3question
This android update from the other day, it completely wiped my autocorrect and suggested words dictionary. Can I get that back at all?
Is there any way to revert the ui to what it was before?
When my phone has an update, it gives me the option to do it overnight or at a specific time (in which I always choose a time when I am asleep). Neither of them do anything though. It updates a little bit after I turn it on, which has the potential to mess things up (I was in the middle of a phone call when it happened once). Do I have to leave my phone on for it to update at night? I hate leaving it on.

Currently the point of sale systems are not on a network and the data is burned onto a disk then taken to the home office, i would like to back it up to a server instead

>>
>>59329429
Most of this shit is proprietary and unique to the model/brand you use. Really doubt you can get back lost data that way. Your options for reverting the UI are to find a launcher that looks more like what you want, or to revert your OS, which is not possible on all phones and not worth the effort to most people. It's strange that you're getting updates that often. I'd turn off autocheck and just run it manually every once in a while
>>
>>59329583

no it's just a very old setup running an old piece of software before network backups were a thing

how do I automatically in real time have the sales recorded on the server at the same time as the sale? we have had a few terminals fail mid day and lost the sales data up to that point

Why do modern external hard drives use the annoying micro usb 3.0 when the standard micro usb 2.0 cable has a max transfer rate far above the speed that the drive operates at?

>>
>>59329679
>>59329701
oh and 3.0 also feeds more power, which can be a limiting factor depending on the drive.
>>
>>59329679

if you are using an SSD external drive you can write faster with 3.0 than 2.0

for HDDs the benefit is that USB 3.0 can carry more power so you don't have to plug in ports to get enough voltage for the drive if it needs it

>>
>>59329715
So they're not nintendo. They're good at offering bang for your buck, and ending up in a lot of different kinds of hardware. Intel is actually in a pretty rough spot because their whole shtick is high end PCs, and that's a dying market. Plus they've wasted billions trying to get into mobile. Ryzen was never going to be an "Intel killer", it's just about catching up enough to make an economical alternative and push new CPU architectures that will impact the way things are designed in the future

There is conflicting information between
https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Quick_Installation_Checklist#UEFI.2FGPT_2
and
https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Handbook:AMD64/Installation/Disks#Default:_Using_parted_to_partition_the_disk

In the latter it advises creating a very tiny bios boot partition so that grub can throw some junk in there if it needs to. But in the former it omits this partition, at least in the uefi+gpt section. I get that I need an efi system partition, but both these guides recommend different sizes. Also I'm not sure what the "real" boot partition would be since it says to mark the efi partition as boot so that parted automatically adds an efi flag.

I don't know anything about hardware. So, a year ago I decided to build a second PC so I'd have something to play vidya on. It's been going well but I've noticed a problem with games installed on my HDD.

When the game has to load an asset, the game will freeze until it's presumable loaded. I like the original Counter-Strike and whenever somebody uses a voice line ('need backup', 'sector clear', etc.) for the first time since I launched it, the game freezes up for a second. This isn't a problem when the game is on my SSD.

I also used to have a weird problem where writing to the HDD caused my entire system to slow down, but reinstalling Windows fixed it. I had checked the S.M.A.R.T. data before but never thought to do a benchmark. I just did one and it looks really bad, even for an HDD, right?

How do I go about diagnosing this problem?

>>59329824
changing your ram speed is a waste of time, so just buy whats cheapest unless you want your computer to look pretty.

Performance differences across different speeds is very low as ram is unlikely to bottleneck your system at all.

If you're going all out and want an extra 1~5 fps then get more expensive faster ram with better timing, but generally the difference is minimal unless you're comparing bottom of the barrel ram to top shelf ram.

no way, the opposite is true, they are under much greater stress and will have shorter rated service lives from the manufacturer

don't compare the highest end 15k drive to the shittiest 7200 drive though

Tough question to answer. Obviously in concept a big malloc is better until it becomes too big and the OS needs to start having to shuffle things around to fit the contiguous memory. But if you're splitting up the malloc you might just be causing a whole lot more shuffling around because the program doesn't know ahead of time how much total space you're going to be allocating.

Without having knowledge about the particulars of how heaps are allocated at a low level in current OS's, I'd probably just do a big malloc and trust that malloc knows better than me about allocating memory.

