Did Sony not get the memo?

I'm just sick of this trend of high end phones getting costlier and costlier. The original iPhone and the T-Mobile G1/HTC Dream launched at $399. Now this phone is almost $800 (converting from the British price gets ~$770).

There hasn't been an update to modern smart phones that would justify me paying more than 350 euros for them.
