p or 720p display.

It has become a standard metric, like megapixels in cameras. If they don't have a bigger number every year people won't think they are getting a better product.

Nobody needs a 50megapixel camera for snapshots, nobody needs an 8k smartphone but that's where we are headed because that's what people have been told makes one product better than another

You are wrong, because there is a limit of light that can be captured by 1 sq mm bazillion megapixel sensor and a screen which merely surpasses 600ppi while human vision can digest 900 ppi when looking really close like in vrtual reality applications for example.
