Potential Linux switchers welcome. Ask questions, get answers, etc.
>>
I've been considering the switch over to BSD. I'm worried that I will have to spend a lot of time configuring, and learning new commands. Or how to use alternatives to the programs I already use.
How much of what I believe is a meme?

Everything you believe is true. Consider using PC-BSD or GhostBSD.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.
>>
Didn't they have programs to attack FreeBSD systems too?
>>

And you're welcome to switch right back when you see what shit it is.

Alright man, I'll get right to the questions.
I'm using Linux Mint as my main OS at the moment on a couple of devices. I would be comparing BSD to Linux Mint.
1. Steam? I'm guessing that steam games are out completely, or is Wine on BSD pretty good? I have a second drive with Windows for games but I prefer to not use it.
2. Nvidia drivers, what's the go? If I can't play games I guess it won't matter much but I'm assuming that I'd need to perform a manual install, like I did back in the day when I ran Fedora Core.
3. WiFi support, how much work will I need to do if I want to get drivers for a thinkpad?

What a classy logo.

No takers?
I'll settle for one person saying 'free BSD runs great on my stinkpad'.

I'm terribly sorry for interjecting another moment, but what I just told you is GNU/Linux is, in fact, just Linux, or as I've just now taken to calling it, Just Linux. Linux apparently does happen to be a whole operating system unto itself and comprises a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Most computer users who run the entire Linux system every day already realize it. Through a peculiar turn of events, I was misled into calling the system "GNU/Linux", and until now, I was unaware that it is basically the Linux system, developed by the Linux project.

There really isn't a GNU/Linux, and I really wasn't using it; it is an extraneous misrepresentation of the system that's being used. Linux is the operating system: the entire system made useful by its included corelibs, shell utilities, and other vital system components. The kernel is already an integral part of the Linux operating system, never confined useless by itself; it functions coherently within the context of the complete Linux operating system. Linux is never used in combination with GNU accessories: the whole system is basically Linux without any GNU added, or Just Linux. All the so-called "GNU/Linux" distributions are really distributions of Linux.

I tried to install FreeBSD and making Xorg/Wayland not shit itself on modern hardware is way too much effort for the minimal gain.

Cheers. I guess I'm going to give it a go on a T61 anyway.

Alright I WAS gonna setup a private email server on lubuntu to escape googlenet BUT because of vault 7 I now realize the CIA niggas can keep all my emails even if they were stored on a home server on their cloud. Is openbsd the only safe BSD from CIA? Can it run LAMP server shit? Did the CIA zero day apache too?

i don't think it's really true

1. no native steam but i believe theres wine for freebsd
2. only on freebsd because nvidia hates you
3. is it broadcom? may cause issues
if its really old and like intel or something im very sure it'll work
>>
>>59310074
My exact experience. I have to mess around with CPU rendering optimization because the driver for my Intel HD graphics card on my two year old laptop isn't finished yet.

That being said, this thing seems a lot less hacked together and absolute shit than Arch Linux. So I guess I'll have to suffer for the hackercred
