Looking to buy new headphones.

Budget: $100-200AUD
Location: Australia
Source: Computer/Android phone
Type: Full-size, pref. over ear
Open/closed: Closed, I like my isolation
Comfort level: Willing to sacrifice sound quality for comfort
Soundsig: Bassy or V-shaped, but this isn't a priority
Past headphones; I usually just borrow my dad's set, he has a Bose pair which are super comfy, but I don't know the model.

Other: Pref. durability as a priority. Option to attach some kind of headset mic would be nice too, but not essential (I'm also in the market for a cheap mic).

Looks like this
>>
>>59409891
Yeah, you can.

When you have an amp with a volume knob, however, it is recommended to use it and leave windows master volume at 100%.

The reason is that there's quality loss with windows approach (software) to volume. Even if there wasn't, doing volume at the DAC isn't as ideal as doing it in the AMP.

But this is all theory territory. In practice, chances are, all approaches will sound fine to you ;).

you should never control volume with software if you have an AMP/DAC. you should set it to 100% on your OS side and then just use AMP/DAC to actually set volume you want.
>>
>>59410026
Hand wash, with soap. They're probably fine if you toss them in with your laundry too.

For velour pads, it ruins how they have a consistent direction on the fabric but the comfort isn't affected.

In the manual/booklet it doesn't say that at all!

Schiit modi+magni is pretty much the top end. Past that, it's audiophile hell.

>>

I fucking dare you to test that stack against a $60 E10k. You will NOT be able to tell the difference. When people started doing DBTs on Head-Fi and exposing bullshit, admins completely banned discussions about these topics because it hurt their advertisers (Schiit, Chord etc).
>>
>>59410526
>>59410537
Half the reason it's appealing to me is because I have the Modi/Magni 2 (non-uber) so if I ever bought any speakers I would have to get something with more outputs
>>
>>59410549
dac vs dac? Probably.

amp vs amp? No. The e10k is spec'd pretty low.

>HD800S

Generally you'd want 115dB+ to be safe (nwavguy dixit)
Magni 120dB:
https://www.audiobot9000.com/match/sennheiser/hd-800-s/with/schiit/magni-2

e10k 110 dB (assumed from 32Ω, HP is 300Ω... good luck):
https://www.audiobot9000.com/match/sennheiser/hd-800-s/with/fiio/e10k

Note e10k has no line in, so for budget I'd recommend schiit fulla2 anyway.

My setup (headphones, waifu... yeah that's my desk): >>59409449
>>
>>59410567
That's how I got the uber versions.

Modi2 Uber has 3 inputs:
USB -> free!
spdif coax -> motherboard spdif output
spdif optical -> ps3

And Magni2 Uber has a nice speaker output... which I'm not using, but plan on getting some decent desktop speakers to go with it.

Is that really true?
I heard for some cans like the Fostex T50rp, the e10k doesn't get that loud.

Also, can anyone with an e10k comment on sound at high gain, high volume?

>>59410647

>>
>>59410653

Not true at all. I've driven pretty much every can I've tried and they worked fine. Even Beyerdynamic T90, which is hard to drive, works fine off a cheaper dac/amp.
>>
>>59410692
>You're that Fulla2 shill. Will not argue with shills.

I'm not a shill. I actually paid for my shit. And you should really get a fulla2, they're great nifty little devices.

My desk >>59409449

Umi deserves no less than schiit stack + HD600.
>>
>>59410657
>Also, can anyone with an e10k comment on sound at high gain, high volume?

e10k sounds good as long as you don't exceed its amp specs.

Would actually be a decent recommendation (not bad for chink!) if it had a line-in. Alas, it forces the use of its DAC.

>Balanced is a meme.

Only if you're half-deaf and listening to mp3 at 190 kbps. If you actually get a hi-res source, the difference is impressive. Balanced was designed for noise cancelling in professional audio chains, and because there's "two" amplifiers in each channel (hot and cold) you get an automatic 6dB S/N improvement over single-ended.

Go ahead, step up your game and try hi-res media, the cost is worth it (most of the time).

What are ''ear speakers''?
>>
>>59421266
You kidding right?
>>
>>59422765
STAX, the manufacturer of the headphones in that pic, refers to their headphones as ear speakers.

Some other manufacturers do this as well, such as AKG and their long discontinued K1000, which imo would be more fitting of 'ear speakers' than STAX.
>>
>>59422820
Any difference from a normal headphone? Is the term ear speaker just a marketing trick?
>>
>>59422846
More of a marketing trick/buzzword, STAX ear speakers are electrostatic headphones. Though the AKG K1000 is a lot different, search them up on Google, and you'll see what I mean.

Got the KZ ZS3's.
I'm satisfied with the sound for the price, but the fit is not comfortable at all for me, and I don't like the over ear cables, so I figure I'll have to step up in price point to find what I'm looking for.

