keep backup of pics from vacations/family gatherings, documents from work and other crap, get some movies/series shared on your home network to watch from any tv or computer.
If you have cameras or any home automation you can centralize it there too.

Why not run that stuff on your desktop?
>>
You basically get cloud storage, except:
- You can turn it on and off whenever you like for power saving or based on need.
- You aren't at the behest of a service because they own your shit, so you don't have to think about subscription fee changes.
- You are in control of your shit and nobody else.
- It costs less in the long term than paying for cloud.
- You can access all your pirated shit without caring about getting cucked at the border by those few countries that sell their asses to the copyright cartel.

The best thing about a home server is that it opens up so many possibilities for your choice of personal-use hardware. A desktop, a laptop, an iPad, a Nexus 6; all are one before the might of a well-implemented backend.

Backups aren't great to keep on desktops, especially if you're a distro hopper, use bleeding edge software or are some sort of autistic ricer.
Anyways, you should already be making offshore backups.

Also, for media, if you have multiple devices, you're gonna need to have both your desktop and for example your TV open at the same time, or you can just have a 24/7 server and the TV open whenever.

>>59309698
I'd do mail but I'm scared I'll mess up and get on a spam list. Also I don't want to get pwned. I've just let Zoho handle my domain.

Anyways, I've wanted to get a Murmur server up since my friends and I have unlimited data on our phones so we can just connect to my server whenever outside. It seems to be the best solution because we've got full control over it and it isn't bloated.

1. Central backup of all client computers (10 max). Does it automatically on daily basis with zero input needed from you once you tell WHS what to backup. * Client pc must be on/or in sleep mode
2. Central storage for all documents/movies/music/porn/etc.
3. Stream movies/music/pics to any device thanks to built in DNLA streaming capability (or install Servioo which is free for formats the built in one don't support)
4. Can access server from any web browser over the net to download/upload files. (the connection is encrypted so no one can spy on you). or you can setup an old school FTP server.
5. Support for GPT drives. So add Macrium Reflect (which supports GPT) and now you can grow your storage to like 16TB and safely backup it up. Can also backup the server's os/client backups in case of hdd failure.
No mater what you do, backups are the key. Add a UPS for max data protection so if power fails your server can shutdown before it loses power.

Software raid is a lot more reliable than hardware raid cards. If there's a bug in Linux software raid it gets fixed fast. If there's a bug in your hardware raid card the manufacturer won't help, they already got your money.

Hardware raid used to have speed benefits but that was back when processors were <1GHz and heavy IO caused high CPU.

Tplink sg1008d 8port gig switch(2013 model)
Or
Linksys SE2500 5 port gig switch? Relatively new.

I'm leaning on 8port cause reviews. First time home networking.

Any reason you are using whole instance just for dns adblocking/dnscrypt (pihole one)? Why just don't install dnscrypt and your favorite dns server software (unbound, bind, etc) on freebsd/linux instance that you have always on?

Btrfs is a very bad choice for raid. There have been bugs that dropped the whole storage pool.

Zfs is godly though as long as you've got the rescources.

If you want to get some good switches you should have a look at Mikrotik. They've even got some pretty cheap 1U rackmountable ones.

btrfs works flawlessly with raid 0,1,01,10.
I only use Raid 10 for unmatched speed and redundancy.

Print and scan. Why install drivers for 5 machines if I can put CUPS on a piece of shit I found in a garbage can, send all jobs through there driverless. For scanning, just enable brscand and all the files land in a network accessible samba share. I can get all my school done with just my phone and the server. Teacher assigns problemsheet, dl on phone, send to CUPS, do homework, scan with SANE, submit. EzPz lemon squeezy.

Redundant storage of important files, projects, photos
Redundant, easily accessible media library: movies, shows, muh anime
Storing everything on your main rig or non redundant HDDs is begging for data loss. It's all about security

The storage is just for backups and media.
Besides that I have a ESX cluster with 256GB ram and 36 cores with its datastores on a 2TB RAID-10 SAN.

EXS runs test environments and shit.

I still wouldn't trust it. The mere fact that a main feature of btrfs destroyed the pool on raid 5 and 6 shows that it hasn't been tested at all.

Who knows what other bugs still lurk inside btrfs. If I were in your situation and cared about the data on there I'd definately use zfs.

mass storage on redundant drives
automated backups
samba
bittorrent
nextcloud for contacts/calendar/notes
vpn

raid 5 or 6 is known to still be unstable for btrfs. raid 1 is considered stable though. needless to say you still need regular redundant backups.

I live in austin texas and am taking advantage of at&t's gigabit service. A bit more expensive than I like, but my last ISP ghosted my router for having too many connections so I just wanted to switch.

Supposedly my whole block shares the same gigabit cable, but the lowest I've ever seen it go was 400-something mbps up and down. At night its 900mbps up and down.

My only concern was getting booted, but it hasnt happened yet. I'm not sure if it's because at&t does what it can to protect the whole neighborhoods internet, or if people arent as bad as I imagined.

>keep backup of pics from vacations/family gatherings, documents from work and other crap

Ever heard of a USB stick?
>theres a fire
Your server burned with your photos on it
>theres a burglary
No burglar is lugging off a fucking server, your computer probably, doubt they would go for a USB stashed in a drawer
>I can grab the files from my server anywhere
You can carry your USB anywhere.

I could be missing something though so point it out if I am.
