IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

I don't really see any good reason to get one, the only advantage they have over a reasonably specced x220 is that it's thinner. Maybe it'd make sense if you got it cheap, but on the rare occasion I see one on ebay they're overpriced.

Unless you want to use CUDA or something, you're better off either living with the HD4000, getting a W series, or getting a laptop that's actually meant for gaymen.
>>
That sucks. I had the t420 in mind. If I get one with an Nvidia card, and disable it in the BIOS, will everything else (like the video ports) still work? Will it have the same battery as one without the Nvidia card?

I don't have one but I'm pretty sure it'll be fine if you disable it. The dGPU on the T420 should be a fair bit better than the iGPU anyway, it's just that a T430 iGPU would be better than both, and probably around the same price. If the T420 with Nvidia is cheap though then don't let the GPU put you off.

My t420 makes a shutter sound randomly.

It's not the same as the screenshot shutter, it's more muffled and maybe a bit shorter.

It seems to originate from underneath the area where you'd rest your left wrist when typing... near the little stickers.

I bought the t420 used of course and there was a little bit of play or looseness in that area when it was delivered.
It's not anything too bad but if you tap it lightly with a finger, plastic clicks against plastic... whereas the corresponding area on the other side does not click.

The random shutter sound is mildly annoying and not really good for my paranoia.
What am I hearing?

also... i've searched the internet and found nothing helpful
i don't have skype installed (some people have had issues with that making noise in the background) and it happens randomly no matter what i have running

pretty normal in the left area after it's been disassembled a few times.

probably the hard drive parking its head.

use this https://sites.google.com/site/quiethdd/

right now I only use ssd's in my laptops but before that I've use this for years to stop the hard drive clicking noise from happening, with zero side effects.

Please help me /g/ays, are there any internal differences between T430 and T430i? I think the chipset is the same QM77. Some people say there are worse capacitors in the T430i, some say there's no difference at all. I'm asking because I can get a T430i with 1600x900 screen and i3 3120M much cheaper than a T430 with 1366x768 and i5 3320M, and I'm planning to upgrade to an i7 anyway.

Is the only reason the x220 is recommended instead of the x230, the keyboard?

I have shells of both that I got for more or less the same price and the x230 is slightly lighter with better specs. Seems like a keyboard swap would give me the best of both worlds. Just wish it had an IPS display, though I can see some on aliexpress for $60. Those are legit right?

>>
>>59413133
It's mostly the keyboard, yes, but that can be fixed. Another thing is probably that it's not worth the minor upgrade in specs for the money, if you want to go cheap that is.

The IPS is probably legit, but might have problems with burn-in

Some issues I've had with mine
>subframe around the hinge broke and to be araldited in place
>hinges are kind of loose

>256MB of graphics memory is a fucking joke and combined with the lack of graphics switching it means you'll struggle to make use of the GPU but it'll still be shitting on your battery life no matter what
If you get one with a dGPU, check that you can turn it off in the bios or that it's 512MB, else you'll be stuck with overheating and shit battery life.
>Overheats to 100C under load and has to throttle where later generations will usually sit at 70C with an equivalent mid-tier i5.
>Overheats just browsing the net if you try and use a dock with it
>1440x900 screen has absolute shit viewing angles and the moment your eyes aren't completely perpendicular and centered with the screen the top and bottom start looking off
>Backlight fuse was blown when I bought it
I'm pretty average with soldering and the fuses are tiny so fixing was hell, but buying it for next to nothing because of it was well worth it.

If you need any real performance out of it, it's very well worth going a generation up. Otherwise the 16:10 screen is pretty comfy as long as you get it cheap.
>>
perhaps this is a good place to ask:
i'm looking for a (very) cheap laptop that will do good at torrenting, to reduce the power usage, and be used whenever i need to leave home for longer
prefered long battery life. doesn't need to be a rocket for games like HoMM3 or older
>>
>>59413521
Actually while I'm at it, if you get one apart make sure you don't confuse screw sizes - there's nothing to stop you from putting an incorrectly long screw too far into the keyboard or WLAN card.

>>59413530
Look at the X220, or X230 if you want better graphics performance for paying a little more. If you want cheaper or more power efficiency then I would just hunt around for whatever's cheap with an atom in it - though don't go too old because very early atoms probably won't take well to torrenting.

Does the Speaker Mute button have a LED in it on the T410? When I press it, should it turn red, just like the Microphone Mute button?

Can a T410 owner confirm if theirs lights up when they press it? I am on a Linux distribution and the Microphone Mute button lights up red when I press it, but the Speaker Mute one doesn't. I don't know if it's a Linux software issue, if my hardware is broken or if it's just not supposed to light up.