Hey /g/

I want to know why different USB cables charge at different currents. I'm aware of cable size etc, but the cable is dumb. How does the charger and device being charged decide on a current draw?

Cable A charges around 500ma
Cable B charges around 1500ma and can handle full QC2.0 if given the right device.

How does the charger and device know cable A is a piece of shit?

Also when I ran my phone beyond flat and drained the battery so much accidentally it physically disconnected as the safety kicked in.. cable A had a current draw of 4 amps at 4 volts (eventually it heated up enough in the phone that the battery reconnected got some charge in it then returned to its usual 500ma/5v rate).

That's a pretty janky collection you've got there. Crystaldisk would probably give you more info, but I'd say it's pretty safe to chuck the drive. You're in a high risk situation even if you do get it to hold data for a while

Okay but what about when it was drawing 16 watts when the battery was dead dead ? The cable got warn and charging area of the phone heated up until battery reconnected itself from the thermal expansion
>>
>>59330765
That means that some tracked value exceeds the threshold meaning that the hard drive is probably dying. I'm not familiar with that program, but if you click the drive it should show you which threshold(s) surpass the fail mark.

The phone's offline charging system probably isn't smart enough to back down from the cable's max capacity a bit, or they made a decision to push it a bit so people could turn their phone back on as quickly as possible

According to Seagate Data:

Cheetah 10K.7 SAS
Annual Failure Rate = 0.62%
MTBF = 1.6M hrs

Cheetah 15K.7 SAS
Annual Failure Rate = 0.55%
MTBF = 1.6M hrs

So 15K drives in this case only fail at around 89% of their 10K counterparts, or 89 15K failed drives to every 100 10K. But that's over a massive time span and only going by Seagate's numbers. It's probably about even.

oh yeah but the numbers don't really tell me anything.

I'm currently running Windows 7's scandisk thing on it just to see how bad it is, so far it has given me several warnings of hard drive failure.

I haven't particularly lost any data, and this thing has been with me for about 6 years, but there is still a distinct sense of loss.

where do dead hard disks go? is there a hard disk heaven?

jesus christ replace the drive or at least have a backup (you should always have backups of all your important data)

I'm okay, I didn't lose anything important and I have several other drives.
I just don't like being starved for disk space. 1 TB is a good amount.
>>
>>59330832
Not catastrophic, but I don't like the way that it's hitting ALL of the bad-sector cautions. It's probably just 4 years of wear, but if you keep your OS on that drive you might start experiencing the most bizarre and frustrating errors imaginable.
>>
>>59330821

Crystaldisk doesn't translate the raw value hexidecimal for you, but you've got a couple hundred relocated sectors, and 7 uncorrectable ones, which is extra bad. It's like >>59330793

how to set up VPN without buying software, and proxy without buying domain name, using ChromeOS?

>>
>>59331901
Just flash DDWRT or tomatoUSB to a router, then run an openvpn server off of it. You need to sign up for a free DNS updater and usually install the updater app on one of your PCs to catch when your IP changes, but you may be able to find a way to put that on the router too.
>>
>>59332236

thank you!! I'll start looking into that today, not sure what I'll find on chromeOS for a DNS updater, but I know apps exist that are like easy-config VPN clients so I should be able to find something.

I also have both windows and mac, or could run linux, so if i say set up a server using windows can I still use the chromeOS to somehow update each time it changes IP? I'm imagining windows or mac running the DNS updater and using like OpenDNS to update the chrome, or would it make more sense to route all traffic through a different PC that has the updater installed like a hotspot?

I found someone talking about installing the updater on the router as well, but it seems like it doesn't work out on chromeOS too well and none of the computers on the network will be roaming devices anyway

I'm super nufag at this so thanks for the help senpai

>>59332443
So the idea of the updater is to pair your current IP to a domain name. So if anybody in the world types annonsusername.examplehost.com into their browser, it will point to your home network. So your client configs, that you'll put on any device you want to connect in the outside world, will use that domain, which thanks to they updater will always match your IP. From there they'll go through ports you've opened and connect with your flashed router. At that point they're effectively the same as any other device on your home network.