Currently looking at the Xaomi Hybrids, Soundmagic E10, Vsonic GR02 Bass edition, and Carbo Tenore.
What's the best option out of these or others available?
>>
I cannot make up my mind. Opinions and insults requested on the following headphones

AKG K712
DT990
Fidelio X2

I prefer a V shaped sound sig. Will be using for dedicated computer use (50% music, 50% media). Yes I have a dac/amp (Schiit stack).
>>
>>59423004
Probably the X2.

The 712 is a fucking mess, the frequency graphs show different peaks on the treble compared to other graphs then there's that peak around 13KHz that none of them show. Then there's the fact that its mids and low mids are really thick and kinda fatigating. Lastly, they really aren't very V shaped even though their bass is actually amazing in my opinion in the sense that it's fast, punchy and very extended

The DT990 is just too agressive. That treble peak around 9KHz is fucking insane
>>
>>59423004
How v-shaped are we talking about here?

If you like treble the DT990 is certainly the choice here as it's the only true V-shape option.

X2 is like half-retarded V-shape response with it's narrow treble peak.

I had a pair of dt990 in the past and had to sell them. After far too long trying to find something I would consider an upgrade at a similar price, I gave up. i feel like this is a pretty good deal. Worried the 990's might be fake but whatever ebay will literally suck a buyer's dick.
I wanted something I could use with my phone and say the dragonfly for 60 and jumped on it with out any research or anything.
I Can finally put these Hyper X's to rest at home. Good headphones for $60, I got a year out of them and they're still in mint condition. I'll probably keep them.
I'm excited for muh sparkly treble again. Been too long.

Roadworks expected on my street for the next few weeks, considering grabbing the HD569 to help block out the noise. Are they any good?

I know "Gayman headsets" are kinda frowned upon, but I do need a wireless headset since I do exactly two things in my worthless fucking NEET life: Play gaems and walk around my apartment/basement. and while good headphones + standalone speaker would objectively produce the best sound at probably the cheapest(ish) price, I need to make some shitty shitty compromises here.
Are there any (preferably closed, it's loud here) wireless headsets that are /g/ recommended? Also preferably a bit sturdy since I'm a worthless NEET and the thing is gonna be in use at least 15 hours every day, non stop

So far I had a Logitech G930 which was an absolute PoS that I wouldn't recommend to anyone without feeling extremely guilty. It has one of those shitty fucking "surround sound" gimmicks, which I tried in Rainbow Six Siege, (game that actually emulates some sound propagation) and it actually made it harder to hear where people come from, what a fucking joke. Luckily turning that off made the headset overpriced but servicable.

tl;dr Need wireless non-shit headset that can withstand heavy use. Audio Quality > Mic Quality.
>>
>>59426619
Just buy some in-ears, why spend that much just for roadworks when in-ears will isolate more and you can set some for $10
>>
>>59426677

You can probably grab Somic MM185's with an Mpow bluetooth 3.5mm reciever and a bluetooth USB dongle for your PC with a desk mic. If you can't spend that much on headphones, look at Monoprice 8323's or Superlux HD 669's with new pads like HM5's.

>>59426869
So that's basically the "headphones + standalone mic" option again? I was kinda hoping to have it in one, since like I said, I do some walking around while skyping and such. But thank you for the recommendation.

>>59426879
Well I'm not an absolute audiophile, I just need something that is good enough for gaming so that I can hear where sound is coming from, and doesn't go "kkrrcchhhh" when shits going down. I'm not in the habit of listening to the finest .flacs (although I do have a few)
>>
>>59427011
If youre still stuck on 'muh wireless gaymer', there's the Corsair Void Wireless.
>>
>>59427047
Well, it's less that I want the gaymer shit, it's really the list of shit I need from my Headphones / Mic combo:
>Needs to work decently with video games, since that is my main hobby (most headphones will do this)
>should allow me to walk around, so I can do shit like Skype from my bed / kitchen
>must be somewhat sturdy because I literally use it every day from the moment I wake up to when I go to sleep
Don't need that 7.1 Bullshit, since it doesn't really help with gaming anyway (from what I can tell anyway).

It's not that I WANT the shitty gaymen headset, it's just pretty much the only option that I can use all day without taking it off each time I go AFK, or strangulate myself with cable extensions when I skype / listen to music from my bed and that leaves me with shitty retarded overpriced gayming headsets. That's kinda why I hoped /g/ would know a really decent wireless Stereo Headset that is worth it's money, because when I google for decent headsets I get shit reviews that list "RGB LEDs" as a fucking plus point for fucks sake, because god damn normies get a hardon for that shit.

The HD800S is a big price bump for a black HD800 and balanced cable. The Zensor directivity is subpar, as expected of the baffle. Jotunheim isn't really bad, but we can likely find something more suited for what you want.
The question is, what are you looking for?

Not that it really matters. There are almost always more important things that worrying about lossy coding.

The question is posed not just to pick the headphone, but how to allocate your money between speakers and headphones. Which would you use more often, how would you go about using it and so on.