With iGPU does the VRAM of the GPU get shared with the RAM?
If so does that mean graphically intensive tasks would get affected if I run RAM intensive tasks?
>>
>>59413792
As far as I know the iGPU actually doesn't have dedicated VRAM. It uses the system RAM
>>
>>59413707
Atoms are Intel's super low power CPUs that are cheap and usually end up in netbooks and phones. Having a bit more of a look now there's plenty of cheap options with higher end low power processors anyway. Just so you know, any cpu with a model ending in U is the ultralow power models which might be better for your situation but M models aren't usually much worse for power anyway.

Just have a look at something like the X131e as an example of something very cheap that fits and is a thinkpad. The only thing I'm not entirely sure of is how well it'll handle gayming. Otherwise some of the older X series like >>59413737 suggested can be cheap though having an older CPU doesn't do you any favours for power efficiency.

>>59413737
The T410 might still be fine, other than my gripe about the graphics, which you can check, the rest is mostly random issues or me being pedantic. It's nice for the form factor and good if you can get it cheap anyway. The T520 will probably be a bit more well rounded though. Ultimately it comes down to specs, prices, and what you need out of them.
>>
>>59413874
I know that.
Will it affect performance that way?
>>

>>
>>59413792
>not just making a ramdisk in your VRAM and using as swap and setting your swappiness up high to take pressure off of the RAM so your iGPU can use it

>>59413917
Because the X220 is a little cheaper and the classic keyboard is a meme. Though mostly just because that's how it's been since the X230 was much more expensive and the OP hasn't been changed.
>>
>>59413792
If you're maxing it out, I suppose. HD3000 and 4000 allocate around 1.5GB of system RAM for their VRAM. Thinkpads of either generation can be loaded up to 16GB, so that'd have to be some really intensive program to have such a problem, probably beyond the iGPU's capabilities to handle.
>>
>>59413917
Do you care about the old keyboard?
Do you want to easily flash a modded BIOS without any extra tools?
Do you want a cheaper one?

I had a roommate in first year university who had a Dell Precision M6500. It seemed like an extremely nice machine, superbly built, great keyboard and a massive, expansive screen that put the 1440x900 panel on my T410 to shame. It was, however, total overkill for most tasks and he ended up buying a netbook halfway through the year just because this thing was such a chore to carry around.

I don't know if they are still as good as they used to be, because keep in mind the M6500 is the same vintage as xx00 Thinkpads. And we know how far the latter have tumbled since then.

hey egpu + tp dorks post what you got & how well it runs [dumb game you like]

exp gdc v8 expresscard, 750 ti, i5-2540m 8gb x220. overwatch runs a pretty solid 60 fps at medium on the internal screen (1366x768). also tried it on buds t420 (1600x900) and got 50 fps with the same gfx settings. panel can run at 50hz so it still looks fairly smooth with no screen tearing. better settings & framezzz on an external screen of course.

as for portability, an adapter & one of the smaller cards don't take much more space than a powered external hdd. just needs to be put in a project box or something to travel better & keep your loose pubes from getting caught in the fan motor

i have already replace it and flashed the EC to acommodate the new keyboard and looks and feels just right, if anyone here is registered on the thinkwiki, please edit the article about using the classic keyboard and mark the patch for X230T as "tested and working"

after all this , still have a couple of questions tho

the bios must be flashed with a external flasher, so i have ordered a CH341A and a SOIC8 clip to do that. the thing is do i have to re-patch the hacked bios with the EC keyboard patch or the Hacked bios doesnt rewrite the EC patch?

and whats with the batteries on the x230t? i have tried to use one of the batteries of my x220t and it displays a "battery is not compatible, will not charge it" at boot even when its a genuine Lelnovo battery and they only offer one model of battery for both X220t and X230t

sorry for the wall'o text

t420, w520 or x220. Holy trinity of good thinkpads.

Don't get a t440p, simply because the mouse buttons suck. Friend of mine has one. The whole touchpad clicks in almost like a key on a keyboard, registers left/right/middle depending on where it senses your touch. If you ever use middle click you will hate it. In fact if you don't use an external mouse you will hate it. Trackpoint is also unusable due to the same issue with the button.

>x220
small, light, portable, but 1366x768
ips screens available, official option no hacky shit required
no optical drive
imo the best thinkpad available today

>t420
slightly larger & heavier with an optical drive, but no ips option, I wouldn't get one unless it's cheaper than an x220 as that's a better machine.

>w520
more powerful, but heavy and bulky as a result. Wouldn't want to carry one around that much. Not worth it unless you need the extra grunt

And of course the speed of a machine depends on what model of cpu it actually has, x220 for example has i3's i5's and i7's available up to 2.8GHz. And whether it has an ssd.

Nigger please, X220 runs hotter and louder than a T420.