If the value shoots way up after doing 1 spinrite cycle its fucked, if it stays the same and slowly changes over time it is fine.

Had an msi p67a-g43 lga1155 motherboard with an i5 2500 in it. About to get all my ryzen parts but I wanted to upgrade my current system with my new r9 fury. My bios was from like 20111 and didn't recognize the card at ALL. SO, like any good goyim, I looked up the instructions on how to flash the bios. MSI has ""detailed"" instructions written in engrish, but were easy enough to follow.
ONLY PROBLEM IS that I flashed with a bios that updated my intel ME firmware from 7 to 8 (I did look into this and it wasn't supposed to break the motherboard, even if you weren't using an ivy bridge chip.) and did it from the utility they said to use from a thumb drive. The flash must've fucked up at some point because when I came back to the system it was in a boot loop, no post, and no beep codes. I tried clearing the cmos 3 different ways including the battery method. Now my old motherboard is bricked to shit, basically, and this looks like it was a pretty common problem on p67 boards. MSI however, doesn't have a dual bios function built in so if you're fucked you're fucked.

It's too late I've already gotten rid of the thing. but was there any way to fix this besides replacing the bios chip? It was soldered on there and I don't have the time or patience to be fucking around with that.

Also, where to buy a replacement 1155 motherboard? All the old parts still fucking work.

All you need to know to back out.

Seriously though, if I was you I'd just put UBCD on a zip disquette and run systester, memtest and maybe some HDD diagnostic.

How do I remove write protection on my micro sd card? I want to put a distro on it but I keep getting the write protection error.

I've already tried the registry thing and the disk part thing in windows. Would using gparted work? I would use another sd card but this is the last one I have.

create a regex expression from the alphabet {a,b} that will exclude all string containing 'aaa'
>>
>>59335922

the write protection part is in the reader, not on the card.
the reader checks if the little switch is flipped and then denies writing to it.

sounds like your reader is fucked.

I bought a Windows 10 laptop off graigslist, an i3-2330M. It has Intel HD 3000 graphics, AKA Sandy Bridge, which isn't supported by W10.

Would my games run faster if I downgraded to 8.1/7, where the drivers are updated? I'm getting 20FPS in Diablo 3.

I think it's still the card itself. I've tried on two laptops (w7 and w10).

I wasn't able to format it until I tried using a spare phone. After that I was given back an empty sd card but on the w7 computer it doesn't even appear at all (other cards appear) but the w10 one does see it yet cannot write to it. I'm starting to think this 32gb card is fucked and I'll just have to cough up another 15 bucks.

I have a really shitty laptop that over heats like amd, is it possible to tell if its a faulty cpu or the cooler, and is it possible to put a desktop cooler on it (obviouly taken apart)? I wanna use it for server.

Acer does sometimes deliver a very good product, but you can never tell. That's the real problem, you never know if you're gonna end up with something that has some major flaw that makes it crap itself. And when you buy second hand you don't get a warranty. I used to work at a computer repair shop for a while, and you wouldn't believe how many devices were Acer, and how many Acer devices were simply fucked(ie. customers would rather just pay for a new one than get it fixed) as opposed to being repairable.

Their high end stuff does tend to have actual standards though - and the price you're getting is not bad. I'd still test it though, if possible.

I NEED to use windows for some things and I imagine I will in the future as well.
I've avoided it until now but I have to start duobooting.
I'm working from a meager thinkpad that has 2g of ram, what version of windows will rape me the least.
I'm not going to use anything older than 7 and I'd prefer you be specific about what edition I should use (enterprise, ultimate, and so on)

so im having a bit of an issue.

ive got an old laptop. MSI GX600. im trying to refurbish it so that i can give it to a family member. the hardware is all good (as far as i can tell) but it refuses to accept an operating system.

ive tried win 7, win 10, linux mint, and ubuntu. win 7 just refuses to install period. but 10 and the linux distros will go through and fully install on the hard drive successfully with no errors. when i try to boot from the drive that the operating system was just installed on it reads that nothing is there and just goes straight to the bios boot menu or any other bootable option that it can find that is enabled in the bios.

what in the actual fuck am i doing wrong? ive tried every combination of partitions and and formats and operating systems that i can think of and i still get the same result.

please help.
