That's a passive sub primarily designed to go into cars, you'll need a separate amp to power it. If you don't want to deal with that then you want an active sub that has a built in amplifier.

As for hooking up an ipod, you'll want a 3.5mm splitter so you can have one cable going to your speakers and then another to the sub, depending on what inputs the sub has will determine what you'll need on the other end of the cable.

Subwoofer only plays low notes, you'll be missing out on everything above 100hz.
