It matters that you have thermal paste and that you don't put it on wrong (pretty much just don't put too much on), but the brand and getting it on perfect don't matter.

when i removed the old stuff it wasnt crusty or breaking apart
but somehow just replacing it managed to drop my cpu's heat down by 20-30 C
there was no dust or anything blocking the exhaust
laptop is in the same spot on my desk as before

Probably shit/ overapplication from the factory.
Thermal paste is just supposed to be a tiny bit to fill the micro-gaps, and is nowhere near as good a conductor as metal-to-metal, but often when you remove a factory install it's smothered on.
