Why are SSDs still so fucking expensive?
After turning all my fans off at low temps, I realised it's the HDDs that are making the most noise.
Why can't we have affordable 10TB SSDs?
>>
>>59331337
Just raid 10 1TB SSDs.
>>
>>59331337
because only autists like you need 10TB SSDs
>>
>>59331337
>10TB
What the fuck
>>
>REEEEEEEEE BACKGROUND NOISE

It's a fucking computer, not a stealthy ninja assassin looking to break into the pentagon, you stupid autist.

Who the fuck cares?
>>
>>59331337
Because of supply shortages.

A couple of reasons. 1 player in the market went broke, another had a fire that decimated production and finally, yields of smaller lithography chips have been lower than expected.

They're starting to get there, but it takes time. We'll see 10tb disks in time, it's just going to take time to get there, just like it was with HDDs.

>1080p/4k videos of family events
>Hundreds of GB of .NEF photos, and then processed JPEGs
>Some movies and TV series (one 1080p BluRay film takes about 30-40GB)
>Few TB of music
it all quickly adds up, and then you also need to make few backups of all of it.
>>
>>59331501
>40GB 1080p video
You're a fucking idiot.
>>
120GB SSDs used to be 35-40 euro, they're at least 50 now, my 250GB 850 Evo cost me 80 euros, it's 100 now
What the fuck happened in 6 months?

>Get mad at Autists

The fact you can't tell the difference shows your on the verge of turning your anti-social disorder into an on-the-spectrum form of autism. Get a clue.

On top of that, IMFT haven't landed their new flash stepping and Toshiba have had huge issues getting their latest designs to work.

tl;dr - Demand is out stripping supply. Prices have gone up.

Get a spinning disk dude.

Put it a computer in the closet. Don't need 10tb of SSD to store HD videos....

HDDs are obsolete. If it wasn't for the price, no one would bother with that 70s shit any more.
>>
>>59333049
HDDs are still the gold standard for storing large amounts of data so no, they are not obsolete
>>
>>59333069
Only because they are cheap

>Why are SSDs still so fucking expensive?
HDDs only dropped under a dollar per gig over a decade ago. SSDs are dropping; a 60gb in 2009 cost me 200. I picked up half a tb for the same price last week.
>>
>>59333118
SSD prices drop stopped about 2 years ago, and went up in recent months.
>>
>>59331402
I've filled a 3tb with partial siterips from hegre, met-art in addition to some stuff ive collected over the past two years. I've nearly filled an additional terabyte while saving up for a couple of 4tb drives.
>>
>>59333133
And? HDDs shot the fuck up in 2010 after the tsunamis in Taiwan wiped out the precious metals they had farmed. Shit goes up and down in response to the world.
>>
>>59333202

I'm still stuck with 128gb on both my PC and my thinkpad. By the way:

Let's say that I have a thinkpad that I want to put some storage focused drive on, with a SATA SSD. I have an mSATA slot, but it works at SATA II speeds. I don't want my main drive (that is, the one I use for the OS and applications) to be any slower.

So what would be the best setup:

-Carry around an external USB drive, perhaps not SSD at all, knowing that I don't have USB 3.0
-Install a big nig SSD on that mSATA port, even if it's slower
-Replace current SSD with a bigger SATA SSD, working with just a single drive

>>59333266

And not accepting orders.. created more demand..
>>
>>59333315

Samsung reduced the output of their VNAND memory prod last year, don't have a source but it was announced
>>
Supposedly its due to nand shortage. But I suspect the real reason could very well be anti-trust issues. Collusion between SSD manufacturers and NAND to keep the price high artificially. Maybe even with HDD manufacturers as well, so they get time to transition slowly (spend less money).
>>
I got a 120 gb EVO 850 for around 60 eurobucks a year ago and recently bought a 250 gb one for 95

No tape storage is the gold standard for large amounts of data.

>>59333049
Just because its old doesn't mean its not still relevant
>>
>>59331501
Time to get a dedicated server
>>
>>59334242
I already have one, but I only use it for backups. I wouldn't mind using it as my main storage, but then I lose Recycle Bin feature.
>>
>>59333042

Could only work if the vendor is amazon itself.
>>
Put your hard drives in a NAS somewhere else and you won't have to worry about the noise. You shouldn't need more than a 1 TB SSD for OS, programs, and games.
