How did the whole CRF scaling between H264 and HEVC turn out? Last I heard they were not equal, has that changed?

ei does CRF 22 for H264 = CRF 22 for HEVC?

if a router claims to have 1000base-t WAN and LAN ports, I should be able to get 1gbps of data over the wired connection, right? i have fibre broadband and I don't want to drop money on a wifi router just to throttle my wired speed. I already made that mistake once

i've tried looking up benchmarks but obviously everybody focuses on the wifi performance not the LAN performance

Alright /g/ I'm going fucking insane and no one knows what's going on, maybe someone in these threads knows.
Long story short, fell into a bsod loop and nothing works, a recovery media usb jumps into the same loop and shows me SYSTEM THREAD EXCEPTION NOT HANDLED(acpi.sys) when I access repair or usb or a black screen with error 0x00000031 and parameters with all zeros, I've tried this on over 4 usbs and redownloaded the tool and installed with rufus several times, this happens even on a completely formatted clean windows install HDD, however, both hdds that I used on the bsod pc work perfectly fine on another pc, no issues.
>"Oh well it's just hardware then"
That's what I thought, after a lot of troubleshooting, memtest, hdd checks, booting with only select hardware and other shit nothing works, everything seems perfectly healthy, great temps and fans spinning fine.
>"Then it must be the mobo anon"
Yes, but then I was able to install linux distros, ubuntu, arch, etc on these hdds with no issue what so ever, they run flawlessly.
However, anything windows that I use on this particular pc shits the bed, even if it's completely formatted and removed all partitions and what not, while linux works perfectly fine.
I'm out of ideas, I don't know what's going on and I actually do need windows on this pc, sorry if it doesn't fits the thread but I'm fucking desperate right now, it's been days.

here in aus there are two streams of higher education

VET, which gives you CERT 1, 2, 3, 4 or a diploma in X topic
HE, which is uni

ALL devs I know have a diploma AT MOST. Their skillset is WILDLY different to compsci. The devs I know (and in general) couldnt form a deep search function. Thats because theres no need for that as a dev. Its not a skill that comes up. Conversely, compsci wont learn how to stand up and use an ES6 server

The answer to your question is yes and no depending on how you want to slice it.

you require the network capabilities of the nas box to set it up initially. Once youve condfigured it, sure I guess you could disable all interfaces.

but how are you going to use it? why do you want this? what do you want it for? depending on your answers a different solution might come ot mind
>>
>>59357197
>posting from a phone

I want to use the storage ideally through some cable, while maintaining the ability to have a raid and make it as secure as possible from any exploits that synology and other crap is facing. I was thinking about having some plain USB stick (or external harddrive) for that reason, but what USB stick allows to abuse it with just non-safely removing it constantly. (do SSDs survive such abuse maybe?)
>>
>>59357255
all usbs allow you to do this and have zero issues with it. the only reason safely eject exists is so anything being written to disk finished before ejecting the drive. it has nothing to do with the health of the medium

all i can say is bad luck

mac osx screams at you for not ejecting because the os is constantly writing to the background of the usbs. windows doesnt. linux, yeah its gonna break the os, not the usb if you pull it out while its mounted
>>
>>59357356
Sadly I could not even find any tests or reviews on USB sticks besides their R/W speed, nobody lists how reliable usb sticks are, I dont care to pay over top if this doesnt corrupt on me literally a month later. What about the idea with SSD? could I get those and just use some sort of adapter and just unplug them how freely I want without them breaking?

tl;dr: how reliable are SSDs vs USB sticks when comparing corruption rate

yes, they can check the logs on the exchange server to see what time it was sent, wether it was via OMA or outlook, and if they really needed to they can check the AD server for your login, wether it was via citrix or on the LAN, then check the logs on the VPN server for the original IP you connected to the VPN with

Youd have to have done something really fucking stupid for them to do that, though.

Where do you read that? KDE neon is literally just Ubuntu LTS with the KDE Plasma desktop. They use it to test out their new Qt software.

There is nothing called "the Neon desktop environment". It's called Plasma. Neon is the system itself.

https://neon.kde.org/faq

>What is KDE neon?
>KDE neon is a rapidly updated software repository. Most users will want to use the packages built from released software which will be available soon. KDE contributors and testers can use the packages built from KDE Git. It uses the foundation of the latest Ubuntu LTS (16.04).

Try harder next time.

