Search results bring up reddit.

Some chinese modders made a custom motherboard that fits an X60/X61 chassis. So you can get the user-repairability of an old thinkpad while still running a modern cpu.

This is a mod consisting of retrofiting a modern mobo and screen into an older thinkpad frame.
There is a similar mod for a X200/X201 as well.
It originate from the forums of 51nb.com
There was a first batch over a year ago and it took forever for shipment, some peoples on the german thinkpad forum made a review and the consensus is that it suck big times. it's an amateur work at best, the screen is 50hz, it flickers. sound is awefull, battery life, everything.
The reason why it work is that they bypass Intel's normal ME platform verification by using Engeneering Samples CPU. There is a finite and limited suply of those.
The peoples building this mod are egocentric and hard to deal with. They don't share any informations on anything.
it's cool and all but just stay away, not worth it.

Do you have a reference to how it bypasses intel ME platform verification? Wouldn't this hack work as well? - http://hackaday.com/2016/11/28/neutralizing-intels-management-engine/

I also found a hack to make it 60Hz.
Thanks for informative answer.