The only reason to get a X220 is either

1)you need the bettery life on the road

2)you absolutely cant live without a ips screen.
>>
>>59426388
Also you say you use stuff at night and like the backlit keyboard.

1. thinklight. Not a backlight, but a tiny led above the screen that shines down onto the keyboard, it works fine when it's too dark to see the keys ime.
2. lrn to touch type fgt

My company are getting computers. I might be able to get a thinkpad, finally. I'd like an X series so that commuting with it isn't such a huge pain.

What model should we settle for, though? We're obviously willing to pay more for performance, but if the X220 is the best there is...

>>
>>59426926
x200 doesn't have an ultrabay though. You have to get the dock, which then has a bay in it. If it's in the dock, then you would have an ac adapter anyway.
>>
>>59425277
well that's the curse of loonix. rid yourself of that hassle nigger. it's not worth it. install windows 7 and be happy forever.
>>
>>59426388
If you want outright CPU performance, the T440p is in a good spot because you get a 4th gen i-series socketted CPU, instead of being stuck with a slower low-power one. The downsides include shitter build quality and less customisability than everything else you listed, as well as shit touchpad. The X201 is only worthwhile if you want the 16:10 screen and it's a fair bit cheaper. Otherwise just grab whatever from factor you prefer if you're not putting the CPU or GPU under overly heavy loads.
>>
>>59426944
x220 would probably suit you fine then, linux support is great on them. If you want the best perf possible, look for one with the 2.8GHz i7, and get a good non official ssd (some of the x220's had ssd's, but they are from 2010 and are small and slow by modern standards {only 128gb}).
>>
>>59426954
x201 wasn't 16:10 was it? I thought that they were all 1366x768?

The X201 was 1280x800, and all of that generation was 16:10 as far as I'm aware. Everything newer than it is 16:9 though.

I don't understand what you mean, x220 only comes in one size. There are tablet models too, they suck and cost more don't get one.

>dock
I actually have the pic related "ThinkPad Mini Dock Plus Series 3", I'm using it with Ubuntu 16.04 on my x220 and have zero issues. All the ports work when plugged in, seamlessly connect and disconnect usb devices, power and 2 monitors while the laptop is still running.
>>
>>59426968
It was 16:10. They first introduced 16:9 with the 20 series

and yes the ultrabay is seriously underrated, a msata ssd + sata ssd + ultrabay 1TB hentaistorage is a god tier combo.

>Should I buy a X260 and retire my X201?
You're getting more power and battery life in a thinner machine. The main downsides as far as I can see will just be the screen ratio and price. Up to you if the upgrade is worth the cost I guess, it'll depend on how you use it.

I wouldn't get too caught up on the keyboard, you won't notice the few differences in key layout once you've been using it for a while, especially if you rebind things. If you're worried about it you could always try and track down a store with new thinkpads out on display though it'll probably feel alien no matter what until you've put a few hours of use into it.

2.5", and it's not a 9.5mm but 7mm. So check to make sure you are buying a slim 7mm ssd.

>>59427253
They have got better than they were right after the design changes started happening around 2011-2012. Wheather they have surpassed the pre 2011 design is debateable.

i've got a thinkpad r40e for $15 bucks at a yard sale, it has a 2ghz celeron, a gig of ram and some ati graphics, i was thinking about playing a few old games on it, will it handle gta 3, diablo 2 and other games from 90s-early 2000s or are they too much for this little guy?
>>
>>59426974
>Also, I want to use this with a dock on linux, is that going to be a hassle or will it justwerk?
It will just werk. The dock is a "dumb" device in that the ports are wired directly to your laptop's motherboard, replicating the already existing ports and adding additional ports if the laptop's hardware allows for it.
These docks are also called port replicators, which is slightly more descriptive of what they actually do. No drivers, just moving the ports.
>>
>>59427494
You're the one with the laptop anon. Just try them and see for yourself what works.

What about Thinkpad S1 Yoga? Can I install arch? Have anyone tips and tricks?

I need some advice on pricing.
This is not the suggested model and it is old, but i won't compromise for a lesser screen.
My 4:3 15" T60 was stolen from my home (Third World problems).
How much should I expect to pay for another one on eBay? And for a T60p?
Another option would be an R60, the extra thickness allows the installation of a Blu-ray drive (or other stuff I'd like to try to hack inside the extra space). How much would one of these cost?
>>
>>59427253
I won't mind buying one with UltraNav, hires screen, decent CPU and RAM for peanuts in a couple of years. Hell, I might order custom keycaps to some company to fix the keyboard layout. If I don't like the new keycaps I might go full retard and order replacements in the old style, costs be damned.
>>
Why does Thinkpad have a nipple on the keyboard?
>>
>>59428031
The T440p is already getting to a pretty reasonable pricepoint and can take a good CPU and screen. By the time you upgrade to a quad-core i7, a FHD screen, and a decent trackpad the price is a little less reasonable but not that different to what you can spend maxing out other models.

