Unity is GNOME with a bunch of tweaks to disable functions and make it look different. It's basically GNOME bundled with a heavy theme and a lot of shit disabled, and then they pack it with other independent stuff that replaces the disabled features; that way if you try to revert the theme-ing to make it GNOME everything will break. Then they take pride on this and call it a totally-not-GNOME thing.
