# Fun things to do when using GNU/Linux:

* Pretend that the difficulty of use and the incomprehensibility of commands inherent in GNU/Linux is actually a badge of honor.
* Look at ugly, distorted fonts in your browser and on any other application you might want to run
* Reformat and install another distribution. (People have been known to do this continuously for weeks. Hint: they all suck. Stop wasting your time.)
* Watch a console display error messages.
* Convince yourself that LibreOffice is "just as good" as Microsoft Office.
* Read countless manuals to do the simplest of tasks... and still fail.
* Say you use Linux (which will get your ass kicked, even by other GNU/Linux users.)
* Think of ways at work to bring up the subject of how you use GNU/Linux, because the penguin thing didn't work.
* Fail to realize that, penguin or not, noone gives a fuck about what operating system you use.
* Eat KFC chicken around the clock.
* Manually edit config files.
* Run a virtual instance of Windows so you can play games, while at the same time saying how much you hate Microsoft.
* Argue that KDE is better than GNOME.
* Argue that GNOME is better than KDE.
* Argue that both GNOME and KDE are inferior to your chosen environment.
* Develop carpal tunnel from keyboard usage between bouts of excessive self-pleasure borne out of social-retardation.
* Depend on easy to use programs like vi.
* Try to learn how to do simple tasks in vim/emacs, eventually using gedit to complete the same task.
* Keep your virginity.
* Be a badass non-conformist.
* Never get viruses, ever, like how a virgin never gets STDs.
* Graphically chart the shrinkage of your penis over time with bundled, GPL'd software such as GNUPlot. This is a highly requested feature among GNU/Linux users.
* Discussing the awesome non-ntfs filesystems you can use with GNU/Linux, for example one written by a convicted murderer.
* Spend hours of your life compiling bits of code, just to find out it was EPIC FAIL!
>>

There are more than a few similarities between GNU/+Linux and a typical religious cult.

For example:

* Both worship their leader.
* Both have a distended, warped view of their subject matter.
* Both are obsessed with something that most people know nothing about.
* Both believe that they are right and everyone else is wrong.
* Both insist on proselytizing or converting every single person into the fold.
* Both have a warped view of the economy. IOW give everything away for free.
* Both have socialistic tendencies.
* Both seem to attract oddballs, social misfits and the mentally ill.
* Both encourage obsessive behaviour and total devotion to the cause.
* Both disparage and try to discredit the mainstream or competition.
* Both have a militaristic attitude of you are either with us 100 percent or against us.

...and so it goes on.

It sure seems like GNU/+Linux is a cult.

GNU/Linux are cults for the mentally weak. Consider the similarity between Linux and religion:

A common remark among GNU/Linux users when somebody complains about open source is that we must read about open source until we “get it.” This is similar to the religions in which a person becomes born-again, or discovers Jesus Christ. Religious people cannot explain the process of being born again or discovering Jesus. Rather, we must simply “get it.”

The Linux people ask for donations, as do churches.

Linux fanatics routinely publish “feel-good” articles about how wonderful Linux and open source is. They never discuss issues seriously, nor do they tolerate criticism. Churches also routinely bombard their congregation with biased sermons. The sermons never discuss issues seriously, nor do churches tolerate criticism.

Religions have a god, and the worshippers often have symbolic items that they wear as jewellery or collect in their homes. For example, the Christians collect crosses and images of Jesus. Many Linux people treat Torvalds and Stallman as gods, and the penguin seems analogous to a statue of Jesus.

To some Linux users the penguin may be nothing more than a corporate logo. However, compare Linux to other software applications. Are you aware of any other software in which the users or the developers have such an attraction to the software or its logo? And if you can find such a product, do you consider those people to be mentally “healthy”?

Some Macintosh users are described as having an extreme attraction to the Macintosh, but even they do not seem to have the same level of attraction to the Apple logo or to Steve Jobs as the Linux people do to the Linux penguin and Torvalds. Steve Jobs was even tossed out of the Apple for a while; ie, he was treated as just another human being. Would Linux people consider dumping Torvalds and getting a different leader?

It's funny what the guy implies for linux users when microsoft is the one who actually instructs their employees the way you're describing here:
-For them "evangelism is war"
-MS is the one who has something akin to indoctrination: is teach at schools to people when is young.
-MS doesn't tolerate the existence of competing technologies, for them the only true victory is when the competitor closes their business.
-MS actually encourages their employees to spread FUD.
-MS actually pays people to manipulate opinions and shut up criticism and buys positive reviews on media.

See: http://techrights.org/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/comes-3096.pdf
There's a lot of funny things to quote.

I wonder what would happen to Linux adoption if some enormous company pointed thousands of highly skilled devs and money to making a distribution that rivals Windows.

