I used to be. But then I took multiple ABX tests and found out I LITERALLY couldn't tell the difference between 192 vbr Opus vs 32-bit FLAC both ripped directly from CDs. In fact I could barely tell 128 vbr Opus vs 32-bit FLAC again both ripped directly from CDs.

I kinda feel sorry for the fucking retards that spend $1000 on DACs and $10000000 on headphones.

HD650 + schiit stack is literally end game for 99.99% of the population

anything more is just for pseudoaudiophiles and tryhards

nicer 2k+ headphones are nice, don't get me wrong, and so are nice expensive amps, but they are not even close to being worth the price they are sold for

get as close as you can to the point of diminishing returns and call it a day

This isn't entirely true, there's a noticable difference between for example Apple Earbuds and a pair of Shure SE215s.

Should I buy a pair of ELAC Uni-Fi UF5s or Klipsch RP-280Fs?

The room I'm going to put them in isn't really big at all, so I'm worried about the horn tweeters on the 280Fs making my ears bleed.

Since it's a smaller room, I was thinking of getting something like a 10" 300 watt subwoofer, but I have no idea how powerful 300 watts is compared to say a 150 or 200 watt sub.

It's a shame that the term "audiophile" has taken on the connotation of spending tons of money on placebo products.

I love music and audio gear but I at least have a basic understanding of what does and does not have a significant impact on sound quality.

I only spent a couple hundred bucks for my speakers, and I'm still using an un-restored Marantz receiver from 1978 that I got for free from my uncle. Sounds good to me.

Good engineering is still going to sound like good engineering regardless of age. Nakamichi Dragon tape decks still go for $2k used because of how amazing they are at playing a shitty format like cassettes.

OTOH, modern day hifi in general is kind of dead with AV being a goodnuff thing for most users.
>>
>>59323312

Yes. FF125WK

Got the cabinets from some company called Audioprodukt in Moldova. They gave me the wrong dimensions on them and they were really specced for the older FF125K drivers, but I made them work pretty well by just shoving in longer ports to tune them lower.

Seems to be a European thing and I'm in the US.

I don't really care about extreme precision. My main issue with most clocks is that displays are too bright at night, although the problem with LED displays is that if they're extremely dim at night, they're not readable at all in a lit environment.

The old Digimatic has the least polluting night light system ever with its gentle blacklight glow. And of course it's perfectly visible in bright light as well because the numbers reflect normal light also.
>>
>>59348633
Is the brightness a problem if the display is red?
>>
>>59348964
Not sure. Red is probably the best option. Worst case scenario I can put some sort of film on it to dim it a bit, I guess.

I work for a audiophile company. We make high end amplifiers and preamplifiers, we have a listening room with a pair of Magico Q7 MII speakers and a ton of vinyl records.

Our turntable is a Clearaudio Concept worth around 2k.

It's fucking awesome, we also use Vovox cables.

No.
Marantz PM94 with B&W 603S3's and 602S3's and AKG 7xx cans.
I don't use monster cables, I don't use spikes or sound treat my walls. I draw a line somewhere, so I'm happy with the above and SA stereo tool plugins and have borrowed my mates REW setup a couple times.

That said, I do have a filthy great Cerwin vega stroker 18D as a subwoofer, often listen to youtube for music and frankly don't care if the bitrate is padded so long as I can't hear artifacting. Ignorance is bliss.

I'm not at all deluded enough to believe I can tell what music is "supposed" to sound like. Every set of speakers I own sounds noticeably different if I'm paying close attention, but I couldn't tell you which ones I even prefer, let alone which are most accurate. So long as it doesn't sound like complete shit I'm happy.

I am, however, autistically obsessed with vintage audio stuff. I just like the way it looks and feels and works. Pic related has really chunky switches and super clickly detents on the volume knob. The volume knob itself is such a thick piece of machined aluminium it makes a loud ding noise when flicked.
It doesn't make the music super special, it's just neat to use and look at. Plus if you know how to fix them you can get them super cheap. This one had all kinds of balancing and fading issues so it was only $30. A little contact cleaner later and it's good as new.

> fucking cables
Here's my figure, upgrading from $5 ching dong RCA cables to $20 - $50 (insert brand here) connectors will in most cases make a difference, and at that price, is worth it.
That said, making an effort to not run signal and speakers wires parallel to AC power will make as much or more difference.
I'm sure, using measuring equipment, there would be some difference between mid level and the over the top stuff in the 4 and 5 digit price range, but I would like to see a blindfolded comparison to see if there's a tangible difference..
>>
>>59360914
No my son. if your cables are not broken/very oxidized, no.
>>
>>59323466
HD 800S + chord mojo. The soundstage cannot be reproduced by any other headphone. Thus, the $1000+ headphones have their legitimate merits. Also electrostatics are at least 3k for the ones undoubtedly better than dynamic drivers. I've only heard the HiFi Man HE-6's as far as planar drivers go, but in those the texture is noticeably different compared to dynamics. I personally have the setup I mentioned initially and I have never heard anything close in terms of soundstage and defined spaces for each individual track. For 2k+, of course
>>
>>59323312
>waste all that money on "audiophile" equipment

>>
>>59360986
That's the point, cheap connectors fatigue, oxidize and fail. Moving up just one step from the cheapest on the shelf will pretty much guarantee that you can install it and never worry about it.
Moving up one step also means you'll be getting shielded wire.

I wasnt paying attention too hard for giveaways but what sounded better and really.. they were mostly identical or very hard to distinguish that you'd forget which was which. Maybe its all my mind playing games on me. Anyway in the end I don't think I could reliably tell unless you had some consistent tell tale sign

This is all very embarrassing as I have at least a grand in audio related purchases. But the thing is speakers and high end audio really do provide a pleasurable experience regardless of file format quality etc.

ATH M50's here.
After 2 listens I started to heard a difference.
128 seems to be compressing some of the air in her voice, and the ride cymbal driving the beat starts to sound blurred on the 128. Usually with 128 the high frequencies are the giveaway.

speak for yourself pleb, the only music I listen to is acoustic recordings of western and hindustani classical, I'll save you the effort and include the fedora as a complimentary bonus to my enlightened taste
>>
just go to the concert if you care so much about the sound quality idiots, youll spend like 200 times less money
>>
>>59366735
t. never been to a concert hall

I do go to concerts but what you don't get is that the seats with the best acoustics are the expensive ones

the $40 tickets have garbage sound quality, they're right next to a pillar in some corner where the instruments are an unbalanced clusterfuck of sound

sometimes a guest in the expensive section leaves during intermission and you can sneak down and steal their seat but my $2800 system (not including room treatment) is like 15 concerts in the acoustically ideal spot, and on top of that at home I don't have to listen to old geezers hacking up phlegm during the quiet passages or unwrapping ricola drops, which they ALWAYS, ALWAYS do, the unbreakable law of concerts being the more sublime the piece and the more amazing the conductor and the orchestra, the more HACK HACK HACK COUGH COUGH there will be

so yeah I go to concerts but I also enjoy my infinite replay that I can do at home listening to any orchestra or ensemble I could ever want, it's like having the entire concert hall to yourself
>>
>>59366922
That, and orchestras don't take requests from the audience.