Massdrop paid Sennheiser for that drop. It was their marketing strategy to get tons of new signups. Massdrop already made all that money back from selling tons of products are near-full price to all these new subscribers.

Also, these HD6XX products are problematic. They use seconds drivers and also shittier plastic. That's why they're not doing well in resale market. I'd stay away from those. Also, HD6xx are closer to HD650 than to HD600.

Thank you /hpg/.

You told me about the Massdrop HD650s.

You told me a FiiO e10k is enough.

Now I'm listening to Debussy and Beethoven and feel these headphones are really shining. Also, I smoked weed for the first time in a long while and I am having a blast.

I have /ptg/ to thank for the flacs.

I just picked up some Senheisser HD 598cs a couple days ago. I really like it, but I noticed in some metal tracks, there's something "missing", like the lead guitars and some of the drummer's cymbal hits aren't as impactful. Is this what they mean by recessed treble? Is this something I can fix in EQ? I really like the sound otherwise.

Depends on the application. Generally yes.
>>
>>59435400
really depends on your specific motherboard. Some of the realtek chips actually are pretty alright. I have ALC1150 in my computer and I've never really felt the need for a sound card. But if you got some $70 asrock shit or a cheap laptop, then perhaps it will be warranted. If I felt the need to upgrade my sound source, I would probably just get a Dac/ Amp instead.

Taking a wild guess they are the passive version then as Dali mostly manufactures those and the price seems low for AX.

>I'm clueless about speakers
Seems so. I'd hold on to purchasing anything that expensive unless you just want to burn money. Research and understand what you want first. Auditioning can help, ordering from places with a solid return policy isn't a bad idea.
>>
>>59423004
>K712
Thick sound, broadly forward lower midrange/upper bass. Overall slightly warm and colored. Comfortable and consistent headphone. Insensitive but that's a non issue for you with the Schiit stack.

>DT990
V-shape with treble emphasis and a lot of it. Boost in the midbass making it a little boomy. Comfortable and consistent, multiple options to choose from(impedance and pro vs premium).

>X2
Bassy and somewhat boomy. Bass boost lower than in the DT990. Overall warm although the treble peak does make it a bit more balanced than being entirely warm. Comfortable, good build quality and sensitive enough for mobile devices.

Question is, what do you want? Why are these your only options?

Not really. They're excellent, however they lack the power to drive some headphones. Most only offer a 3.5mm jack too. Having your headphone wires go to the back of the PC can be inconvenient also.

Personally, I just use an external dac/amp. There isn't much point in a sound card in modern PCs unless you want something to drive all headphones and you don't want an external dac/amp. Or you just want to blow money because you think it looks cool in the case.

This is ignoring the problem that come with wanting to use the front headphone jack of a pc.

Yes, and yes, even just the open backed nature of the HD 558 and the material of the earpads will make a good difference in sound compared to those

You can also do the foam mod for them to make them sound even better, I've heard people say it makes them sound the equivalent of the HD 598 after doing it properly

Don't know if you mean the whole headphone itself is falling appart, or just the earpads. If just the ear pads, they're probably replaceable, and you may be able to replace them with something like the Brainwavz HM5 velour pads, or something similar.

Next time learn the basics of lossy encoding before commenting.

320kbps whatever codec on whatever settings on whatever sample can be differentiated from lossless.

Just like 128kbps whatever necessarily can't.
>>
>>59438673
>>59438673
Why would you assume you can? Why is your goal to spot something audibly wrong in a lossy encode? Why do you think that matters? Why why why? Where does this idea that with better gear you will suddenly turn into a golden ear come from? Or that there is no purpose to higher quality gear because you can't hear the difference between something lossy and lossless? Don't you realize how fundamentally different issues these are in terms of audio quality to the problems your gear or ears have? If you haven't got a clue, why do you assume something?

WHY

Yeah, 6XX are really shitty. shitty sub-par drivers, shitty cables, shitty plastic. That's why they were $199. Better to sell those drivers that didn't pass quality control than to shred them and waste hundreds of thousands of dollars and man hours that went into manufacturing them.

Intel does the exact same thing. When intel fabs chips, they bin them.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Product_binning

Just like not every Intel chip is great, so is not every driver that comes off Sennheiser production line. Good shit ends up in expensive cans, shitty ones end up in a garbage dump or in XX series of cans.

the biggest reason why you shouldn't is because you stop enjoying the music.

if you can tell the difference between a decent mp3 as opposed to a shitty rip posted on youtube, that's about as far as you want to go. everything else is meaningless, especially in an increasingly wireless world where the quality is going to suck anyways.
>>
>>59440476
They toss drivers that do not meet spec and match ones that measure similarly, there's no such thing as 'binning' in a headphone. You don't have faster and slower

>>59440562
You're an idiot. Why do you think Sennheiser has so many headphoens that look alike, have similar numbers and share same drivers?

Making drivers is extremely expensive and shit goes wrong often. They simply bin the drivers so they don't have to trash them.

HD6XX are nothing more than lowe quality binned HD650 drivers.
