Fuck Linux, I'm too deep in to change but holy fuck. A month or two ago my entire OS crashed and I couldn't even load into it, it would just show a blank screen. Tried every terminal command I could and all the settings but I had to reinstall it. Now my dual booted computer has am empty windows file I can't delete and sometimes when I load into Ubuntu everything is all zoomed in. Crashed for no reason.

Not him but the no games argument is not true anymore. Windows is the best os for gaming mostly due to most game developers are trained into developing for it with microsoft's closed APIs, so the simple process of porting a game that was developed for windows to any other platform will affect negatively the performance of the game. This with the fact that the marketshare is small compared to windows there's hardly an incentive at the moment to optimize for linux, making look as if the platform were worse for games than windows when in fact to flip the situation you'll need to change the idiosyncrasies on the industry itself.

The fact though is that the situation on linux is not nearly the same than two years ago and now those who prefer linux over windows now can play games on it, helping to break the vicious circle, but still there's a lot of things to do for linux to compete in the gaming side. I anyone wants for this to change i recommend to play the games you can on linux when possible and ask for linux ports.

I notice some people doesn't want's for this to happen but if that the case let me ask (not directed specifically to the person i'm replying): how are any of you benefited in a meaningful way with the current situation? because i consider that keeping the statu quo just to have a tool to win an argument on what OS is better is not a meaningful thing. how having less options and practically being locked to MS products benefits you?

- Most people uses whatever comes bundled with the hardware and i can bet a lot of them doesn't even know what is an operative system and that you can choose it. If the brand "Windows" were related to quality then WP would be the most used mobile operative system because the demand would be high.
- Microsoft has deals with schools, so people is trained from a young age to use microsoft products. For a lot of them it's a question of being a comfort zone, not even about the difficulty. Their development tools is another good example if a lock-in, they only care about compatibility on markets where they're losing like server or mobile.

One of Linux's greatest downfalls is that it's built by and for technically-minded people who don't mind spending time or learning how to do something. The community and probably a lot of the developers don't care or are just ignorant of the fact that people are specialists and don't have the time, need or desire to learn how to configure and fix their operating system. Also, you could say the same about Windows or macOS as well if you were switching to them without being familiar with it. What you're perceiving as difficulty is in fact learning curve. There are plenty of people who have used macOS for their while lives who feel the same way about Windows as you do about Linux.

My entire secondary machine was literally plug and play on Ubuntu. I did fuck all except installing it. And it took less time than installing and updating Windows 7 which I use on my primary machine.

Even my graphic tablet that has never worked quite right under Windows with official drivers (it's been 5 years since I bought it) works perfectly fine on Ubuntu, and all I did was plug it in.

I love hate threads. The energy is so right.

I started on linux after I installed windows 7 for the third or fourth time. Sometimes in the middle of the install I would have to redo. It was apparently rejecting my hard drive. I needed web access for my email so I just used my old xp machine and made a mint live cd and I was up and running and checking my email and I hadn't even installed it yet.

Fucking hilarious.

I later got bored with mint and I started experimenting with other ubuntu types and settled on lubuntu. I ended up running windows 7 virtually and it installed no problem and ran better than it ran 'on the metal'. I ended up using linux to check my email and then more and more and used windows for a couple of applications I still used.

Get this, when windows 7 was updating and I had to wait to use it, I could still check my email and surf etc. while it was updating. This was very nice.

Then my friend needed windows 7 and I realized I could get by running xp virtually not connected to the web so I gave my win7 away. I liked xp better anyway and it runs way faster on my new machine virtually than it ever did.

Sure there was a learning curve and I ran into less than helpful people but then I found help and figured things out.

My time is valuable but windows has taken a fair amount of my time and I had to pay for it as well. So far it's been about the same.

If you have a girlfriend or wife you may not be able to share your machine if you're using linux since it's not been emasculated in beta testing. Apple is the epitome of this.

The main reason why single guys use linux is not because they are poor or lonely or homely. While these things may be true of linux users it is simply because they own their machine and don't have to share it with a woman that would need to use it.

Windows is the automatic minivan of operating systems.
