Blame the phone carriers, not Android, for that. The latest Android version is available either through manually compiling AOSP or downloading a pre-compiled ROM (there's also several custom ones). If phone carriers weren't such greedy Jews then everyone could have the update but of course they'd rather have people buy a new phone to get a new Android version rather than release it to them through an OTA update.

It's simple.

iPhone is high-end. Even old ones cost a lot. It runs iOS exclusively.

Everything else is Android. Anyone can use it. This means that you'll have budget smartphones running Android. This is also why the Android version chart is so divided. On top of carriers and manufacturers not wanting to release updates or taking too long because they need to add bloatware.

On an iOS device, you recieve updates instantly through Apple.

People just don't realize that high-end Android devices cost just as much as iPhones, but due to budget Android devices being available also, it ruins the reputation of it.

To be fair, for normies... You either get an iPhone or, if poor, you get an Android device. That's what I've seen through my experience. That might be another reason. Just how normies are. I have yet to see a normie go for an S7, for example, over an iPhone.
