Why aren't you using the superior Macbook? Are you that poor?

good a thread to ask this as any, my parents are buying me a mac up to worth 2300. (they are literal millionaires while i am a broke university student, they are buying me a mac because they saw my thinkpad and reeled in disgust) keeping in mind i already own a good-enough desktop pc and a thinkpad x201, what kind of macbook would be better? the new one (space grey w/ touch bar) or the older retina one? they're both the same price pretty much but i don't know shit about macs and research has just got people saying "buy the newest one because more money = better"