Not quite, it's a package archive with the latest KDE software on top of a stable base. While we have installable images, unlike full Linux distributions we're only interested in KDE software.

I have this old monitor, MAG Innovision LT716s.
The other day it just died. Nothing happened, no weather, nothing else went wrong. Just... its power went off and wouldn't come back on.
Gave it a good day to rest, tried again, nothing. Not even the indicator will light up.
Everything I google for talks about a monitor turning on for a second or 2, then turning off, but mine won't even turn on at all.
I opened it op to make sure some cable inside didn't come lose, and didn't notice anything wrong with it but outside of a plug not being plugged in I'm not really sure if there's something else I should be looking for.
It's probably just fucked, but I'd be open to more free suggestions.

Hey guys, need some advice.

I have an chinese condenser mic that was nice and cheap but has great sound quality.

It works okay with my sound card but needs phantom power to work at its best.

Are there any sound cards that provide phantom power directly through 3.5mm jack or will I need to purchase external PSU?

In addition, could anyone recommend a sub £50 sound card that will be sufficient for a prosumer application?

Possible Virus Help:.

Hey guys sometimes randomly when I'm browsing either through firefox or Chrome the browser will randomly (What I can best describe) it will try and grab the page and then move it. When it does I always get this 404 error when I let go of the click.

this happened on my old computer too, on Windows 7(Now I got windows 10) I think it did started doing this since I transferred some of my files but I had scanned everything with Kaspersky just to be sure.

Does this sound like a virus? I also got a new mouse so now I don't know what is going on. I know it might sound petty but I never had this problem till recently.

- it contains registers (buckets that holds bits)
- it contains an ALU (it's just a calculator without the numbers)
- it's got a lot of pins connected to different 'things'

----------

- it can read a bit from RAM -> register
- it can read a bit from register -> RAM
- it can use the ALU

that's it... that's all there is to it! Use this knowledge for good.

It's always back to the same two kind of errors.

Then it sounds like a hardware issue, something that ubuntu doesn't use or doesn't give a shit about. You could try installing windows 10 to see if it's any different. If you have multiple sticks of ram I'd try removing them one at a time. At that point you might be down to replacing the mobo.

P.S. validuser is in same usergroup as /home/myuser/Public dir.

Already tried sticks and did memtest up to 11 passes, nothing.
The only thing left is the motherboard and it's been running perfectly with ubuntu and memtest and other stuff, I really can't even think what could cause such a critical error on windows but stay like that on ubuntu.

That is completely counterproductive. Manufacturers don't put that shit on there for your sake, it's straight up bloat that makes them money through deals with other companies. Bestbuy actually charges you extra for them to remove that shit. And an expired av that isn't getting new definitions is worse than useless, since it's likely to interfere with any useful security software you might install

how do I make a nandroid backup or image of my phone and directly move it to my pc instead of the phone's internal memory?

I can't directly make a nandroid backup on the phone itself because it has a 3GB internal memory and 60GB sd card, but the SD card is mounted to act like internal storage so TWRP gives an error that it can't write to it. the backup is 8GB big so there's not enough space to put it on internal.

I have a marshmallow phone with root and TWRP. I found a guide from like 2012-2013 that tells me to install busybox on the phone and cygwin on my pc and then use adb. However I can't help but shake the fact that there has to be some kind of simplified tool for brainlets like me. I don't know what language you are talking about but in c++ :

You have to delete anything you allocated using new. You can actually do this in the destructor of the class.
But a modern way to do it is to use std::unique_ptr, wich will automatically call delete on the address it contains whithin it's own destructor

Allow me to rephrase. I was dicking around in GParted and I accidentally allocated my main partition as free space. How do I restore said partition instead of saving individual files. I already have a (incomplete) backup with the bulk of my por- files, but I'd rather restore the partition rather than use a shitty limited recovery software (foremost) that doesn't even show up in the universal repository from a live boot.

ZFS or RAID-5?

Those that use ZFS certainly seems to like it:
https://www.reddit.com/r/storage/comments/3jcg2r/zfs_vs_raid6/cuogxhv/

But not everyone is convinced:
http://louwrentius.com/the-hidden-cost-of-using-zfs-for-your-home-nas.html
http://louwrentius.com/why-i-do-not-use-zfs-as-a-file-system-for-my-nas.html

Is this HBA thing they're talking about needed? I'm just going to run a headless server and mount it through sshfs every now and then to stream shit. Also, the current build I'm doing only has 8GB of RAM, will that be a problem if I go for ZFS?

