Look at Sinn or Damasko. Damasko's entry-level stuff is more interesting because it has the tegimented steel, while Sinn doesn't use it until a higher price point. But Damaskos aren't dressy.

People in those threads don't really care for quartz in general, unless it's a nice vintage or a high-end modern watch.

Speaking of which, the new Longines VHP are pretty cool. And the price soubds about right for a good quartz.

In theory a co-axial escapement should require no lubrication, be subject to little friction (and therefore wear), and extend the service interval of a watch while reducing how much it's rate changes over time as the oils age.

In reality it doesn't work because you have to oil it for cushioning in microscopically precise amounts or it will eat itself. It's much harder to service than a traditional lever escapement, and since you have to oil it anyway the benefits are Z E R O except it's much harder to service, more fragile, and more prone to catasteophic failure if not serviced correctly.

As you would expect from the Swatch Group, it's 100% marketing and 0% real benefit.
>>
>>59428538

it will charge indoors in normal lighting conditions in about 2 days and last for 10 months, charges in 6 hours outdoors
>>
>>59428538
Don't they work with artificial light though?

>>59428524
That's the thing, mechanical watches aren't just an appliance. They're objectively worse than quartz for the simple task of timetelling.
Most of us have our reasons to like mechanical watches that make giving away a bit of practicality acceptable.
>>
>>59428554
Do Daniels/Smith watches use oil in the escapement?

>>

I just want a nice simple diver that I don't have to fiddle with and kept wound desu senpai
>>
>>59428606
Interesting. I'm assuming it was expected to last the lifetime of the watch and not be a service item then.

Has anyone here read Daniel's "Watchmaking"? I don't actually want to make a watch, so I'm wondering if it would be an interesting read if you just want to learn more about watches.

quartz is good if you want to try a style without shelling out more than 20 dollars

my 7s36 is more accurate than cheap quartz desu. I haven't tested over long term reliability and it is dependent on position but day to day I can do +1-1 whereas my cheapshit quartz is rated for like 60 seconds a month

In most cases only high end production mechanical movements that have been carefully adjusted and regulated will reliably be more accurate than cheap quartz.

With a movement like the 7s36, the problem is not even so much getting it to be very accurate in the short term, but rather that it will have a really hard time holding the regulation for an extended period. Regulators without micro-adjusters move pretty easily from shocks.

>>59428744
yes it actually is. The 7s26 series of movements are capable of incredible accuracy for their price, they just aren't regulated out of the factory.

Cheapshit quartz that is in 5 to 30 dollar casios and all chinese fashion shit aren't as accurate as you think, they usually gain or lose about 2 or 3 seconds a day.

if my snzg15 gains 4 seconds on the table overnight and loses 3 seconds throughout a day's wear, it beats cheapshit quartz.
>>
>>59428744
>>59428767
>>59428777
just my experience. I know its not indicative of most people's movements,

and gaining 4 seconds and losing 3 is,'t the same as a consistent +1, but it isn't bad by any means .

yeah maybe not casio, looking around they are rated for about 25 seconds a month

>>
>>59428932

or you could get a waveceptor and never lose a second

over the course of a year a casio terrorist watch you don't fuck with will not be off by more than a min or two, where an auto will be off by half an hour, that is if you did not constantly have to fuck with it and reset the time every time it powers down or reset the month for every month that does not have 31 days...
>>
>>59428622
Who is daniel
>>
>>59429063
*Daniels'
It's my bad, I was obviously talking about George Daniels, the late inventor of the coaxial escapement and very traditionalist, English watchmaker. His book on watchmaking, with the most unoriginal title possible, is seemingly regarded as one of the best for aspiring watchmakers. It's Hajime Asaoka's reference, for instance, and I love Asaoka's work.
Daniels also taught RW Smith, who might just be the only truly British watchmaker at the moment.

Watch "The Watchmaker's Apprentice," amazing documentary about the man and the person who took over from him. They and a handful of other independents are the arguable true highest reaches of watchmaking, beyond Patek or anyone else. True handmade watches with their own engineering achievements conceived by one horologist from beginning to end. There's a purity to it not much else can match.

Not quartz, automatic just means there's a rotor in the movement that winds the mainspring with your arms movement.
>>
>>59441653
>but it seems to run out overnight?
Either you're not moving enough to wind it enough or the spring needs replacing, most likely the former.

a "watch winder" winds automatic watches.

>>
>>59442632
yeah they're a korean microbrand. they assemble parts sourced mostly in china, and use chinese and japanese movements.
they offer good value if you're looking at a spec sheet, but their watches are all copies of popular designs.
the quality is supposedly pretty good, and they seem to have good QC, which is the main advantage compared to buying a cheap watch assembled in china (where they have no QC to speak of and you're essentially rolling a dice). just keep in mind that if you have to send it back for whatever reason, shipping will be expensive, so you'd better hope you're not getting a DOA or damaged watch.
most people seem to be happy with their purchase.

