Used to work for Google Fiber. Ask me anything

botnet
>>
>>59411172
Is it botnet? and if so is it more or less botnet than a normal ISP like Comcast or AT&T?
>>
Does Google Fiber have Dynamic IP functionality, if not does Static IP count as a mark of the beast?
>>
why did you work for a botnet?

Should I buy a Thinkpad T420?
>>
>>59411206
It's as much as a botnet as any other ISP, I'm assuming. I worked in a fairly low level position, but I could see a lot of customer data (for troubleshooting purposes), and I'm sure our upper level TCS (who actually handle the backend) guys could see a shit more than I could.

>>59411227
>$$$

>>59411252
i sat at a computer, answered phone calls and emails, opened and closed tickets. Bullshit CSR stuff. I should mention that I never directly worked for Google, this was a contracted position as most things are for the company. But I had official Google credentials, logged onto their network and had access to most of the tools official Googlers use.
>>
>>59411172
does every gateway perform deep packet inspection and/or sell your info to the highest bidder?
>>
>>59411172
>>59411278
How did you get that position even if it was contracted?
>>
>>59411245
no. GF isn't expanding at the moment

>>59411284
If Google was gonna use deep packet inspection to snoop on you they wouldn't do it at the gateway level.

Question: how to get hired at Google if you have self studied CS/math textbooks but you don't have a degree?

>>59411304
Build a portfolio
>>
>>59411309
Do you have any recommendations/pointers on what to try and add to a portfolio?
>>
>>59411299
I was approached by a recruiter.

>>59411304
get a degree. Unless you have 5-10+ years of experience under your belt, 9 times out of 10 ANY company will rather hire someone with a degree than someone without.
>>
>>59411304
Find someone to refer you.
>>
I noted that you used to work for, but before you stop did you get a hold of any info whether they're going to continue their expansion??
>>
>>59411172

Why are you doing AMA BS on 4chan, that's meant for plebbit, newfag

Indirect advertising even off the job?
>>
>>59411338
Nope. Right now they're experimenting with bringing fiber to buildings wirelessly (not Webpass); a few buildings in Georgia already has this. It's still a pilot program and I'm assuming that once they have this method of deployment down they'll start expanding again.
>>
>>59411329
Is bachelors degree enough? I'm at a crossover where I got my bachelors degree last year, am still enrolled in college, but thought it was better to find a job after getting my degree, so I did.

I'm still not sure about it.
>>
>>59411351
using plebbit would cause him to possibly reveal his identity when he might technically be under an NDA
>>
>>59411358
As in, just building the fiber line to a transmission tower and having a giant wireless coverage area like 4G?
Or is it some new shit that we haven't heard of yet?
>>
>>59411358
Thats what I feared. I live in the ATL area and was hopeful, until they got hit by all that blackballing shit.

Man, fuck AT&T and Comcast

>>59411358

No. We all know that there are many numerous reasons why university is bullshit.
>>59411335
I thought about trying this route, something like go to tech community meetups and schmooze talk with people. but I figured it would take a lot more to earn their trust for them to stick their neck out and refer someone?
>>59411309
I'd like to hear more ideas in regards to this question >>59411325
I was thinking about putting hobby projects on github, standard CS projects like a toy operating system, toy database, etc. but I figured they would be like oh meh this just looks like CS homework and want to see something more substantial.
>>
>>59411386
essentially the former. Everything but the last mile will be fiber , after that it's transmitted wirelessly.
>>
>>59411433
Any actual loss of speed from the wireless transmission?
>>
>>59411406
>>59411386
Googly Fiber got blackballed by other major ISPs citing some old ass fucking law regarding laying network lines and shit. So now, they're experimenting with Wifi broadband instead.
>>
>>59411426
>No. We all know that there are many numerous reasons why university is bullshit.

I'd love to be in the room when you try explaining to HR during your interview why university is bullshit.
>>
>>59411453
Don't actually go full autist and explain why uni is bullshit
If they asked why you don't have a degree just say financial reasons
>>
>>59411445
The only issues that I've seen reported by customers apart of this program is that the TV service would cut in and out multiple times throughout the day. Other than that it doesn't appear so. It's still in beta so I'm sure it's not as fast as 100% fiber, but optimizations could get it close to that number.
>>
>>59411271
yes
>>
>>59411284
>sell your info to the highest bidder
Google has an advertising business that depends on their unique profile of you.

Why would they sell that information?
>>
>>59411465
So if we don't use the TV service we should be fine?
Does it work by just having a router pick up the signal and function like a normal router?

Something like this. It would be pointless, useless, and autistic to reveal your powerlevel to the HR drones.

I know Google has some experimental licenses but no bandwidth (spectrum) like 70-80

Is Google fiber just another way for Google to spy on people, by monitoring its customers internet traffic? Do they do it for the NSA/CIA/FBI? Is Google part of the 'Deep State'?
>>
>>59411482
right now the pilot is only open to multi-tenant buildings, not single unit homes. Most likely it will be done via wireless transmission by the NIU.

You see that rating? 2.5 stars...

does it tell you anything?

a t&t was offering me a 100MBPs plan but the max i could get was 18 according to their website.

I'm not paying for 100 and getting 18, fuck that.