I'll be having 4x3TB drives btw.

Whatever has the most warranty / is the shortest.

The 1000 series is very efficient, and the shortest will be just as quiet. To me, the other "musthave" feature was the ON/OFF feature, so I bought a Gigabyte one.

It was one of the shortest ones, has 3 years warranty, and has on/off. Awesome.

I used. Back when in uni and school.
You can put everything you need with your settings and shit, and just boot it.

Like bringing your PC..without your PC.
Today you can buy SSD based pendrives, so even speed is solved.

Back then I used some very minimal Debian install because pendrives SUCKED when reading small files.

All anime looks like shit on my raspberry pi 3 running LibreElec v8 and KODI 17.0. There's artifacts, screen tears, and skips when none are present when running in MPC-HC or MPV on my laptop.

Liveaction TV looks fine, shows like the sopranos or shameless. Source doesn't seem to matter either, encodes of dvdrips or BD remuxes, both get artifacted to shit if it's anime but never happens with live action movie or TV.

Is there some fundamental difference in the way anime encoders and tv encoders encode that would cause this? I've compared several videos with the same video codecs, but the only commonality I can see is that this problem is specific to anime. I don't know enough about encoding to be able to tell much more than the codec used though. Can anyone think of why this is happening?

Hello /g/
I have some really old speakers. Pic related lansing 2100
I really liked them (bass were awesome, sound was good whatever the kind of music) but they are dying now.

Any of you know some :
>awesome speakers
>good speakers
>do the job speakers

I want to see how much I should put and try them eventually. If you have any advice on how to pick good speakers I would appreciate.

All I want is something good to listen music at home. I listen to almost everything (classical, rap, electro, jazz...)
>>
>>59363604
Well, the shitpi can only decode a handful of codecs and whatnot. Weebs usually use obscure encoding that can be accelerated with DXVA usually.

tl;dr:
- Use PLEX, let it re-convert. Will take a week or more.
- Download to main PC, re-convert, move.
- Fuck the memepi.
>>
>>59363660
Go to /mu/.
No bullying but only they can help, and they will say drop a light 5000$ on an entry level system..

I would simply look for 2.1 sets and buy one.

Anything passive, like bookshelf speakers, with woofers and tweeters
+
DTA-1 or Lepai amp. Have the blue LEDs covered or pointed away from you because prolonged exposure can be damaging. They'll bleach colored paper over a few months. You'll need to get a better power supply for the Lepai or it will buzz and possibly burn down your home. You can add a self powered subwoofer later if you want.

If you want surround, you'll need a receiver instead of just an amp, and more speakers to go with it.
>>
>>59363695
It really depends. As I said most animu teams will encode in very obscure codecs, so even if you buy a new hardware, they might just change the codec, or make it 256-bit, or whatever, you know how it is.

I would use the PLEX + re-encode method.
There is now also PLEX Cloud.
You put shit into a Cloud provider, and it will play it from there.
>>
>>59363660
The worst part about speakers is that brick and mortar stores only really carry shitty soundbars or meme speakers, so you can't really demo.

Really, you're just gonna have to bite the bullet and trust online reviews before buying and hoping you didn't fuck up. But the basics of shopping for them are:

>don't fuck with active speakers or "desktop" speakers. You should be looking for passive bookshelf speakers.
>consider the space you have available. You may have to be willing to rearrange furniture to get the perfect soundstage generally leave ~6" between the wall and the speaker on any side but especially the back or wherever it moves air from
>you'll need an amp or receiver as well. At entry level, 99% of your needs will be met and the only real differences are aesthetic and pricing

Maybe. I notice a difference with my $20 Xonar compared to my jigabutt's onboard audio. It has more "oomph" and the driver software has good normalization that makes headphones safer and high dynamic range stuff audible with speakers at night.

Everybody says it's not safe to dban in raid. Even when you boot dban itself, there is a disclaimer saying that dbanning in raid isn't supported. However, I can't dban my SAS drives unless they are in raid (long story) so I need to know if dbanning in raid 1 is okay. I can see why raid 5 or 6 might not work correctly, but my understanding of raid 1 is that it just mirrors identical data to both drives which means dban should work fine. Yet dban and the internet still say if you dban a raid array, your data isn't fully wiped. What am I missing?
