Because it makes it easier to connect my laptop to an external monitor, charger, ethernet, mouse, and robot than plugging 5 cables into it. I just put it down on its little platform and I'm good to go, and when I go home I press a button to release it and it's out.

I use one of these with my X1 carbon...I tried the OneLink dock but I ran into no end of issues.

Thinkpad X230 with Mini Dock (the better version where you could plug in two external monitors and USB 3.0).
Everything is plugged in to a master/slave plug for maximum comfort.
I couldn't be asked to plug all this stuff in when I visit my parents on weekends.
Used docks are dirt cheap too.

X220 with mini dock series 3. I have this issue where it doesn't fit properly when plugged, which is a bit of a pain in the butthole.

I've got one for my Latitude XT2, shit's great
