brown pill me on freeBSD /g/

Is it better than say ubuntu? Does it has much driver support? My main concern is it wont support my graphics HW (inte integrated hd graphics) and it will have poor video performance.

BSD for anything other than server use is fucking pants on head retarded.
>>
>>59343378
FreeBSD got pwned by the CIA. Avoid.
>>
>>59343378
I'm interested in trying a BSD too. Just out of curiosity. I'm thinking about trying a live USB if such a thing exists.
>>
>>59343451

how so?

>>59343378
I also am looking to experiment with BSD. I tried trueOS and got throught the install but it will not boot so I'm looking to try another version.

Can anyone recommend which I can try to familiarize myself with BSD? This probably wont be a permanent install, just a test drive to learn the differnces it has with linux.

I'm leaning towards GhostBSD

Just use FreeBSD.

Let's be honest.
No OS is safe from a nation-state that has a vast amount of resources like the US. If they really want to, they can get you no matter what you do or what you run.
>>
>>59343638
Except for OpenBSD.
>>
>>59343618
Someone who is incapable of learning how to use Unix as a desktop has brain damage.
>>
>>59343683
Why would I use a BSD OS for my desktop? It makes no sense.

Because you actually need to get computing done. You need to do math, to do programming, to administer systems.
You need to do something nontrivial with a computer.
Software developers don't treat non-Unix systems as important. Everything is developed for Unix and then ported.
C
Lisp
Any server program
Most math libraries

It has very low space for an install like 1.6 GB.
If you got a large desktop that might not matter to you but some people do think about that sort of thing, I have one pc notorious for bad electricity consumption due to having one of the very first duo core mobile processors and wanted something lightweight where light weight unix distros like puppy came with a lot of extra pre-installed desktop environment stuff I didn't need.
On the plus side of figuring out how much space the distro used now I'm not going to forget that df switch or how to shut down vmstat.
>>
I'm running NetBSD in a VM right now, it's pretty neat
If I can get it set up to do all the things I do in my lubuntu install, and it works with my hardware (basically a given since it's a 5 year old laptop), I'll switch for real
>>
>>59343858
All the BSDs are fun. Sadly, I will say that NetBSD and DragonFlyBSD are less well-known, which can affect development and documentation.
But the documentation for NetBSD is good. Try out vi instead of vim, and sh instead of bash!

Except that Heartbleed proves that there's no such thing as security just because you have regular audits and more eyes on the problem.
>>
>>59343689
I've been doing it since 2001, it's fine.
>>
>>59346206
OpenSSL was/is a joke. LibreSSL, now from the same guys who made the fine piece of an operating system that is OpenBSD. I want to see a Heartbleed in that.

OpenBSD isn't only about audits. The code is simple, elegant, maintainable. It's much easier to guarantee security when the code isn't a complete, bloated and massive mess that would be impossible to properly audit regardless of how many eyes you have (and that's basically every operating system at this point).