Like what if IBM decided to make a "for everyone" distribution based on Debian or something that was absolutely bulletproof in terms of drivers, stability and performance, also letting their devs reach out to others to help them with their code and getting their programs to run on this distribution (especially programs that only run on Windows) while at the same time making the installation as easy as .exes.

Hell they could even charge a license fee if it gets good enough.

It's Linux's fault because it is a niche product and doesn't have widespread hardware support because it is so niche. On Windows, you can blame the hardware maker for not supporting Windows properly because Windows is the industry standard, but you can also blame Microsoft if it is a problem with Windows.

Also, that statement isn't true. Macs are expensive, but they're not unobtainable.

If you can't understand the benefits or the use case of a Linux-based OS, you're stupid, hands down.

Second pasta:
Not him but the no games argument is not true anymore. Windows is the best os for gaming mostly due to most game developers are trained into developing for it with microsoft's closed APIs, so the simple process of porting a game that was developed for windows to any other platform will affect negatively the performance of the game. This with the fact that the marketshare is small compared to windows there's hardly an incentive at the moment to optimize for linux, making look as if the platform were worse for games than windows when in fact to flip the situation you'll need to change the idiosyncrasies on the industry itself.

The fact though is that the situation on linux is not nearly the same than two years ago and now those who prefer linux over windows now can play games on it, helping to break the vicious circle, but still there's a lot of things to do for linux to compete in the gaming side. I anyone wants for this to change i recommend to play the games you can on linux when possible and ask for linux ports.

I notice some people doesn't want's for this to happen but if that the case let me ask (not directed specifically to the person i'm replying): how are any of you benefited in a meaningful way with the current situation? because i consider that keeping the statu quo just to have a tool to win an argument on what OS is better is not a meaningful thing. how having less options and practically being locked to MS products benefits you?

Windows is like a plastic butter knife and Linux is like steel kitchen knife. With windows kids feel always safe to use and have fun with it playing to be chefs, doing things like cutting tomatoes or maybe onions, even if they do it in a slow or clumsy way, but meanwhile they feel happy and satisfied with themselves. Then when they see you cooking with the steel knife they starts wondering how it feels, then they starts whining that they want to cook like you and want to use the steel knife instead the small plastic one. You say that you cannot do that because you're busy but you'll teach him later. The kid gets angry and start whining more that he want the knife now and don't want the plastic one anymore, you tell him that to use the knife he must practice and be patient, meanwhile he should start with a smaller one. The kid gets more angry and tell you that he don't need your ugly and stupid knife because the yellow plastic one is more cool, and more safe, and he can do the same things, and that this one is not allowed for adults to use. Then you laugh in a light way like thinking 'that's cute' and you just say ok.
>>
>>59418329
It was some Asus WiFi card. Not anything special.
>>
>>59418393
Later in the night when you're sleeping, the kid takes the steel knife and starts playing with it. He feels very exited, this one is heavier, shiny, it cuts things very easily, now he feels like a professional. Then he try to cut harder things, or trying to cut the vegetables in small cubes. During his play he mistakenly cuts his finger and starts crying very loud. You wake up and hurry up to see whats happening and you cure his finger with a bandage and cleaning the injure. The kid starts blaming you saying that this is because you didn't lend him the knife when he asked, that you never have time for him, that your shitty knife is dangerous and you're a retard for using it, that he didn't need anyway, that was your fault for always treating him like a kid. The only thing you do then is hug him and say, 'ok but promise me that you'll not try to use the knife again until being more grown', the kid just nods with his head while a tear walks over his face.

Ok, i never said it works better for you. It may not be obvious but i cannot control other people's mind and change your bad experiences into good ones. Still, why do you seem to dislike linux that much? someone is trying to force you to use it? do you want to feel validated into feeling that you made the correct OS choice and looking at people talking positively and recommending linux makes you feel insecure? No one said something about being an special snowflake, are you projecting?

Obviously google has the data i willingly give to them but i don't give them all my data, that's why i judge each piece of software on it's own and i check that's software provider's record on how they treat their users. I have seen a lot of windows users defending windows blaming the user. You're being too much intellectually dishonest. Second i don't see any point on hating a piece of technology based on their users, i don't give a fat shit about what any other person uses or what are they criteria, in any case check how the developers and the people in charge treats their users and also check the product by it's merits.