I'm kind of tempted to buy one though I don't really need it. Current prices on eBay:
>Base spec T440p - ~$220
>FHD screen - $70
>i7-4700MQ - $130
>T450 trackpad - $25
>>
>>59426959
Tell me about it. I didn't want to spend some cash on a new SSD but the micron C400 is some slow shit. Maybe some day I will upgrade that crap, but I got a desktop to upgrade as well and very little money.
>>
>>59427015
I have a mini dock 3, not that one specifically, a 4337. The X220 doesn't have compatibility issues, although USB ports are working silly and the thing wobbles so much it's not practical to type on it while it's docked.
>>
Is there any sticker I can put on my thinkpad that makes it look like a laptop that no one would want to steal?

I know many... people in my area who would steal anything unless it belonged to a police officer or someone who knew how to screw their lives up.
>>
>>59429637
What's up with your USB ports? Mine work ok with the dock. Agreed on the typing thing but really with the dock you should have external keyboard mouse and monitor. Otherwise what use does the dock have?

>>
>>59429669
Well, one of the advantages of the thinkpad is that to many people they look like ancient shit from the 90s that isn't worth any money.
>>
>>59429733
You're right about the dock, but while I don't have 2 keyboards it'd be nice to use that one.

USB ports just seem not to give enough power. When I connect an USB drive on most of them, it will just connect, disconnect, connect again, like they're flimsy.

What I would love to have is some sort of switch, similar to KVM switches, where I can plug my USB keyboard and mouse and switch between desktop and laptop so I could use the same monitor, kb and mouse. My monitor only has HDMI and DP inputs.
>>
>>59428832
It's a clit stick, not a nipple navigator.
>>
>>59429837
Are you using the 90W adapter or is it only a 65W one?

>What I would love to have is some sort of switch
These exist, I literally have one in the mail to me now from china. There are electronic & mechanical ones, I went for mechanical because it seems like it would be more reliable, don't have to deal with driver software. Press button A and the usb device (keyboard with mouse plugged into it) is connected to computer A. Button B, computer B.
Switching monitors is more difficult because os's can react badly to monitors disconnecting. But since you have two inputs, why not just plug the dock into the second input? HDMI == DP == DVI, they are all electrically equivalent so you can just use passive adapters (with DP look for two little pluses next to the logo, this means passive adapter = ok). Then just switch on your monitor? Just plug it into whichever connection on your monitor you aren't currently using.

Guys, I think I'm falling in love with the thinkpads, I don't own one though, but I'm ready to take the big step.

Just one question, would it be a good idea to build a battle station around a thinkpad, using a dock?
>>
>>59432048
You can, don't expect gaming performance though. Some of the docks support 3 external monitors.
>>
>>59432071
Yeah, I don't game, it would be nice to have a battle station in this house and at the same time the portability of a thinkpad, I think I'm gonna do it.
>>
>>59432136

>>
>>59432209

>>
>>59431987

>>
>>59432242
I did that for a while, if you get an expresscard egpu adapter it's pretty plug and play just like docking the laptop.
>>
Which of these is better for all-around use from: T570, P70, T470, T457s/p, X270?
Where can I get decent ones or even new for a good price?
>>
>>59432317
I mean the one with the best all round specs is the P70.

But you won't find those for a "good price" anywhere, and you probably won't see them discussed in this thread. Mostly focused on older models from a few years ago, before the build quality went straight to shit.

What do you need it for?
>>
>>59432472
Work/programming, games, music and movies, in that order.
>>
>>59432505
>games
don't buy a laptop.

If you really want a laptop though, why not purchase an older, cheap laptop, and a dedicated desktop? Would be way cheaper than the cost of those ones you mentioned, they cost shitloads. Like a $1000 new desktop and an old x220 or t420 for ~$300 wouldn't set you back nearly as much, and you get the best of both worlds. As long as gaming on the go isn't important to you.
>>
>>59432576
I have a pretty good desktop. I'm moving abroad to work for 3 months and can't take my pc with me. Also for games I mostly play slow games, like strategies or rpgs, so there's no need for graphics.
>>
>>59432626
Well, even modern strategy games and rpgs might struggle to run on the older thinkpad models. The general consensus is that the new ones just aren't worth the cost. The build quality isn't good, the specs aren't that good for the price, and they aren't as easily repairable/maintainable as the older models.

If you aren't running things that are too demanding, maybe a used w series like the w520? Or the t520? You can get decent prices on used models and the specs are ok (depending on the configuration, there is actually a lot of variation in specs within the same model, because of the options that Lenovo offer).
