My first website and only website project that made it to daylight includes a modx backend and I have a streaming video player that I stream to for movies for friends and it has a chatango chat on the side because it's easy to style and supports hrml5 which makes it easy and clean. I also run other projects on sub directories of the main website like a virtual whiteboard for our game dev ideas and equations.
I also run a forum testing directory to where I test every forum for the fun of it for performance and to make it the way I want it. I'll usually fill 404 with meme flash videos. The current video is a scene from jontron of "can't a guy get some privacy? My mmhhmmmmm"

Best way to do it is to prototype it straight with HTML and CSS as it's all that is really needed.

It took me a year of work to find the perfect amount of screen space to allocate to the video and the chat. It's really not an easy task and it will scream at your brain until it's perfect. But if you want to stream movies use ustream and embed the video player (you can customize the player) and embed chatango which is all easy. But to style it is what's hard and I also made a "ticker" that would tell what current movie was playing. I created, or my friend created, a database to hold temporary information and he made a simple UI with a login to change the movie name and when you'd click accept it would change the the ticker in realtime so clients didn't have to refresh the page for the updated information.