True but consider the following:
- Microsoft has deals with hardware companies, so most laptop and desktop computers comes bundled with their products.
- Most people uses whatever comes bundled with the hardware and i can bet a lot of them doesn't even know what is an operative system and that you can choose it. If the brand "Windows" were related to quality then WP would be the most used mobile operative system because the demand would be high.
- Microsoft has deals with schools, so people is trained from a young age to use microsoft products. For a lot of them it's a question of being a comfort zone, not even about the difficulty. I can say this because in my own experience most windows users never solve their own problems, they ask other people to solve their problems.
- Microsoft has a huge lock-in with their formats and APIs. Independently on if we can consider they products are good or bad, the fact is that they use anti-competitive measures to lock their users and developers. For example their document formats doesn't honors the "ISO standard" they supposedly issued. If they care about interoperability with competing solutions they would use the well documented version of their format. But no, they uses their dominant position to push a version of the format only they know exactly how it works (interestingly and despite this, i have gotten problems even with different versions of MSO). Most of the documents in this format are created with MSO and most people doesn't even knows about the strict version of the format, this makes their format a moving target for competitors at best. Their development tools is another good example if a lock-in, they only care about compatibility on markets where they're losing like server or mobile.

One of Linux's greatest downfalls is that it's built by and for technically-minded people who don't mind spending time or learning how to do something. The community and probably a lot of the developers don't care or are just ignorant of the fact that people are specialists and don't have the time, need or desire to learn how to configure and fix their operating system. Your Doctor, Lawyer, accountant don't give a shit, their computer is a tool that just has to work. Claiming their use case is illegitimate or that the user is stupid is just pure ignorance that holds back Linux adoption. Those professionals time is much more valuable than the time needed to get Linux working for their use case.

I don't mind the Linux Users that are open about their Sekrit Klub being some dick measuring contest. The real dumb ones are the ones that complain about Linux adoption being shit then cry foul when people come to them with legitimate issues screaming "no ur just 2 dUmb!!1!"

I love how when confronted with the technical flaws of Linux, freetards always fall back on moral arguments, like Apple and Microsoft are evil Jews/Pajeets (and somehow anti semitism/racism aren't immoral??).

They're like libertarians, when you point out that the free market™ can't accomplish something, they often resort to a moral argument to deflect from the shortcomings of their ideology (IE: you're literally putting a gun to my head when x law is passed).

I beg to disagree, in fact i have been able to run full sessions on mast hardware i have tried without even touching the hard drive, windows shits itself if you don't hunt the drivers by yourself and windows update has fucked working computers where i work by automatically installing the driver microsoft wants.

>Most printers don't support Linux.
I beg to disagree. Define "most" in the first place. Most printer i have tried either doesn't need extra config after i plug them or have drivers available without much problem. On windows you often need to download extremely bloated "drivers suites" to make the printer work properly with installers that goes from 50 to 250 MB commonly. On linux it "just werks" as you people like to say.

>Most Linux distros don't even have an app store with apps that people actually use, something normies need in 2017.
Windows for example comes with an store that most people don't even touch. But now seriously, package managers is a blessing for the average joe, i don't get why microsoft doesn't provides an store with useful software and they insted prefer to push an artificially created market.

>No, it is a valid reason. Casual users only want to use respected brands, not some no name program.
Of course what is marketed more will get more popular. Just look at chrome, it practically was bundle with every installer for some years and now it's the most popular browser. Of course i don't think that popularity implies quality on my own experience but whatever float your boat (not saying you implied popularity = quality).

>I've had multiple laptops where all the hardware didn't work on Ubuntu, and my desktops wifi card isn't supported by Linux either.

>I'm just defending those people who do use Windows because they are rational human being acting in their own best interests when they use Windows or god forbid, Mac.
Well, ok, i guess you'll receive a lot of good karma from them then, thumbs up.

You should use whatever you feel comfortable with and make productive Windows threads, just as aggressive Linux posters should make productive threads.

Not really.

I have no idea what you're getting at but I hate the /r/PCmasterrace types too and I actually do call them out on /v/.

>Well, ok, i guess you'll receive a lot of good karma from them then, thumbs up.
And you'll receive bad karma for all the anti semtism, racism against Indians, and elitism against "normies" if you're anything like the other Linux users.

>The people on /g/ who keep insulting Windows users.
And who defends us from people like you?

>Why is it when Linux users insult and belittle Windows users all day long, none of you speak up
Because both sides has trolls, you're defending people who doesn't deserve to be defended and i would be doing it too if i do it. You're taking all this too seriously. I'm having fun but i'm starting to feel a bit uncomfy thinking that maybe you're actually not baiting.

>but when someone says something about Linux, you get extremely defensive?
A lot of people see this as a tribal war, also i don't represent anyone why do you include me with everyone?

>Your community wouldn't be so toxic if you just occasionally called each other out on the elitism and toxicity.
Ahm, well, you know, i'm not omnipresent or i can control my peers, also i already explained i don't think any side deserve to be seriously defended even if i like to mess with them sometimes.

