Didn't really have a specific use case, C had established itself as the standard systems and general purpose imperative language by that point, and from what I've heard Pascal was poorly standardized at least back in the day.

C had a tighter syntax according to unix jockeys of the era. Between Pascal and C, the 80's codemonkey chose C when they had the choice.

Pascal itself wound up reborn as Delphi.