Yep, seems to run slightly fast but works well. Also apparently this is one of those rare English/Roman day versions.

>>59443540
Very beat up yeah, so it's going to be with a worn down strap for now.

Not that guy but what makes it the best?

Why is the Orient Bambino considered a good budget watch? It doesn't even have sapphire glass.
>>
>>59444106
It is good, especially with the new movement
Looks great
Cheap
>>
>>59444098
that anon loves to cum while thinking about the movement. I wouldn't say it's the best.
i have to admit a central chronograph minute hand is nice.
>>
>>59444106

Clumsy people, I guess.
>>
>>59444098
It has the highly sought after Lemania 5100 movement.
>>
>>59444186
>clumsy people
You do realise that sapphire is more scratch resistant but also less impact resistant? Better scratch that shit up rather than drop it from a desk and have to pay 2/3 of the watch price for a new sapphire crystal
>>
>>59443398
Now this is a watch that has been diving for years and years. I'd invest some money on new gaskets, and maybe a new crystal/ polishing the case a bit and voila, almost new looking great Seiko skx.
>>
Orient Mako or Seiko SKX007?

I've heard that the Mako has a better movement, but nothing more about the debate

People who do shit like carry things around. So easy to scratch your watch on a stone wall in a narrow corridor...

Pic related is a mineral crystal. The scratch on 5 came from a stone slab I was carrying for a renovation.
>>
>>59444295
gotta clean the glas, I ate a greasy doughnut just before taking the pic
>>
>>59444285

Mako is a little smaller, doesn't wear as tall either.
SKX's bezel is really fucking tall for no good reason.

SKX will likely have better lume.

Flip a coin.
Heads; Mako
Tails; SKX

I removed the strap from my f-91w in order to swap it for the nato that should come next week. It's going to be a bitch to get the nato under the pins, but I'm ok with some bending.

>>
>>59444285
SKX is a better diver. Better lume, actual ISO certification, better bezel action...
The Mako/Ray is a desk diver. The movement in the new ones hacks and handwinds, which the one in the SKX doesn't.
The stock bracelet on the Orients is very serviceable too; the one on the SKX is not great.
If you want something that will actually withstand rough use, I'd get the SKX. Myself I got a Ray. I swim with it from time to time, but I just bought it for the diver look.

Remember, luxury pretenders are the most disappointing and tasteless watches around.

You either accept something what it is, or pay a higher price.

People are very good at identifying pretenders without substance.

The cliche orient, seiko, ect for budget watches exists for a very good reason.
>>
>>59444346
I don't think you'd have to bend anything (unless it's just that my NATO was exceptionally tiny, but I doubt it). It's surely gonna be a pain in the ass, tho. I used my springbar tool to hold it down, if that would be of any help.
>>
Any budget quartz chronometers, vintage or new? Doesn't have to be certified or anything, just an accurate as fuck quartz movement. Seiko GQ/KQ, Type II, SQ? Bulova 262kHz?

No radio sync pls, that's cheating.

>>59444359
Yeah. I had to put it on a clamp (sandwiched by some erasers protecting the watch) and hammer the pins with a piece of wire to get them out...

>>59444389
Well I got a 3€ nato from eBay, so it won't be the thickest ever, but we'll see.

>>
>>59444471
Still a chronometer, and like as you said, doesn't have to be certified, much more superlative
>>
>>59444443
The specs required for a quartz to be certified as a chronometer are much more stringent than they are with mechanical pieces, just saiyan.
>>
The hour and minute hands don't move past 12 on my seiko watch. Is sending it for repairs to an official location worth it or should I just find a cheaper private shop?
>>
>>59444559
What movement? Probably far cheaper to just replace it whole.
>>
>>59444571
>What movement?
The second hand moves normally. If I wind the watch back, the hour hand moves counter clockwise but gets stuck at 12. Minute hand works fine when I wind it but it's offset from how it's supposed to be. When the hour hand is on the 12, the minute hand is around the 5
>>
>>59444624
Not hand movement, you silly goose. What's inside the watch?

Sounds like broken hour wheel, those are one of the cheaper and easier to replace parts. But if you don't have experience in fixing watches better not do it yourself, as you need to take the dial and hands off, and you'll likely damage them.

How easy is it to get / install generic crowns and stems? Someone came to me with a fake rolex that appears to just be missing a stem and crown. Is it possible to cram something generic in there?

>>59441891
Yes it is a 3 minute timer. A Heuer mikrograph, c. 1973 running at 360,000 Bph (50hz) measuring 1/100 of a second intervals. I haven't seen the movement (this was given away as a gift), though I believe it's a modified valjoux.