I'm getting to the conclusion you may actually need help because i'm starting to think your perception of reality is pretty distorted. Anyway i hope i'm actually wrong 10/10 bait, you actually made me to start worrying for you. Now i'm gonna quit because if you're actually being serious me mocking you is not a good thing, but take my advice and seek other kind of communities if you may not fit in this one. Cheers.

>And who defends us from people like you?
A small army of circle jerkers.

>you're defending people who doesn't deserve to be defended
My grandma doesn't deserve to be defended for using a Mac? My dad doesn't deserve to be defended because he uses a Windows PC for work? This is who I'm defending, regular people who Linux users call low IQ subhumans because they don't have the time to learn your special snowlfake OS.

>i don't represent anyone why do you include me with everyone?
Because after being called Pajeet for the thirty trillionth time, I've had enough. Maybe if Linux users didn't lump together 99% of the world's population with India, I wouldn't lump you in with the extremely toxic FOSS community.

I am half trolling. I really am sick and tired of being called Pajeet so often, but I'm not this dramatic IRL. I just dismiss freetards like I do vegans, since those two groups are so similar.

I seriously hope what you're saying is true because reading your posts was just painful and even now i'm actually doubting about you half trolling. In that case you're a great troll my friend, a true manipulative attention whore. I don't represent anyone but i consider you didn't managed to make anyone to change their opinion on what OS they should prefer because you barely provided any reasoning regarding anything related to technology and you also didn't managed to make anyone to feel any guilty for trolling the users of any OS, but at least i'm pretty sure you managed to make some people think you've actually some serious issues thanks to your hypocrite, maniputative, white-knighty and full of self-victimization discourse. Congratulations for that my friend.

I'd be more worried about the freetards that spend all day on /g/ calling everyone a Pajeet, a cuck, a shill, a numale, etc etc than I would be worried about me. Their behavior of obsessing over their world view and defending it from the "normies" by calling them all cucks/shills/Pajeets/numales/etc etc is far less healthy than me wasting some freetards time (because freetards have a lot of free time, since Linux is only free if your time has no value).

I use linux precisely because my time *is* valuable. $35AUD/hr valuable even.

I need a server set up exactly the way I want with minimal fuss, and it should never change or break unexpected, because I do it tens of times every single day. With windows this is simply unrealistic.

WAIK is shit, BAT script and powershell are horrid, and Windows is the exact opposite of deterministic.

That's precisely what a VM is for.

There's no reason to dual boot.

I have yet to hear an argument as to why Linux isn't a VM bound nodejs-kiddie.

>Linux Is Only Free If Your Time Has No Value

Nobody said it was free, at least nobody who you should have taken advice from. Also, you could say the same about Windows or macOS as well if you were switching to them without being familiar with it. What you're perceiving as difficulty is in fact learning curve. There are plenty of people who have used macOS for their while lives who feel the same way about Windows as you do about Linux.

No operating system is inherently difficult.

My entire secondary machine was literally plug and play on Ubuntu. I did fuck all except installing it. And it took less time than installing and updating Windows 7 which I use on my primary machine.

Even my graphic tablet that has never worked quite right under Windows with official drivers (it's been 5 years since I bought it) works perfectly fine on Ubuntu, and all I did was plug it in.

Nice shitpost.

I love hate threads. The energy is so right.

I started on linux after I installed windows 7 for the third or fourth time. Sometimes in the middle of the install I would have to redo. It was apparently rejecting my hard drive. I needed web access for my email so I just used my old xp machine and made a mint live cd and I was up and running and checking my email and I hadn't even installed it yet.

Fucking hilarious.

I later got bored with mint and I started experimenting with other ubuntu types and settled on lubuntu. I ended up running windows 7 virtually and it installed no problem and ran better than it ran 'on the metal'. I ended up using linux to check my email and then more and more and used windows for a couple of applications I still used.

Get this, when windows 7 was updating and I had to wait to use it, I could still check my email and surf etc. while it was updating. This was very nice.

Then my friend needed windows 7 and I realized I could get by running xp virtually not connected to the web so I gave my win7 away. I liked xp better anyway and it runs way faster on my new machine virtually than it ever did.

Sure there was a learning curve and I ran into less than helpful people but then I found help and figured things out.

My time is valuable but windows has taken a fair amount of my time and I had to pay for it as well. So far it's been about the same.

If you have a girlfriend or wife you may not be able to share your machine if you're using linux since it's not been emasculated in beta testing. Apple is the epitome of this.

The main reason why single guys use linux is not because they are poor or lonely or homely. While these things may be true of linux users it is simply because they own their machine and don't have to share it with a woman that would need to use it.

Windows is the automatic minivan of operating systems.
